時代錯誤と揶揄されようとも信念を貫き通した、レトロマニアの愛すべき頑固親父。ラーズ (The La’s) の リー・メイヴァース (Lee Mavers) と並び、1990年代初頭の UK インディーロックシーンで強烈な個性を発揮した ステアーズ (The Stairs) の エドガー・サマータイム (Edgar Summertime)。その彼が昨年 (本名の Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones 名義で) ソロアルバムを出していたことを最近になって知り、大急ぎで CD を購入しました。本当に最近の情報に疎くなってしまい、悲しいやら情けないやら . . .

Two lovable guys, hopelessly stubborn kinda individuals, perfection of anachronism – they are Lee Mavers (of The La’s) and Edgar Summertime (of The Stairs), both of who left remarkable individualities in the UK Indie Rock scene in the early 1990s. Recently I happened to know Edgar Summertime released his first solo album (under his real name, Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones) in 2005, which is so astonishing and astounding. It’s really awful and shameful to me that I know few things about recent music scene nowadays…

オマージュなんてレベルをはるかに凌駕した、彼が心底打ち込み心底惚れ込んだ 1960年代ロックのエッセンスがぎっしり詰まった Stairs の大名盤?大迷盤? “Mexican R ‘N’ B” (1992) リリースから 13年。Paul Weller、Johnny Marr、St. Etienne といったあたりと絡む仕事を主に裏方として行っているという事は知ってはいましたが、いざソロアルバムという段になって、ここまで強烈なものをひっさげてくるとは。このアルバムを予備知識なしに聴いた人のうち一体何人が、これが 2005年の新譜だと思うというのでしょうか。

Thirteen years after “Mexican R ‘N’ B” (being filled with the essense of 1960s’ Rock music, which was not a mere homage but blood and breath of Edgar Summertime in his soul) by The Stairs – Edgar Jones has returned with his first solo album (although he had worked with such musicians/projects as Paul Weller, Johnny Marr and St. Etienne) – wow, what a powerful, soulful and down-to-earth music he has created! I wonder how many people (who listend to the album without any preliminary knowledge) understand that it was a “brand new album” out in 2005.

ブリティッシュビート / ガレージロック / ブルースロックのカラーで貫徹されていた Stairs の時とは異なり、本盤では音楽性のベクトルもより多様化し、彼の血肉と化し魂がこめられた「古い」音楽で満たされています。ジャイブ、モダンジャズ、戦前〜戦後ブルース、ドゥーワップ、ノーザンソウル、ファンク、その他いろいろ。全てが単なるデッドコピーやファッション的な引用、オマージュの域をはるかに越えるレベル。しかも驚くなかれ、数曲を除いて全て 自作曲。「古いのに新しい」圧倒的な完成度でもって心底打ちのめされます。なんだかんだいってニューウェーブ以降のミュージシャンにしかなし得ない完璧な世界。その衝撃度は Ry Cooder の旧き良き音楽の発掘ぶりですらかないません。

Unlike The Stairs’ album (concentrated on straightahead 1960s’ Rock flavours such as British Beat / Garage Rock / Blues Rock), this solo album contains full of wide variety of musical tastes – “old music” in his own mind, soul and blood, varying from Jive, Modern Jazz, Pre/Post-War Blues, Doo-Wop, to Northern Soul, Funk, and many more. Furthermore, all tracks are results of Edgar Jones’ perfectionism – not just a dead copy, not just an interpolation, not a mere homage, but his own music. Surprisingly, most tracks were written by Edgar himself. “Old, but New” music. This cannot be done by anybody but Edgar Jones, who belongs to the New-Wave period. In my humble opinion, even the encyplopedia of old music Ry Cooder can not beat Edgar Jones’ new album.

どの曲がどの辺を元ネタにしているかは聴いてからのお楽しみ、ということで詳しくは触れませんが、白眉の1曲だけ . . . Track 5 “Freedom” は、Glenn Miller と Charles Mingus が合体して Sly & The Family Stone の “Family Affair” になってしまった (?) 最高にカッチョイイナンバーです。

To preserve your future enjoyments, I will not write details of which track is a reminiscent of which song by who, but let me do it just for one track – track 5 “Freedom” is a way cool Funky number, sounds like “Glenn Miller marrying Charles Mingus to perform the number Family Affair of that Sly & The Family Stone” !

あいかわらずの モノーラル録音 (*1)。しかも、Stairs の時もそうでしたが、ハッタリのモノーラルではなくて、本当に「あの時代」に肉薄する音の感触。しかもそれぞれの楽曲にあわせて、その時代の音に見事に作られているのに脱帽します。曲によっては SP 盤のメタルマザーを聴いているんじゃないかと思わされる程のリアリティ。しかもその全てが、彼にとってはハッタリでもシャレでもなく、全部本気。これで惚れるなという方が無理でしょう。

(*1)： このアルバムを聴き込んだリスナーなら、最後の二曲がモノーラルでないことに気付かれたと思います。まるで SP を聴いているかの様な音触の Track 14 “Oh Man That’s Some Shit” では口笛が右チャンネルだけからさりげなく流れ、ラストの超ヘビーファンクナンバー (Edgar のベースがのたうちまわる!) Track 15 “It’s My Bass” (もちろんあの “It’s Your Thing” です) では完全なステレオ録音になっています。自分の作品であれだけモノーラル録音にこだわってきた彼が、新作のラストでこんな仕掛けを聴かせるのには、もしかしたら何か意図があるのかも知れません。

Like The Stairs’ album, this album is also presented in monaural sound (except the last two tracks – Edgar finally made stereo sounds – did he intentionally do ’em stereo with some secret meanings? I don’t know…). Also, it’s not a mere monaural mix, but a real monaural sound which was just like in the 1940s-1960s. Some bluesy tracks even sound real, as if we were listening to the 78rpm’s “metal mother” disc. He is not bluffing, not exaggerating, not joking. He is really serious. He is really into the great fidelity and power of monaural sound. I can’t help lovin’ that man!

改めて、当時新譜で買った Stairs 唯一の LP アルバム (*2) を聴いてみます。ハイエンドが綺麗に伸びていることを除けば、楽器やマイクの音色も、そして力強いモノーラルのミキシングも、1960年代 UK ロックそのまんま (それにしては演奏が素晴らしすぎるし下半身ががっちりしすぎですが)。ただでさえ Mick Jagger にそっくりなダミ声でがなっている上に、どの曲も Stones や Byrds を彷彿とさせるメロディと構成 (さすがに A-4 “Laughter In Their Eyes” のAメロディは、誰がどう聴いても Byrds の “Thoughts And Words” のパクリでしょう . . . 訴えられなかったのでしょうか)、しかも The Who を彷彿とさせる、タイトでドライブしまくりの圧倒的な演奏。当時賛否両論がわきおこったというか、メディアもリスナーも面白がってとりあげたのは必然的な流れだったのでしょう。

(*2)： 当時イギリスの Go! Discs からは LP と CD の両方でリリースされましたが、CD は 3曲多く収録されていました (名曲 “Flying Machine” と “When It All Goes Wrong”、“Take No Notice Of The World Outside”)。LP にこれらの 3曲は収録されませんでしたが、1991年のデビューマキシシングル “Weed Bus EP” (Go! Discs GODX63) で聴くことができます。更にややこしいことに、アメリカでリリースされた CD は、曲順めちゃくちゃの 14曲入りでした。Stairs のマキシシングルについては拙サイトのエントリ「The Stairs’ Four Maxi Singles」を御覧下さい。

しかし、当の本人 Edgar Summertime は至って大真面目だった (*3)。
「これが俺の好きな音だ、好きな演奏だ。なんか文句あっか?!」

(*3)： 実は彼は酒は飲まないものの、あっちでラリっていたことが知られています (笑)
現在はハッパはやめているようです。

その通り、あなたは絶対的に正しかった。Stairs が演っていたのは、パロディでもなく、パクリでもなく、Edgar さんが心の底から愛し血肉と化した音楽形態を思いのまま演奏していただけ。誰が文句をいえるというのでしょう。実際、内容は素晴らしいの一言なのですから。その後、Imaginary レーベルからマキシシングル “Last Time Around” (Imaginary MIRAGE 020) をリリースした後、バンドは休止。 La’s の Lee Mavers と同じく、レーベルとのゴタゴタがなければ (そしてラリっているのをほどほどにしていれば)、この空白の13年間にももっと趣味全開の (“Stairs” の一連の録音と “Soothing Music For Stray Cats” の間を埋めるミッシングリンク的な) 素敵なアルバムを多く残してくれていたのでは、と思うと . . . とても残念な気持ちになります。

幸いにも、私は 1992年 9月29日に心斎橋クラブクアトロで行われた Stairs のライブを観にいっています。レコードと何も変わらない、いやレコードよりもっと強烈な、ドライブ感溢れるその演奏にはシビれっぱなしでした。ライブのラストに Edgar Summertime がひとこと、「最後は Stones の曲をやるぜ」。クラブ内は大熱狂、そして演奏が始まったのですが、それはなぜか “Day Tripper” でした . . .クラブ内は大爆笑と共に更に熱狂度が高まったのでした。
