Solidair Audio Pylons upgrade for GyroDec

After I did DC Motor + True Point Audio PSU upgrade to my GyroDec Mk.III (although it was meant for replacing a failed AC motor), I tried another upgrade provided by third-parties, this time for GyroDec’s suspension system. The result was really stunning against my initial expectation – now I believe this upgrade is “MUST” for all the GyroDec users; one of the best among what I’ve done in the past – the best value for money indeed.

Michell’s original suspension turret upgrade

As I mentioned in my past article (Oct. 2009), GyroDec’s suspension system has two versions – initial version for Mk.I to Mk.III, improved (current) version for Mk.IV up to now. Both mechanisms are basically the same: Gyro’s sub-chassis is hung from the turrets with coil springs. However, each of the three spring turrets of the original version were solid piece, while the improved turrets (that are still used for brand new GyroDecs) are split in two vertical parts, a point-contact with a bearing ball. This somewhat contributes less resonance from the ground to the sub-chassis (thus turntable and tonearm), and more effectively, it makes fine-tuning of GyroDec’s suspension settings far easily.

Third-party upgrades to replace GyroDec suspension springs

Third-party suspension upgrades available on the market are not for improving this spring turret, but for improving/replacing spring itself.

The mechanism of sub-chassis hung with springs are benefitical in that the sub-chassis are sonically separated from the ground in some way. But on the other hand, the resonanse of the spring itself may travel to the sub-chassis (thus to the turntable platter and to the tonearm) - it is known that the sub-chassis and the spring exhibit a resonance at about 300Hz. Also, bouncing the sub-chassis at 2-3Hz requires us much strain (although it looks very GyroDec-ish) when lowering the stylus onto the record.

As far as I know, three variations of suspension upgrades are available by third-parties: Pedersens Gyro Upgrade, True Point Audio Suspension Units (aka “Pete’s Pylons”), and Solidair Audio Pylons Upgrade.

Pedersens Gyro (with some other upgrades)

The most famous one would be Pedersens Gyro, replacing the springs with rubber O-rings. But it is a part of the complete Pedersens Gyro Upgrade Kit (that requires drilling on the sub-chassis) and not sold separately.

True Point Audio (aka “Pete’s Pylons”)

Another upgrade is provided by True Point Audio (the same factory of my DC Motor PSU), providing similar rubber O-rings to replace springs, but the appearance is somewhat different from my personal preferences (I’m not talking about the sound improvement here BTW).

Solidair Audio Pylons

And the last one is the Solidair Audio Pylons suspension upgrade which I decided to buy. The braided waxed cotton strings (that replaces springs) are connected to ebony washers (that replaces the original steel/plastic washers) – the look of this pylons are very similar to those of the SME turntables (like SME Model 20/3 etc.). As I read so many fabulous reviews on several web bulletin boards, I thought I wanted to try this upgrade.

Disclaimer

I give you due warning here in advance – I am not writing “which one among these three upgrades are better”. In the first place, I don’t have all of these three upgrades at once, and I cannot compare them with my GyroDec. Rather, it would be very important that all of these three upgrade kits are trying to solve the very same weak points and issues, with the very similar approach. Anyway, based on the looks and/or convinience, I chose the Solidair Audio version.

Installing Solidair Audio Upgrade (to my GyroDec Mk.III)

GyroDec sub-chassis (with SME 3009R installed) and turntable

The initial step to install the upgrade kit, you must remove the turntable platter and the sub-chassis from the main acrylic plinth.

GyroDec Mk.III Acrylic Plinth, Motor Unit and suspension turrets

Then the acrylic plinth now holds only the motor unit and the three spring turrets (note that this is the MK.III version, motor unit sitting on the acrylic plinth, unlike the standalone motor like Gyro SE and Mk.IV / Mk.V).

Installing Solidair Audio Pylon upgrade

Uninstall the original spring units, then install the Solidair Audio suspension instead. Very easy to uninstall/install. BTW my Gyro Mk.III are already upgraded with Michell’s suspension upgrade (spring turrets are two-piece ball bearing type like Mk.IV and up).

And place the sub-chassis and the turntable platter back – mission completion. The last thing is to check if the sub-chassis and the turntable platter perfectly level. If not, turn the top of the turret while holding the upper ebony washer to fine-tune the height then make the sub-chassis and platter perfectly level.

Impression (that amazed me)

Now it’s time to check the sound.

my Michell GyroDec Mk.III (as of Dec. 30, 2020)

The initial playback instantly amazed me – this upgrade does bring my GyroDec to another level. Very clear and solid soundstage, mid-low sound representation are more beautiful than ever. This may prove that one of GyroDec’s few weakness is the resonance from the suspension springs and the sub-chassis.

GyroDec itself is a very simple construction with a very good concept – so if any of its (minor) defects are resolved, it will become better and better with superb playback. Also, various upgrade kits are available from several third-parties. Long Live GyroDec and its family!

On a final note, below is the review I wrote at the Solidair Audio web page:

Truly value for money.
My 1995 GyroDec (so-called Mk. III) had gradually equipped many upgrade parts since I bought it in 2003 – spring turret upgrade, GyroPower QC (for Papst AC motor) then DC motor, bronze knife edge for SME 3009R, and some more. They all brought enough improvement in sound. But the most recent installation of this Solidair Audio Pylons upgrade gave me another level of superb sound playback. As many other reviewers alredy mentioned, it surely brings better response and transiency, as well as tighter and more solid/defined soundstage. Many of my favourite albums are reborn with a new life. Again, truly value for money indeed. Highly recomended for all Gyro/Orbe users.
