Sorry for scarce update on this website. I have at least three unposted articles (one of them started being written in last September!) and I think I will post some within a few days. In the meantime, here is my newest acquisition which replaces my previous copy with several defects . . .

It’s a famous “The Astaire Story” album by Fred Astaire, initially released in December 1952 from Mercury label. The original release, presented here, was a gorgeous cloth-bound binding album, which comes with session photos, David Stone Martin drawings (one colour, six black&white) and four blue vinyl LPs. It was a limited edition (only 1384 copies were manufactured and sold). My previous copy (which I acquired about three years ago) was numbered 1158, which (unfortunately) lacked six black&wite DSM drawings and the album suffered water damages on last few pages.

フレッド・アステア (Fred Astaire) の、例の有名な「The Astaire Story」で、もともとは 1952年12月に Mercury レーベルからリリースされたものです。オリジナルは限定盤としてのリリースで、布張りカバーのバインダーにはセッション中の写真や David Stone Martin によるイラスト (カラーが 1枚、白黒が 6枚) 収められ、レコード自体は青盤となっています。全部で 1384 セットしか作られなかったそうで (アルバム内にその旨記載があります)、私が以前持っていた方 (約3年前に入手) は 1158番でした。しかし残念なことにコンディションがあまり良くなく、DSM の白黒ポートレイト6枚が欠けていましたし、ウォーターダメージの為に最後の数ページがやや傷んでいました。

But the newly acquired copy, numbered 491, is in very beautiful condition without any major flaws. All DSM drawings are complete, and four blue vinyls are in perfect condition. It costed more than I bought my previous copy, so just after I had a chance to acquire this 491st copy, I had to take my old copy (as well as other dozens of LPs from my collection) and rush to the vinyl shop to sell 🙁

今回入手出来たものは 491番でしたが、非常に良好なコンディションで、アルバム本体に特に目立つ痛みもなく、盤質も非常に良好、DSM のポートレイトも全て付属しています。さすがに前回入手した 1158番よりお値段が張りましたので、この 491番の入手が決まった直後に、1158番の方、及びうちのコレクションから何十枚か選出して、急いで中古レコード屋に売りに行きました (涙)

And here is an article by Leonard Feather found on January 28, 1953 issue of Down Beat magazine which I obtained years ago (Astaire also on the magazine’s cover). It’s a really interesting article about many “behind the scene” stories of this gorgeous album (how Norman Granz got this idea to create this album, how Granz met Astaire, how the recording session went like etc.). Feather also reports that the deluxe edition costs $50, while four 12-inch LPs are available separately at $5.95 apeace (as Mercury MG C-1001 #1, MG C-1002 #2, MG C-1003 #3 and MG C-1004 #4).

こちらは数年前に入手したものですが、Down Beat の 1953年 1月28日号に掲載された、Leonard Feather による記事です (この号では表紙にも Astaire のポートレートが使われています)。 この記事は非常に興味深く、Norman Granz がこのアルバム製作のアイデアを得るまで、Astaire とコンタクトを取った経緯、レコーディングセッションの模様、などについて書かれています。また、この豪華限定版アルバムが 50ドルで販売されていること、また 4枚の独立した LP (それぞれ 5.95 ドル) としてもリリースされていること (順に Mercury MG C-1001 #1, MG C-1002 #2, MG C-1003 #3, MG C-1004 #4) についても触れられています。

By the way, this issue also features “The Astaire Story” album in the “Down Beat Record Review” section – where the album received five stars.
