GyroDec では、初代 Mk.I から2000年頃のモデル Mk.IV まで Papst AC モータ（901 3520 001）が使われていましたが、Papst 社が当該モータの製造を1999年頃に中止してしまったため、2001年以降に製造されている GyroDec では、現在入手可能な新品でも、DC モータが採用されています。

GyroDec, since its beginning Mk.I until 2000 Mk.IV, had synchronous Papst AC Motor (901 3520 001) installed. However, Papst discontinued the particular motor in 1999 (and J.A. Michell used the last batch of motors until 2000), and post-2000 GyroDec (Mk.V) adopts DC Motor instead.

国内外の各種オークションサイトなどを探しても、Papst AC モータの中古やデッドストックは滅多に見つかりません。かといって、AC モータが搭載されている中古の GyroDec を買うのも本末転倒です。なにより、レコードを聴けなくなる期間が長くなるのは辛いので、あきらめて DC モータを調達する方向で考えることにしました。

Unfortunately, few used units (or “new old stock” or “deadstock”) of the Papst AC Motor cannot be found on market all around the world. And it’s kind of absurd to look for another used GyroDec with the AC Motor installed. Furthermore, it was really painful for me that I could not enjoy spinning records – that’s why I started thinking of obtaining a brand new DC Motor.

考えなければいけない問題は他にもあります。まず、現在使っている3スピード（33/45/78）対応のプーリーが、DCモータにしてしまうと使えないため、78回転の再生をどうするか、ということ。

A few more things to consider were still there. First, I need three-speed (33/45/78) playback, but the pulley from the AC Motor cannot be used along with the DC Motor, so I had to figure out how to accomplish 78 rpm playback with the new DC motor.

そして、モータ形状や取り付け方式の違いにより、モータユニット上部のプレートも交換する必要があるのですが、現在の Michell 社はもはやブロンズ色の塗装を施した GyroDec を製造していないため、モータユニット周りの見た目がちぐはぐになる恐れがある、という点も悩みどころです。

And the second, the colour of the motor unit top plate. My Mk.III has bronze coating, but Michell currently doesn’t have bronze colour variation (now silver and black available), so I had to make my mind to accept the colour mismatch around the motor unit…?

1つ目の問題 (3スピード対応どうする) は、True Point Audio 社が販売している DC モータ用 サードパーティ電源ユニット を発見したことで解決しました。Web サイトに値段も書かれていないので、メールで問い合わせをし、価格や送料、その他いろんな質問をして、購入を決めました。

The first issue (how to get 3-speed capability) was briefly resolved after I found the Third-party Power Unit for the DC Motor by True Point Audio. I e-mailed to this company for the price and shipping fee, along with a few technical questions. Then I decided to buy this unit.

2020年11月25日、リバプールのファクトリーからはるばる東京に届いた電源ユニットでしたが、ユニットに貼られている赤いシールに 240V と書かれているのを見つけ、再度メールで問い合わせたところ、やはり240V仕様とのことでした。往復送料は向こう持ちで送り返すことになり、100V 仕様に直してもらうことになりました。

Then on Nov. 25, 2020 – the True Point Audio three-speed power unit arrived all the way from Liverpool to Tokyo. But I noticed the red warning sticker on the unit, which reads “240V” – so I had to send the unit back to England to get it modified for 100V.

そして2020年12月24日、100V 仕様となった電源ユニットが再び到着しました。このユニットは、フロントパネルで 33 1/3 回転 / 45回転 / 78回転を変更できる他、スピード微調整用のボタンもフロントパネルに備わっていますので、非常に便利です。こういう時に絶対音感を持っていると楽なもので（笑）ストロボスコープなしで速度の微調整をして正確な回転スピードにあわせることができます。

Finally on Dec. 24, 2020 arrived the modified 100V version of the PSU (Power Supply Unit). This unit is very easy to use, with the 33 1/3 / 45 / 78 switches and speed adjust switches, all on the front panel. For me who has an absolute pitch the speed adjust buttons are very handy to fine-tune the correct rotating speed without stroboscopes.

唯一残念だったのは、私が購入した直後、おそらく2020年末だと思いますが、この電源ユニットの更に性能向上したバージョン（web 上では「MIDAS テクノロジ = Mains Isolated, DC Advanced System」と書かれています）が発表されたことで、タイミングさえあえばそちらを購入したかったところです。

The only regret to this wonderful product is that there is an improved version with the “MIDAS” (= Mains Isolated, DC Advanced System) technology, that was introduced shortly after I bought my unit. If the timing was right, I would buy the improved version of course so…

そして2つ目の問題（モータユニットのトッププレートの色問題）。2020年11月12日にダメ元で J.A. Michell 社にメールで問い合わせてみたところ、「確かに現在はブロンズ色のプレートは製造していないが、ファクトリーに少しだけ在庫があるから、それでよければ DC モータと組み合わせて提供することは可能」という返事がもらえました。

Then the second issue (motor top plate colouring): on Nov. 12, 2020, I sent an e-mail to J.A. Michell company, then I luckly got a good reply: “Whilst we no longer offer gold as a colour option I do have some gold motor top plates here.”

英国の工房的な老舗の会社ならではなのか、はわかりませんが、クレジットカードや PayPal 払いではなく銀行振り込みのみの対応とのこと。さすがに日本の通常の銀行からイギリスの銀行に送金を行うと、かなりの手数料が必要となります。そこでなにかいい方法はないかと調べたところ、TransferWise というステキなサービスを見つけました。このサービス自体や異常に安い手数料を実現する仕組みが非常に興味深いのですが、それは この辺りの記事 をごらんください。

J.A. Michell only accept bank transfers as a payment method: paying by Credit Cards or PayPal is not accepted. As I know international bank transfer needs an inevitable amount of fee, I tried looking for any good service and … I found TransferWise! It’s a very unique service and platform, enabling international money transfer at very very low fee.

というわけで、無事支払いも完了、ブロンズプレートに装着された新品のDCモータユニットが到着したのは2020年12月29日のことでした。つまり、2ヶ月弱、レコードが聴けなかったことになります。ディジタル再生があったとはいえ、レコードをかけられない期間は本当に辛かった。。。

TransferWise made me proceed the payment easily and quickly. Finally, the new DC motor unit with the gold/bronze top plate arrived here at home on Dec. 29, 2020. Finally, after two months of “GyroDec withdrawal symptoms”, I could finally enjoy spinning GyroDec with loving vinyl/shellac records! It had been so hard for me, although I had digital playback.

新しいDCモータには33回転用と45回転用の2つの溝が切られたプーリーが取り付けられており、今回の電源ユニットでは45回転の溝にベルトをかけて、3スピードを使い分けます。この DCモータ + True Point Audio 電源ユニットの組み合わせは、今までお世話になってきた Papst ACモータ + GyroPower QC 電源ユニットの組み合わせ（この電源ユニット自体がまた素晴らしいアップグレードでした）よりも、さらに静粛さを増し、再生音にも非常に良い効果をもたらしてくれました。

The new DC motor has a two-grooved pulley installed, one for 33 1/3 rpm, the other for 45 rpm. The new PSU by True Point Audio requires the belt to use the groove for 45 rpm, then switches the speed by pushing the front buttons. The impression? Papst AC Motor + GyroPower QC PSU (which itself was a superb upgrade back in the days) was great, but this DC motor + True Point Audio PSU provides much quieter motion, resulting in much better sound playback.

ACモータが壊れたことがきっかけでしたが、結果としてターンテーブルのアップグレードが行えたことになります。1995年に製造され、2003年に中古で購入したこのターンテーブル、もう20年近いお付き合いですが、これからも永く愛用していきたいと思います。

It really was a pity that I had to say good-bye to the original Papst AC motor (and GyroPower QC PSU), but because of that, I could do yet another “upgrade” to my loving GyroDec – manufactured in 1995, came to my house in 2003 – for nearly twenty years it kept me bringing wonderful sound and joy. I’ll keep loving this fantastic turntable any longer.
