Granz’ Jazz to Shift To Clef Label Aug. 1

ずっと前から、調べよう調べようと思って忘れていたのですが、先日、別の調べ物をしているときに発見しました。1948年頃から Mercury とディストリビュート契約をしていたノーマン・グランツ音源が、グランツ本人の Clef レーベルに切り替わった時期。過去に調査した際に、1953年であることまでは特定できていたのですが、より詳しい切り替わり時期を調べようと思っていたのです。

The other day I happend to find the very article that identifies the period when Norman Granz stopped distribution contract with Mercury label and started his own Clef label – I found this while I was looking for info on other research topics… I knew it was in 1953 after my past research, but I wanted to identify more precise period of when the Mercury-Clef transition was conducted.

Call For Help: Norgran MGN-1087

Verve MGV-8029 としてリリースされた「Stan Getz ’57」のオリジナルイシューとされる、Norgran MGN-1087「Stan Getz ’56」の現物をお持ちの方（あるいは「持っている人を知っている」「見たことある」でも構いません）がいらっしゃいましたら、ぜひわたくしまでご一報下さい。残念ながら私は実物を見たことがありません。

Anyone has an original copy of Norgran MGN-1087 “Stan Getz ’56”? This has been said as the original issue of Verve MGV-8029 “Stan Getz ’57”. Drop me a line if you have that copy (or if you know a person who owns that copy, or even if you have seen that copy). Unfortunately I have never seen the actual copy.


現在 ハリー・ワインガー さんが作業中のスタン・ゲッツの CD ボックスで使用する予定の、ジャケット写真およびレーベル写真を探しているとこのことです。

Currently Mr. Harry Weinger has been looking for the jacket scan and the label scan of the Norgran MGN-1087, as he’s been working on a Stan Getz CD boxset project.

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice –
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

ある人種 (笑) にとっては、究極の選択かも知れません。
同一内容、ほぼ同時期のリリースのアルバムだとして、 ジャケット付の LP をとるか、 ジャケなしの SP をとるか。

(this article is my thoughts (and beyond) on Chet Baker’s famous “guilty pleasure for Chet’s fans” album left on Verve label. English version of this article (probably) will not be available.)

まぁこのアルバムを彼の「最高傑作」だの「一番好きなアルバム」だのと言う人はさすがにいないでしょう (いたらごめんね)。 しかしその一方で、このアルバムを聴く度に、いろんなことに思いがめぐり、私はとても複雑な気持ちになります。

Various V.A. LPs, Pt.3 – Special College Jazz Album

V.A. 特集 第2回 に続き今回紹介する 3枚目は、Verve レーベルの Various ものです。 Clef、Norgran、そしてこの Verve と通じて、 Norman Granz が立ち上げたレーベルにおいて いわゆるサンプラー的なアルバムというのはどうもなさそうなのですが (実際にはあるかも知れません。 もしご存じでしたらご教授下さい)、 コンピレーション盤、いわゆる Various ものはカタログ内に大量に存在しています。 これもそんな 1枚なのですが…

Here is the third V.A. LP, from the Verve label (previous entries can be reached from here: Pt. 1 and Pt. 2). As far as I know, there is no “Sampler LPs” of Clef / Norgran / Verve labels (all supervised by Norman Granz) – but if you happen to know the existence of Clef / Norgran / Verve sampler LPs, please let me know. On the other hand, these labels had so many Various Artists LPs (or what is called “compilations”) in the catalogue. This LP is one of them, but there is an interesting fact…

Universal “Jazz The Best&amp” LP Collection Pt.2

実際のリリースから随分と間があいてしまいましたが、 昨年リリースされて そこそこ好評だった ユニバーサル　”JAZZ THE BEST ”LPコレクション の第2弾がこの夏リリースされました。

In last year, Universal Music Japan released a bunch of fine Jazz LP reissues entitled Universal “JAZZ THE BEST” LP Collection, most of which were highly acclaimed by vinyl enthusiasts. To follow the success, Universal Japan released another bunch of LP reissues this summer.



今回の復刻にあたり、岡村融さんを通じて UCJU-9031 / UCJU-9034 / UCJU-9043 と 3枚に関して、光栄にも貢献することができました (復刻の元となるオリジナルジャケットとレーベルの貸出)。 また、UCJU-9025 や UCJU-9039 といった EmArcy 原盤については、ファーストプレスのチェックポイントを指摘しました (ジャケット裏の印刷色やレーベルの微妙な特徴など)。

It was my great pleasure that, thru the famous Tohru Okamura-san, I could do a bit of contribution upon some of these LP reissues – lent the 1st pressing copies of UCJU-9031, UCJU-9034 and UCJU-9043 to the Universal Music Japan for reproduction purpose; also pointed out the detailed checkpoints of reproducing EmArcy LPs such as UCJU-9025 and UCJU-9039 (colour of the ink on the back cover, detailed design of the centre label, for example).

出来上がった製品の見本盤を 9月下旬に頂きましたが、相変わらず細やかな配慮が感じられる良質のリイシューで、特に UCJU-9031 や UCJU-9034 では、当時リリースされたオリジナル盤ではなし得なかった音質を獲得するに至っていると感じました。

In last September, I received the sample copies of the products. And I found that this 2nd series of the LP reissue project was also fascinating kind as well as 1st series. Especially, on such titles as UCJU-9031 and UCJU-9034, I feel that the brand-new-cut discs can deliver very detailed and beautiful sounds which even the original 1st pressing copies did not have.

Universal “Jazz The Best” LP Collection is out

久々に期待していた 今回の日本盤 LP リイシュー。全20タイトル中本日10タイトルが発売されました。さてさて、肝心の「おと」の方はどうでしょう? さすがに全タイトルは買えないので、とりあえず EmArcy の 2タイトルだけ買ってみました。

The long-awaited LP reissue series by Universal Music Japan is out. Among 20 titles in all, 10 titles have been released today. Well, how does they “sound” anyway? I can’t afford to buy all titles, so this time I bought two EmArcy titles.
