Your choice? LP with cover, or 78rpms without cover?

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice –
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

The pros and cons of LPs and 78rpms are many – of course depending on the people’s favours. Here is a typical list (which I think) of good/bad aspects of LPs (with cover) and 78rpms (without cover) respectively.

good sides of LP with cover

  • comes with fancy jacket artwork which itself is really attractive 🙂
  • no annoying process needed, like flipping sides / changing discs for every track
  • sound quality is (in most cases) better than late reissues
  • making better use of the “album” format in the sense of totality
  • no need to buy and install another stylus for 78rpm playback in this 21st century 🙂

good sides of 78rpms with no cover

  • (in most cases) sounding far more crisp and powerful than microgroove discs
  • and because of that, can fully enjoy the greatness of music with good-sounding 78rpm, unlike we can’t with badly transfered LPs
  • three to five minutes (for each side) being the best length (for some people) while listening with much concentration
  • (in most cases) can be obtained cheaper (at the moment) than LP equivalents 🙂

Basically, such comparison is very delicate and applicable only for releases in the very short period of time, say, the very last years of 78rpms (from just after the World War II to the middle 1950s). And in the Jazz field, LPs / 78rpms of Be-Bop and early Modern Jazz would be the talk of us – when we listen to Pre-War Jazz, we tends to compare 78rpms and recent CD reissues.

Furthermore, there are several other formats available from 1949 to the middle 1950s – 78rpm album with thick binder and cover, equivalent 45rpm album with thick binder and cover, and EP album with cover. In the Classical music field, there was even more alternative – reel-to-reel tape releases. I know some people believe that these reel tapes surpasses any LP releases.

The fabulous 10-inch LP (cover drawing by David Stone Martin) by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie – according to the JATP catalogue booklets in the 1950s (I will mention this booklets later on this website), it costed 3.85 USD when it was released.

Both sides contains four tracks each: A-1 to A-3, and B-1 to B-3 are performed by the quintet – Dizzy Gillespie – Charlie Parker – Thelonious Monk – Curly Russell – Buddy Rich, recorded on June 6, 1950. Other two tracks (A-4 and B-4) are from another recording session (including Kenny Dorham – Charlie Parker – Al Haig – Tommy Potter – Max Roach) on February – May, 1949.

The musical contents are what you already know – personally, this recording is so precious that we can listen to Thelonious Monk playing in the year 1950 which is so scarce.

The Genius Of Charlie Parker #4 – Bird And Diz
(Nippon Polydor [J] 20MJ-0026)

It was in 1990 when I firstly bought these recordings in LP format – it was Japanese 12-inch LP (Nippon Polydor 20MJ-0026, a straight reissue of Verve MGV-8006). Later in October 2004, I could obtain original 10-inch LP version for the first time, although the disc had many scratches and occured several skips. Soon after that in January 2005, I found and bought another copy which was in great condition at cheaper price (wow!) Later, I gave that skippy copy (for free) to Refugee-san who was very good at fixing skips and infinite loops. Of course, Refugee-san later did a great job on fixing that copy 🙂

And here are equivalent 78rpms – I started enjoying 78rpms in 2005, and little by little I collected these four in two years. One disc was heavily cracked during the airmail transit (and I had to find another copy from another seller); I won another disc from a certain seller but he did not respond at all (and I gave up then find another copy from another seller) – for me, recent two years were such time to complete these four 78rpms. The price I paid for these four 78rpms was nearly equal to that for the above 10-inch LP version (so I could get the 10-inch LP version at very cheaper price than it should be?). By the way, according to the JATP booklet again, each 78rpm (as well as equivalent 45rpm) costed 1.16 USD in the early 1950s – it’s interesting to know that four 78rpms costed a bit more expensive than one equivalent 10-inch LP release.

In my humble opinion, 78rpm versions has more powerful sounds than equivalent 10-inch LP version in every respect. Once you give it a listen with these 78rpms, you will not want to listen to 10-inch LP version anymore, I guess. But unfortunately (?) there is one important reason I have to keep this 10-inch version – A-4 “Passport” is alternate take compared with the 78rpm version. And what’s worse, I like the 10-inch LP version of “Passport” much better than the 78rpm version! (this scarce take can be heard only on 10-inch LP, 45rpm single release, as well as later LP/CD box sets) It sounds like a completely different tune – tempo is different, arrangement is different, improvisations are totally different. In this case, I think I need to keep both versions (four 78rpms and one 10-inch LP) . . .

  9. >Merco Plastic
