Sonny Clark Trio (Time S-2101)

Last month I visited a certain vinyl shop in Tokyo and found the original mono LP of “Sonny Clark Trio” (Time T-70010). The most surprising thing was its price – 300 thousand yen (approximately 2,600 USD) – oh my!

Usually, a price of a hard-to-find vintage LP is roughly set by the “supply and demand” balance. Also, the price is also usually set by a shop’s own decision. And it’s also surprising that there are some people surely to exist who buy such LPs even though it’s too expensive against “reasonable price”. Anyway I (as one of “ordinary people” who makes much of “cost-performance”) must be a perfect stranger to such an expensive vintage LP.

It was a long ago in 1990 — I was just a “second grader” as a Jazz listener — when I bought the LP of “Sonny Clark Trio”, a Japanese reissue from Century label. When I first listened to this album, I was wondering the muffled sound (especially the sound of piano). On the other hand, the performance by the trio completely knocked me out — the terrifying perfomance sounding like the pianist risking his own life; as well as the subtle nuance of ambiguities. It was my first experience to listen to such an album. If my mental situation was not completely perfect, I would not be able to listen to the album all through.

This particular reissue (Time / Century CEJC-00067) — released in 1990 — sounds much better than previous Japanese LP issues from Teichiku label — original recording itself would not probably be “Hi-Fi” (the sound of the piano captured in extremely narrow frequency range IMHO), but the reissue engineer might tried to cut the best possible sound from the recorded tape.

Bass is located on the left; piano on center; drums on the right, a typical stereophonic separation of early 1960s recording, but not so bad. I guess the recording engineer tried to record the bass by George Duvivier as good as he could, and probably as a result, recorded (or cutting) level was somewhat low.

So you may want to turn up a volume a bit, in order to appreciate the album. On the other hand, even if you play it louder, the piano by Sonny Clark sounds rather dry and bright; the sound of the drums by Max Roach lacks brilliance and spectacular nuances.

After sixteen years after I firstly listened to the “Sonny Clark Trio” album, I was lucky to find the second variation of this album in stereo (Time S-2102). Luckily enough, it costed one-fiftieth of the original monaural LP as I mentioned at the beginning of this article 🙂

It is said that, this second issue (mono: 52101; stereo: S-2101) came out probably in 1962: two years after the original issue (mono: T-70010; stereo: ST-70010; although ST-70010 was likely to be unreleased at the time) was released. The title was changed here, from “Sonny Clark Trio” to “Max Roach / Sonny Clark / George Duvivier” (does this mean that Sonny Clark was not nominally the leader anymore?)

Also, the liner-notes on the back cover mentions Sonny Clark’s death, so the correct release year would be 1963.

The particular copy I’ve got comes with mono cover (“52101” printed on the back), with the “STEREO” sticker on the front. It is known that there are several variation on the 52101/S-2101 copies (with or without deep groove on the label; label variations; etc.), but at the same time that the sound quality may be similar among such variations. So I bought this copy — without deep groove on the label — with confidence.

WOW. It sounds fascinating — far better sound than that from the Japanese reissue(s). Piano still sounds narrow, while the strong touch from the piano is more audible.

The most different is the sound of Max Roach’s drums, capturing more nuances from a body blow of tender touch, to speedy and precise rhythms, rousing Sonny Clark’s emotion. Cutting level is good enough, and the reproduced sound is very powerful, although it sounds a bit “peeky”. Anyway, it was a good find for me at a reasonable price.

Some collectors say that the original issue (T-70010) sounds exceptionally great — not in the “Hi-Fi” sense, but in the “artistic/emotional” sense — some even say that it can play “slightly shadowy, melancholy and crazy tones”. However, it is exceptionally expensive as well! As a matter of fact, it won’t sound fifty times better than my copy, although it costs fifty times more than mine 🙂 So I am satisfied with my S-2101 copy.

What’s more, if you turn on the “blend” or “mono” switch on your amplifier, the nuance of the piano sound changes interestingly (my amplifier is not equipped with such switch — so I accomplished mono mixdown in a different way). Original master tape may be three-track (or simply two-track?), and the original mono LP was highly probably cut from the same tape by mixing it down to mono. Ah, when mixed down to mono, I kind of feel a bit of “slightly shadowy, melancholy and crazy tones”, although I have never listened to the real sound of T-70010.
