前回 ME-1 “Vinicius & Odette Lara” を紹介しましたが、今回は続く大傑作 (敢えてそう書こう)、 ME-2 の Lúcio Alves です。 前回同様、 ELENCO Discography からもリンクを張ってあります。

Preceded by my past post on ME-1 “Vinicius & Odette Lara”, here is “the masterpiece” (at least in my humble opinion) – second Elenco LP album (ME-2) by Lúcio Alves. As always, please also refer the ELENCO Discography entry.

ディック・ファルネイ (Dick Farney) と並び、プレボッサ期から活躍した歌手、ルシオ・アウヴェス (Lúcio Alves。Namorados da Lua (1941-1947) を経て 1948年よりソロ活動を開始。

Lúcio Alves was a distinguished and talented singer as well as Dick Farney, both of whom had been very popular since the pre-Bossa Nova period. Lúcio Alves started his professional career as a member of Namorados da Lua (1941-1947), then in 1948 he turned into a solo singer.

ボッサ・ノーヴァ黎明期の代表作 “Sua Voz Íntima, Sua Bossa Nova – Interpretando Sambas em 3-D” (1959) では、緻密なアレンジで同時に弾ける様に軽快なサンバをバックに、絶頂期の喉を聴かせてくれます。Odeon レーベルからリリースされたそのアルバムのプロデューサーは アロイジオ・ヂ・オリヴェイラ (Aloysio de Oliveira) さん。

His famous album “Sua Voz Íntima, Sua Bossa Nova – Interpretando Sambas em 3-D” (1959) was a great one in the early Bossa Nova era, filled with very elaborate arrangements and up-tempo Samba rhythms, and his great singing is fully featured. The album was produced by Aloysio de Oliveira (who worked in the Brazilian Odeon label at the time).

その Aloysio さんが、ELENCO レーベルを創立し、2作目として Lúcio Alves さんを招き入れて 1963年に製作したのがこの ME-2 です。

Then when Aloysio started his own label ELENCO, he proudly invited Lúcio Alves to record this album, ME-2.

スムーズな声質と、滑らかにコントロールされるブレス、そして要所要所でのビブラート。 Lúcio Alves さんの素晴らしい歌唱が全曲でひきたてられる見事な出来栄えです。 全曲が ホベルト・メネスカル (Roberto Menescal) 作曲、ホナルド・ボスコリ (Ronaldo Boscoli 作詞で、 アップビートなボッサ・ノーヴァからしっとり聴かせるナンバーまで、非常に統一感を感じるメロディで満たされています。

Smooth voice tone, well-controlled breaths, refreshing vibratos in the right time – Lúcio Alves’ marvellous singing can be heard on every track. All songs were written by Roberto Menescal (music) and Ronaldo Boscoli (words) – from up-tempo Bossa Nova tracks to melodious ballad tunes, all melodies keep vivid consistencies throughout the album.

A-1 “Balançamba”、A-2 “Rio”、 A-4 “Dan-Cha-Cha” は、Menescal さんらしいコード進行と楽しげな雰囲気に満ちたゴキゲンな演奏で、その上でさらりと歌いあげる Alves さんもとても気持ちよさそう。続くアルバム ME-3 “A Bossa Nova de Roberto Menescal” と同一のテイストを感じさせられる、ELENCO レーベルらしいイメージの演奏です。

A-1 “Balançamba”, A-2 “Rio” and A-4 “Dan-Cha-Cha” are the “happy side” of the album – backing group really finds the groove! Alves’ voice is also cruising. These tracks have very similar tastes as the following album ME-3 “A Bossa Nova de Roberto Menescal” – the performances are very typical ELENCO style.

しかし、このアルバムの白眉はその他の楽曲にあります。「大人の夜のジャズ」テイストとボッサ・ノーヴァが合体したかの様な「聴かせる」ナンバーが目白押しなのです。

However, other tracks (“mellow/blue side”) makes this album a real masterpiece – they really make magical chemistry of “Night Jazz for adults” and Bossa Nova, IMHO.

A-3 “Têtê” や A-5 “Branca Paz” など、ネルソン・リドル (Nelson Riddle) アレンジで歌う フランク・シナトラ (Frank Sinatra) を彷彿とさせるかの如き (*1) 見事なアレンジです。セレステ、フルートが効果的に使われているのも、そういった雰囲気を引き立てるのに貢献しています。

(*1)： 実際、当時のブラジルでは、アメリカのジャズから多大な影響を受けたミュージシャン達が活動していましたし、シナトラもブラジル国内で絶大な人気を誇っていたそうです。ですので、本アルバム製作にあたって、シナトラを念頭に置いていたとしても不思議ではないでしょう。

Listen to A-3 “Têtê” and A-5 “Branca Paz” – you may notice they sounds like Frank Sinatra singing Bossa Nova ballads with Nelson Riddle arrangements.

A-6 “Negro” ではコントラバスとティンパニによるもの悲しいイントロから、ストリングスをバックにマイナーキーの佳曲がしっとりと歌いこまれます。そして B-1 “Ai Se Eu Pudesse” ではなんと、Stan Kenton か Pete Rugolo かと聴き間違う程ゴージャスなブラスアンサンブルに導かれ、フレーズの強弱が見事な (Sinatra も真っ青?) 歌唱が最高です。

On A-6 “Negro”, blue and moody intro by contrabass and tympani is really impressing. Furthermore, B-1 “Ai Se Eu Pudesse” fully features very bold and gorgeous brass ensemble (as if it were performed by Stan Kenton or Pete Rugolo), followed by brilliant up-down singing by Alves (even Sinatra would also be very impressed on that!)

Menescal さんの代表曲である B-2 “Nós e o Mar” (二人と海) のアレンジも最高です。まるで海岸をやわらかに洗う波の様に、4小節毎におしよせるハイハットの余韻が素晴らしく、Alves さんの大人の歌唱を素晴らしく引き立てています。

The arrangement of Menescal’s famous tune, B-2 “Nós e o Mar”, is superb – the reveberations of hi-hit cymbals really sound like gentle waves washing sand.

同じく Menescal さんの名曲 B-3 “O Barquinho” (小舟) ではストリングスセクションが見事な緊張感を演出しており、当時アメリカで大量生産された凡百のボッサ・ノーヴァ「風」アレンジを一蹴するかの様な「お手本」的名演でしょう。B-5 “Errinho a Tôa” は、トランペット、テナーサックス、ヴィオラン(ギター)、ストリングスの絡みが本当に素晴らしいアレンジで、感動的な完成度。あまりにも短い 2分23秒。もっと聴いていたい。B-4 “Além da Imaginação” とラストの B-6 “Lagrima Primeira” では、セレステが印象的な小編成をバックにした Alves さんの情感溢れる歌唱が素晴らしくシビれます。

On B-3 “O Barquinho” (Menescal’s another famous tune), strings section presents wonderful tensions – it must be the masterpiece of Bossa Nova arrangement, unlike tons of “Bossa Nova-like sounds” recorded in the US at the time. B-5 “Errinho a Tôa” is another masterpiece, with splended contrasts among trumpet, tenor sax, violão (guitar) and strings. B-4 “Além da Imaginação” and the last track B-6 “Lagrima Primeira” features emotionally sophisticated singing by Alves, backed by small combo featuring celeste.

本アルバムも、素晴らしいミキシングと圧倒的な音圧で聴かせるモノーラル録音です。残念なことに、私の持っている盤では A面の音質が (ELENCO としては) 若干物足りなさを感じてしまいます。鳥肌が立つくらい生々しい再生音を聴かせる B面と比べるとその差は歴然です。レーベル傍のマトリクス刻印を見てみると、A面にだけ「2」という枝番が追加されていました。両面のマトリクスが枝番なしの盤だと A面も凄いことになっているのかもしれません。

Like other ELENCO LP albums, this album is also in monaural with superb mixing and powerful sound. Unfortunately, my copy has (a bit) inferior sound quality on Side-A (still nice though), while on the other hand Side-B can play spine-chilling mono sound. I looked at the matrix stamps on the dead wax area very carefully, and I found Side-A’s matrix had the suffix “2” added – if a copy without “2” suffix on both sides was on my hands, it would present superb sound reproduction, I suppose . . .
