Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 20

On the previous part 19, I learned how the RIAA recording curve was accomplished with various recording amplifiers and built-in recording EQs from the mid-1950s to 1970s.

In this Pt. 20, we’re going to look for traces of how the U.S. labels migrated to RIAA, after the standardization of RIAA Recording and Reproducing Standards in early 1954, as well as to examine the genealogy of the studies and researches on EQ curves, from past to the present.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 18

On the previous part 17, I learned the situation of the consumer records in the U.S. since 1948 until 1953 (i.e. before the RIAA Standard was formulated in 1954), especially the disc EQ curves used for those records manufactured in the U.S.

At the same time, I did a brief research of phono EQ units (for magnetic cartridges) in the amplifiers that were sold in the era, when the rise of “Hi-Fi” movement became obvious.

This Pt. 18 — finally — will deal with the stories of the formulation of the following standards: 1953 NARTB Recording and Reproducing Standards; 1954 new AES Playback Curve; 1954 RIAA Standard Recording and Reproducing Characteristic.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 17

On the previous part 16, I learned on the history of the “Sapphire Club” aka “Sapphire Group”, that was formed during the WWII because of the shortage of industry materials, and led the standardization in the industry, from the competition with trade secrets to the open collaborations, especially among the engineers.

At the same time, I learned the foundation of the Audio Engineering magazine as well as the Audio Engineering Soeicty, as a result of collaboration through the Sapphire Group. Then I learned the details of the “AES Standard Playback Curve”, the first advocated standard characteristic for commercial records.

This time as Pt. 17, after a few months of absence (due to the continuous research etc.), I am going to continue learning the history of disc recording, especially during the period: from the advent of LP records, publication of the AES curve in Jan. 1951, to the eve of the industry standardization (formations of 1953 NARTB / 1954 new AES / 1954 RIAA). Please note, this part is going to be an extraordinarily lengthy article 🙂

Michell Orbe SE, here it comes!

My turntable is 1994 GyroDec, which I obtained second-hand in 2003. I remember it was equipped with the SME Series II imp tonearm, that was instantly swapped with the SME 3009-R tonearm.

It’s been twenty years already with this turntable, and I have never thought it time to let that go.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 16

On the previous part 15, I studied on the history of the term “High Fidelity (Hi-Fi)” as a side story, before I continue studying more on the history of disc recording and recording / reproducing EQ curves.

This time as Pt. 16, I am going back to continue learning the history of disc recording, including the establishment of an academic society specialized in audio engineering; and the proposed playback curve advocated by that society.

LEBO PEERLESS Generic Sleeve
