我が家で Michell Orbe SE が稼働し始めて、はや9ヶ月が経過しました。そのパフォーマンスには非常に満足しています。
It’s been already nine months since the installation of Michell Orbe SE at home. I have been totally satisfied with the performance.
一方、20年以上お世話になった弟分である Michell GyroDec を引退させられないのは、Orbe で 78回転盤がかけられないためです。
On the other hand, I cannot retire Orbe’s little brother Michell GyroDec, which has served me well for over 20 years, because Orbe cannot play 78rpm.
そこで、33⅓ / 45 / 78 回転の3スピード対応のプーリの制作を英国の工房にお願いしてみました。
So I asked a workshop in England to make a custom pulley that can do three speeds: 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm.
オリジナルの Papst AC モータから純正DCモータに換装した GyroDec Mk.III では、True Point Audio の 3スピード電源ユニット を使っていました。
My GyroDec Mk.III, with its original Papst AC motor replaced by Michell’s genuine DC motor, is driven by a True Point Audio‘s 3-speed PSU for GyroDec’s DC Motor.

さらにその前、純正の Papst AC モータ時代は、3スピード対応のプーリのデッドストックを奇跡的に在庫していたアメリカのショップから購入して使っていました。電源ユニットは Michell 純正のアップグレード電源、GyroPower QC でした。
Before that, in the Papst AC motor years, I could buy a 3-speed pulley for GyroDec AC motor, from a reseller in the U.S. that stocked it miraculously. The PSU I used for the AC motor was GyroPower QC, Michell’s offical upgrade power supply available in GyroDec/Orbe’s AC motor years.

2005年に入手した、ACモータ版 GyroDec / Orbe 用の 3スピード対応プーリ（50Hz用）
左に置いてあるのは、オリジナルの 2スピードダブルベルト対応プーリ (50Hz用）
しかし、Orbe の DC モータは、GyroDec の DC モータと大幅に仕様が異なっています、まず、Orbe DC モータには、タコフィードバック付きの “Never-Connected” 専用電源ユニットが必要となります。また、モータも電源ユニットも、Michell による別売りはされておらず、外部にも仕様が一切公開されていません。
Orbe’s DC motor, however, differs significantly from GyroDec’s DC motor. First, Orbe motor requires a dedicated “Never-Connected” (NC) power supply unit with tacho feedback. Furthermore, neither the Orbe’s motor itself nor the NC PSU are sold separately by Michell, and no specification are disclosed to the outside.

そのため、サードパーティが Orbe 用3スピード電源ユニットを制作できません。
Therefore, it is not possible for third parties to produce a custom 3-speed PSU for Orbe.
電源ユニットを交換できないが、78回転を実現したい。そうなると、残る手立ては、78回転用のプーリを探すことです。
The PSU cannot be replaced, but I want to achieve 78rpm. Then, the only remaining choice is to find a pully for 78rpm.
Michell Engineering 自体が（現在もストックしているかは不明ですが）DCモータ用78回転専用プーリをかつて作っていたことが知られています。また、数年前にイタリアだったかどこかの工房が作った78回転専用プーリが eBay に出品されていたのを目にしたこともありました。
It is known that Michell Engineering itself used to make 78 rpm pulleys for DC motors (although it is not known if they are still in stock). Also, a few years ago, I saw a 78 rpm pulley made by a workshop in Italy or somewhere else listed on eBay.
しかし、78回転専用プーリを導入した場合、通常の33⅓回転盤や45回転盤をかける際、そして78回転盤をかける際、そのたびにプーリを交換しなければなりません。
However, if I installed a dedicated 78rpm pulley, I would have to change the pulley each time I play regular 33⅓ or 45 rpm discs, and each time I play 78 rpm discs.
そこで、33⅓/45/78 3スピード対応のプーリを作ってくれるところはないか、探してみることにしました。また、Orbe NC PSU 自体で、33⅓回転と45回転が変更可能ですから、33⅓/78 2スピード対応プーリでも構わないわけです。
So I decided to look for a workshop or a company that makes a special 33⅓/45/78 3-speed pulley. Alternatively, since the Orbe NC PSU itself can change the speed between 33⅓ and 45 rpm, a 33⅓/78 2-speed pulley would also be fine.
あっちに問い合わせては断られ、こっちに問い合わせても無理と言われ、結局最後はいつものように True Point Audio の Charles Melling さんにお願いすることになりました。
After inquiring a workshop and being turned down, and then inquiring another workshop and being told it was impossible, I ended up asking Charles Melling of True Point Audio, as usual, to help me out.
2023年6月にお願いし、代金も前払いしたのですが、いろいろあって（詳細は割愛）完成が遅れに遅れ、最終的に完成したのは2024年3月でした。
I asked for the custom project in June 2023, and paid for it in advance, but due to various circumstances (details omitted here), the completion was delayed, and it was finally completed in March 2024.

Michell Engineering に直接問い合わせて、プーリの径の正確な寸法を教えてもらい、その値を Charles さんに伝えることで制作してもらいました。
I contacted Michell Engineering directly and asked them to give me the exact dimensions of the pulley diameter. I then provided those values to Charles, who manufactured this custom pulley.

なお、ACモータ用のプーリは、スピンドル径が 4mm で、かつプーリーの径も全く異なるので、相互に互換性はありません。
Please note that pulleys for AC motors are not interexchangeable, because the spindle diameter is 4mm, and the pulley diameter is completely different from that for DC motors.
とりあえずこれで、Orbe SE で78回転盤を聴くことが可能になりました。GyroDec どうしようかな。。。（笑）
Anyway, it is now possible to listen to 78rpm discs on my Orbe SE. — now, what should I do with my GyroDec? 🙂
