78rpm pulley for Michell DC GyroDec / Orbe

我が家で Michell Orbe SE が稼働し始めて、はや9ヶ月が経過しました。そのパフォーマンスには非常に満足しています。

It’s been already nine months since the installation of Michell Orbe SE at home. I have been totally satisfied with the performance.

一方、20年以上お世話になった弟分である Michell GyroDec を引退させられないのは、Orbe で 78回転盤がかけられないためです。

On the other hand, I cannot retire Orbe’s little brother Michell GyroDec, which has served me well for over 20 years, because Orbe cannot play 78rpm.

そこで、33⅓ / 45 / 78 回転の3スピード対応のプーリの制作を英国の工房にお願いしてみました。

So I asked a workshop in England to make a custom pulley that can do three speeds: 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm.

Solidair Audio Pylons upgrade for GyroDec

GyroDec Mk.III に施した DC モーター + True Point Audio 電源ユニットによるアップグレード （これはACモータ故障によるものでしたが）に続いて、以前から気になっていたサスペンションアップグレードを行いました。これが予想以上の効果をもたらし、過去に行った GyroDec アップグレードのなかで最もコストパフォーマンスに優れる顕著な再生音向上をもたらしてくれました。全 GyroDec ユーザにおすすめです。

After I did DC Motor + True Point Audio PSU upgrade to my GyroDec Mk.III (although it was meant for replacing a failed AC motor), I tried another upgrade provided by third-parties, this time for GyroDec’s suspension system. The result was really stunning against my initial expectation – now I believe this upgrade is “MUST” for all the GyroDec users; one of the best among what I’ve done in the past – the best value for money indeed.

GyroDec では、初代 Mk.I から2000年頃のモデル Mk.IV まで Papst AC モータ（901 3520 001）が使われていましたが、Papst 社が当該モータの製造を1999年頃に中止してしまったため、2001年以降に製造されている GyroDec では、現在入手可能な新品でも、DC モータが採用されています。

GyroDec, since its beginning Mk.I until 2000 Mk.IV, had synchronous Papst AC Motor (901 3520 001) installed. However, Papst discontinued the particular motor in 1999 (and J.A. Michell used the last batch of motors until 2000), and post-2000 GyroDec (Mk.V) adopts DC Motor instead.

国内外の各種オークションサイトなどを探しても、Papst AC モータの中古やデッドストックは滅多に見つかりません。かといって、AC モータが搭載されている中古の GyroDec を買うのも本末転倒です。なにより、レコードを聴けなくなる期間が長くなるのは辛いので、あきらめて DC モータを調達する方向で考えることにしました。

Unfortunately, few used units (or “new old stock” or “deadstock”) of the Papst AC Motor cannot be found on market all around the world. And it’s kind of absurd to look for another used GyroDec with the AC Motor installed. Furthermore, it was really painful for me that I could not enjoy spinning records – that’s why I started thinking of obtaining a brand new DC Motor.
