Rock や Popular のプロデューサとして活躍される更に前，かつて Jazz の世界で西海岸で一世を風靡した Dave Pell さん．今となってはこの辺りのサウンドはなかなか振り返られることが少なくなってきていますが，今聴いてみると，まあそれも仕方がないという感じではあります．古き良き戦前のビッグバンドの魅力を少しモダンなアレンジでしゃきっとかつオーソドックスに演奏する，そこが肝である訳ですが，こういうのに魅力を感じる人間は確かに少なくなってきているのかも知れません．

Mister Dave Pell, who was one of the most popular jazz musicians, arrangers and producers in the west-coast area of the U.S. (he later became famous also as a rock/popular producer). Such sounds as heard on this LP has been less popular nowadays. The essence of the west-coast bigband jazz in the 1940s-1960s would be the revival of good-old swing style with a little modern arrangements and orthodox performance – so recent people may not have attention to such kind of music.

で，このアルバム．ジャケットデザインの手抜きっぷりがなんともはやですが，実はホーンやリード楽器の形が 10個ほどエンボス加工されています (正直，さっき気付きました)．ジャケットでもレーベルでも高らかに謳われている「Plays Monaural Or Stereo」という文句．これは真っ赤なウソですね．盤自体はステレオ盤ですが，これを昔のモノーラルカートリッジ (垂直方向にコンプライアンスが全くない) で再生したら，盤が痛むだけです．PRI (Precision Radiation Instruments) というレーベルは初めて見ますが，どうやら Dave Pell さん本人が所有していたレーベルの様です．

Talking about the jacket cover – such scamped work is scarce! However, I noticed just now that the front cover has embossed reed/horn instruments. And another famous story about the phrase “Plays Monaural Or Stereo” – if you actually play this stereo LP with very old monaural cartridges (without vertical compliance at all), the needle will damage the platter, completely. As for the label PRI (Precision Radiation Instruments), this is the first copy I’ve ever seen – I’ve heard the PRI label itself was a vehicle for Dave Pell himself.

内容はといえば，まるでお手本の様なアレンジ．Dorsey Brothers の楽曲とアレンジの魅力を損なわず，ほのかにモダンなフレーバーをまぶした感じで，聴き心地は悪くありません．けれども，すぐに飽きてしまいそうなのも確かです．メンバーは Ray Linn, Cappy Lewis, John Audino (tp); Joe Howard, Dick Noel, Harry Betts, Herb Harper (tb); Marty Berman, Babe Russin, Ronny Lang, Ed Rosa (sax); Nick Bonney (g); Buddy Clark, Lyle Ritz (b); Frankie Capp (ds); Dave Pell (ldr); Jimmy Priddy (arr) という感じです．Joe Howard さんが Tommy Dorsey 役を担っており，やわらかくビブラートするトロンボーンの音色もよく再現されています．

All tracks are very good examples of the revival of Dorsey Brothers’ sound. With much respect to Doresy Brothers’ tunes and arrangements, Dave Pell added modern flavours onto them. They actually sounds very comfortable. On the other hand, it is also true that most listeners may be satisfied so soon with such kinda sounds. Members include Ray Linn, Cappy Lewis, John Audino (tp); Joe Howard, Dick Noel, Harry Betts, Herb Harper (tb); Marty Berman, Babe Russin, Ronny Lang, Ed Rosa (sax); Nick Bonney (g); Buddy Clark, Lyle Ritz (b); Frankie Capp (ds); Dave Pell (ldr); Jimmy Priddy (arr). Mr. Joe Howard plays a role of Tommy Dorsey, and he actually plays nice with gentle trombone sound of vibrato.

総じて，吉池さんにはドンピシャリの アルバム ではないでしょうか（笑）

To summarize, this LP is just for Yoshiike-san 🙂
