November 22, 2013 – it was really a very beautiful and sunny Autumn day in Nerima, Tokyo – I had the honorable privilege to meet Mr. Michael Yee from Mount Shesta, CA, who is a famous developer of Phonomena (I bought this back in 2004), Phonomena 2, Nova Phonomena and SuperNova / SuperNova 2 (he kindly handed over this superb product to me) and handful of power amplifiers, and his latest production, MYDAC II (he was kind enough to lend me the prototype version last year).

2013年11月22日、ここ東京都練馬区はとても美しくポカポカ陽気の一日でしたが、そんな日にカリフォルニア州マウントシャスタから来日している Michael Yee さんと会うことができました。彼は、有名なオーディオ機器開発エンジニアで、私も彼の製品を長年愛用しています。彼は Phonomena（2004年に私が購入した製品）、Phonomena 2、Nova Phonomena そして SuperNova / SuperNova 2（昨年なんと譲って下さいました）といった蒼々たるラインアップのフォノイコライザーアンプや、独自のパワーアンプ開発で知られています。彼の最新の製品は DAC で、MYDAC II として昨年末から販売されています（やはり昨年、製品化前のプロトタイプ基板を貸して下さいました）。

   

We enjoyed playing tennis for two hours at the Hikarigaoka Park under the sunny sky. We did singles match, and he completely beat me two sets to love at 6-4 and 6-0, with his flat and fast shots, hitting balls on the rise, that prevented me from getting ready to hit balls back. But anyway we had a great time hitting balls on the court.

秋晴れの下、初めてお会いしたマイケルさんと光が丘公園で2時間テニスを楽しみました。シングルスの試合をやりましたが、6-4、6-0 とコテンパンにやられてしまいました。彼のショットはフラット系でとても速く、ベースライン内であらゆるボールをライジングで捉え、こちらが対応するスキを与えないというものでした。参りました。けどとても楽しかったです。

 

We had lunch together after the tennis, and we talked about various things, including Fly Fishing, tennis, audio components and his products, Linux, Japanese cuisines in US, his first visit to Japan about twenty years ago, his family and my family, etc. We had another great time.

テニスのあと、一緒に昼食をとりながら、いろんなことを話しました。フライフィッシングのこと、テニスのこと、オーディオ全般や彼の製品のこと、Linux やデバイスドライバーのこと、アメリカでの日本食のこと、20年前にもなる彼の初来日の時のこと、お互いの家族のこと、などなど。やはりとても楽しい時間でした。

 

Michael-san kindly brought me the MYDAC II board, that I found sounded very “analogue” like magic when he lent me the prototype last year – I cannot thank him enough always.

去年 プロトタイプを試聴させてもらって、魔法のようにアナログっぽい音になることにびっくりさせられたあの DAC、MYDAC II の最新バージョンの基板。マイケルさんが今回私のために持ってきて下さいました。もう本当に、毎度毎度、いくら感謝しても感謝しきれません。

   

And now the bare circuit board of the MYDAC II is here again. It sounds very “analogue” and “organic” like a magic – even without the help of high resolution, even compressed mp3/m4a sounds very comfortable and listenable. The only drawback so far is, the USB input only accepts 16/48 – you’ll need some USB-DDC devices (like HiFace2) to get the board hi-reso ready with PCs.

一年振りに基板がうちに来ました。ハイレゾの力を借りなくても、CD音源(16/44)が魔法のようにアナログっぽく生き生きした音に変貌してしまいます。たとえ mp3 や m4a の圧縮音源であっても、充分に聴くに耐える音に変えてしまいます。唯一の欠点は、やはりいまどき USB 入力が 24/96 や 24/192 に対応していないということで、PCオーディオとしてこの基板を使うには、HiFace2 などの USB-DDC を調達しなければいけません。

 

Michael-san, you are not just a talented engineer, not just a superb fly fisherman, not just a good tennis player, but more than that you are a very kind person as a human being – just like the sound from the audio components you have developed. I bought a second-hand Phonomena in 2004, had the first e-mail contact with you in 2009 asking for replacement batteries – back then I didn’t even dream of having an encounter with you in Tokyo, 2013! Hope I will visit your country someday to see you again. Thank you.

マイケルさん、あなたは素晴らしいエンジニアであるだけでなく、師範級の腕前のフライフィッシャーなだけではなく、テニスが上手なだけではなく、人間として本当に優しく素晴らしい人であると思います（あなたの開発したオーディオ機器から出てくる音のように）。2004年に Phonomena の中古を買って、2009年にバッテリー交換の件であなたにメールをしましたが、まさかその時に、こうやって東京でお会いできることになるとは夢にも思いませんでした。きっといつか、西海岸を訪れて、あなたにまたお会いできればと思います。本当にありがとうございます。
