一年程前に ELENCO Discography を掲載しましたが、各アルバムの紹介記事を書こう書こうと思いつつ忘れていました (笑) 思いだしついでに、記念すべき最初のアルバムを。

An year ago I published the entry entitled ELENCO Discography, and I wished to add more entries dedicated to each ELENCO title. However, only time has passed and here is no entry – it was just my fault (I completely forgot about it!). Finally, here is the first entry, for the first ELENCO title.

残念ながら、手元には詳しいパーソネルや録音年月日の情報がありません (もしかしたら、最近の CD リイシューにはそのテの情報が載っているのかもしれませんが) ので、その点はご容赦下さい。

Unfortunately, I don’t have any further information on this album, such as detailed personnel and recorded date (it would be possible that recent CD reissue has such kind of data, but I don’t know for sure).

さて、このアルバムです。 カタログ番号 (ME-1) の通り、 アロイジオ・ヂ・オリヴェイラ (Aloysio de Oliveira) さんが 1963年に ELENCO レーベルを立ち上げて最初にリリースしたアルバムですが、 意表を突いて (?) 意外な組み合わせをフロントにたててきました。 この分野での最重要人物の一人、作詞家、詩人である ヴィニシウス・ヂ・モライス (Vinicius de Morais) と、この録音時は歌手としては素人同然だった (?) 女優 オデッチ・ララ (Odette Lara) です。

Now, the album itself – as the catalogue number (ME-1) suggests, this was the very first album ever released from ELENCO label, which Aloysio de Oliveira established in 1963. Here on the album Aloysio take us by suprise, featuring a combination of two unexpected singers – Vinicius de Morais (a famous and important lyricist and a poet) and Odette Lara (an actress, and probably an amateur as a singer when this album was recorded?).

この二人がかわるがわる、曲によってはデュエットで、 これまた最重要人物のひとり バーデン・パウエル (Baden Powell) 作曲 Vinicius 作詞というチームのペンになる12曲をうたいあげます。

These two singers sing every track by turn (or they sing in duet on some tracks) – and interestingly, all twelve tracks were written by “the team”, another important songwriter (as well as a distinguished guitarist) Baden Powell and Vinicius himself.

Vinicius さんの朴訥とした、しかし味のあるヴォーカルと、 Odette Lara さんの魅惑的なヴォイスを楽しむのもありでしょうが、 ここではやはり黄金のソングライターチームによる楽曲 (というより Baden Powell さんの作曲) と、コンサバな様でいて実に多彩なバックの演奏のアレンジを楽しむのが吉でしょう。

Vinicius’ honest and friendly singing as well as Odette Lara’s charming vocal would be very enjoyable. However on this album, we should concentrate on great songwriting by the team (or Baden Powell’s songwriting ability) and colourful diversion of arrangements.

アレンジャーはあの Moacyr Santos さん。 Baden Powell さんの名曲 “Berimbau” も 他ではちょっと聴けない独特のアレンジで非常に興味深い。 サンバ・カンソン的なアレンジあり、ジャズっぽいフィーリングあり、王道ボッサ・ノーヴァ風ありと 多彩な雰囲気を楽しめます。

The arranger on this LP was that Moacyr Santos. For example, listen to the very first track “Berimbau” – it’s definitely one of Baden Powell’s masterpieces – it sounds and is arranged very unique, unlike other famous performances of this tune. Arrangements of other tracks also show fruitful variations, from Samba-canção, Jazzy moods to mainstream Bossa-Nova.

また、オリジナルモノーラル盤ならではの圧倒的な音圧も素晴らしいです。 CD や再発 LP での (恐らくオリジナルマルチトラックマスターからリミックスされた) ステレオミックスと比べると、 音の力強さが余りにも凄くて、同じパフォーマンスとは思えない程です。

Of course, very powerful sound reproduction from original monaural LP is also superb – Powerful and beautiful mono sound presents better artistry of this performance, compared with CD and reissue LP (both of which probably were remastered from original multi-channel master tapes) – we can hardly believe they are the same performance.
