Mara Carlyle Live at Pizza Express

マシュー・ハーバート (Matthew Herbert) 人脈でもよく知られている、マラ・カーライル (Mara Carlyle) さんの新譜が、クリスマスイブにデジタルで公開されました。Bandcamp で無料からダウンロードできます（もちろん「投げ銭」も可能で、私も支払わせていただきました）。

Mara Carlyle, known to many listeners through the Matthew Herbert connection, released a new album digitally on Christmas Eve. You can download it from Bandcamp for free (of course you can also pay what you like, and I did).

選曲がいいですね。いわゆるスタンダードナンバーから、Mara さんの愛聴曲、そして自作曲をとりまぜつつ、統一感あるラインアップです。

The songs are well chosen. The set mixes standards with personal favorites of Mara’s and songs of her own, yet the whole thing hangs together.

マラ・カーライルさんはヴォーカルのみに徹し（一部ではミュージック・ソーも演奏）、バッキングは シネマティック・オーケストラ (The Cinematic Orchestra) のピアニスト ニック・ラム (Nick Ramm) さんが担当しています。実際のライブ演奏をそのままストレートに録音したもので、観客がワイングラスやナイフ・フォークをカチャカチャさせる音が時々入ったりしているのも、 ピザ・エクスプレス・ライブ での一夜を追体験できるようで、けっこう没入感ある音作りです。

Mara Carlyle sticks to singing here (she also plays the musical saw in places), and the backing is handled by Nick Ramm, pianist with The Cinematic Orchestra. The album is a straight recording of an actual live performance, and now and then you hear the audience clinking their wine glasses and rattling their knives and forks. It lets you experience a night at Pizza Express Live for yourself, and the sound is quite immersive.

彼女の音楽を知ったのは、2004年リリースのファーストソロアルバム “The Lovely” (Accidental) でしたが、その頃からアコースティックとエレクトロニックのブレンドというか、独自の透明感を持った音作りが巧い方で、愛聴してきました。アルバムリリースのペースはゆっくりとしたものですが、ここ数年また精力的に活動されているようで、今後も追っていきたいと思います。

I first came across her music through “The Lovely” (Accidental), her first solo album from 2004. Even then she was deft at blending the acoustic and the electronic into a sound with a transparency all her own, and I have loved listening to her ever since. Her albums arrive at an unhurried pace, but she seems to have been working energetically again these past few years, and I intend to keep following her work.
