さて、 V.A. 特集 第1回 に続き紹介する 2枚目は、あの Time レーベルのサンプラーです。 EmArcy レーベルをたちあげたあの Bob Shad が Mercury を離れて自ら立ち上げたレーベルとして知られており、Booker Little、Sonny Clark、Kenny Dorham などの作品が有名です。このサンプラー LP は、そのうちトランペッターに焦点を絞って編集されたもののようです。

Second sampler LP I’d like to introduce here is the one by Time label. Time was a label of that Bob Shad, who was famous as a producer of EmArcy label. Bob Shad left Mercury in 1958, and started his own label, Time.

このアルバムが有名なのは、ひとえに Clifford Brown の 2曲が収録されているからです。 え、なんで Clifford Brown が Time レーベルから? どうやら、Clifford Brown の EmArcy 録音のプロデューサーであった Bob Shad が、その時代のお蔵入り音源をこのアルバムにこっそり入れたということの様です。A-1 “The Boss Man” というのは “Caravan” のことで、EmArcy MG-36102 に収録された Caravan の別テイク、またはリハーサルテイクです。同じく B-2 “Clifford’s Fantasy” は EmArcy MG-36008 収録の “Sweet Clifford” 別テイクということの様です。しかし、このアルバムに収められているバージョンは、前者が 3分5秒、後者に至っては 1分47秒という抜粋 (注1) なのでした… がっくし。

注1： この 2曲はのちに (児山紀芳さん渾身の) CD ボックス “Brownie – The Complete EmArcy Recordings” にも収録されましたが、残念ながらそこでも全く同じ抜粋テイクの様です。ということは、完全バージョンのマスターテープはもはや失われてしまったということなんでしょうか?

This album is rather famous, simply because it contains two innevitable tracks performed by Clifford Brown – what? Clifford Brown on Time label? The truth may be, that Bob Shad (who was a producer of EmArcy label and Clifford Brown’s sessions) discovered previously unreleased tracks and he included them on this album. A-1 “The Boss Man” is actually an alternate take (or reharsal take) of “Caravan” which originally appeared on EmArcy MG-36102. Likewise, B-2 “Clifford Fantasy” is an alternate take of “Sweet Clifford” on EmArcy MG-36008. However, it is a pity that these two tracks on this album are NOT complete but excerpts (“The Boss Man” is only 3 minutes and 5 seconds long, while “Clifford’s Fantasy” is just 1 minute and 47 seconds… what a mess!

さて、Time レーベルといえば、もう一つ不名誉な話題があります。同時代の他のレーベルに比べて、音質が著しく劣っているというものです。実際、このアルバムに収録されている Clifford Brown の 2曲 (1954年録音) と、他の 4曲との音質差は歴然としていて (もちろん Clifford の 2曲は素晴らしい音質です)、いくら元レーベルが異なるからといっても同じプロデューサーの録音とは思えない程です。いろんな意味でこのアルバムはどうもしまらないアルバムだと言えそうです。

Talking about the Time label itself, there is a dishonorable fact – the sound quality is way poor compared with other labels in similar era. Actually, two Clifford Brown tracks on this album (recorded in 1954) and other four tracks sounds so different (Clifford’s tracks sounds so powerful and solid, of course), and I can hardly believe that all these tracks were produced by the same producer… As a result, I think this LP is not recommended for anyone in various aspects.
