78 rpm stereo microgroove – Hooray for Rivermont Records!

78 rpm, microgroove, and stereo recording.

It’s nothing but miraculous that such records exists (and are still released).

Here’s some additional information for those who don’t understand what I am talking about.

Regular “vinyl” records are made of PVC compounds – LP records are cut at 33 1/3 rpm, while “single (donut)” records as well as EPs (Extended Playing) and “12-inch (maxi) singles” are cut at 45 rpm. Before these vinyl records, most common format was 78 rpm 10-inch shellac records (12-inch discs stored in a binder album was also common especially for Classical music).

The biggest difference between vinyl / shallac records are materials, but another big difference is the width of the groove on records. Shellac (78 rpm) records are cut with wider groove, and it needs bigger stylus to be properly played. This is why the grooves on modern vinyl records are called “microgroove”.

So the records I mention in this article are cut at the same 78 rpm like old shellac records, while the width of the groove is “microgroove” (also in “stereo”).

Actually, 78 rpm microgroove records were released in the past (very few, and for collectors though). For example, Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys was released in double 78rpm (monaural) format on the 2011 Record Store Day (see: my past blog article).

Anther example I know is King of Love by Dave Edmunds, released in 1990 – 45rpm on A-Side, 78rpm on B-Side (see: Discogs entry)

If you look back, you find the label Turntable Records in the 1950s – they released 78 rpm microgroove records “For High Fidelity Reproduction”, as shown in the below advert (Down Beat, Mar. 24, 1954 issue). It can be said that this would be one of the early example of “audiophile pressings” but not sure.

Back to the story – such marvellous ones as “78 rpm” “microgroove” “stereo” and “10-inch” records are released by Rivermont Records and the owner Bryan Wright, who is an established professional Ragtime Jazz pianist. As you read the following interview, his love and passion for pre-War Jazz / Popular music is infinite.

Rivermont Records have released so many varieties of CDs / LPs / 78rpms, including new recordings as well as compilation releases of old recordings. The target in every release is: Jazz and Popular music of the 1920s and around – so-called “The Golden Age”.

I love pre-WWII Jazz so much as well, and listen to them very often. Presented here is a brand new recording in 2019, with a very traditional way of arrangements, and with the very warm and crisp mastering like pristine shellac 78rpms, in very modern Hi-Fi sound. This is a very precious recording, so that we the listeners can imagine how the original old Jazz recordings of 100 years ago would originally sounded like in recording studios.

The following YouTube video features the recording session by The Chicago Cellar Boys, cutting to the lacquer master, then the playback of the final 78 rpm records. You won’t be disappointed.

Great performances with good arrangements, played in great fidelity – that’s definitely my favourites. I will keep supporting future releases from Rivermont Records. I’m rooting for you, Bryan-san and Yuko-san!
