その筋 (?) のファンには有名なジャズシンガー セルマ・グレーセン (Thelma Gracen) と、泣く子も黙る偉大なロック/ポップアーティスト ポール・マッカートニー (Paul McCartney)。この二人を結ぶ意外な繋がりについてご存知でしょうか?

Thelma Gracen (a very obscure female Jazz vocalist) and Paul McCartney (needless to say the biggest icon in the Rock/Pops history) – do you happen to know the surprising link between these two artists?

2000年に発行された「Paul McCartney: I Saw Him Standing There」という書籍があります。この本はコンサート・バックステージ・レコーディング風景・プライヴェートなど、1976年から1999年までのポールの貴重な写真が満載されたものなのですが、この本の作者にしてプロの写真家が ジョリー・グレーセン (Jorie B. Gracen)、セルマ・グレーセンの 姪 にあたるその人なのです。

There is a famous photo book entitled “Paul McCartney: I Saw Him Standing There” – which consists of very scarce on-off stage photographs of Paul from the stages, back stages, recording studios to private parties. The author of this book, a professional photographer, is named Jorie B. Gracen, who is Thelma Gracen’s niece.

あっちのサイト にセルマ・グレーセンの LP を 掲載 していたところ、2年ほど前にジョリーさんから「私の叔母の CD はどこで手に入るのか教えて欲しい」と (笑) メールを頂きました。その際、プライヴェートのセルマの話をいろいろ聞かせて頂く機会がありました。また、 (恐らくバンドシンガー時代のものと思われる) セルマの貴重な写真を提供して頂きました。その写真は こちら でご覧になれます。

About two years ago, Jorie-san contacted me via e-mail about Thelma Gracen’s LP. Jorie-san asked me how to obtain her aunt’s album on CD 🙂 I asked her several questions on Thelma, and Jorie-san kindly replied with some interesting stories on Thelma, especially her private life. Also, Jorie-san provided me a very obscure photograph of her aunt (probably taken when Thelma was a singer of a certain big band). You can find the photo of Thelma Gracen here.

さて、今回はポールの話ではなくてセルマ・グレーセンのお話です。彼女が残した録音というのは非常に少なく、1956年にウィングレーベルから出た 唯一のリーダーアルバム (1年後にエマーシーから 再発 されました) だけが有名ですが、ほぼ同時期に録音された フレディ・スラックのアルバム にゲストヴォーカリストとして参加しているのを除くと、めぼしいものは シェップ・フィールズ楽団 (Shep Fields Orchestra) 時代の SP だかトランスクリプションくらいしかないようです。

Thelma Gracen had left few recordings in her entire career. Her most famous recording is, definitely, her only leader album on Wing label (one year later reissued from EmArcy label). Thelma also appears on Freddie Slack’s album (recorded in similar period) as a guest vocalist. But there is few left – she appeared on some 78rpms (or 16-inch transcriptions) by Shep Fields’ Orchestra as a band singer.

ところが先日、こんなシングル盤を発見してしまったのです。

However the other day, I came across an interesting 45rpm single like this:

この Ditto という超マイナーレーベルは、ハンク・ウィリアムス (Hank Williams) やハンク・スノウ (Hank Snow) のマネージャーも一時期つとめたことのある ノーム・ライリー (Norm Riley) という人が 1957年頃にハリウッドで立ち上げたんだそうですが、実はこのレーベル、ロカビリーコレクターの間では非常に有名らしく、カナダ出身の Bob and Lucille (のちの The Canadian Sweethearts) という男女デュオグループの必殺シングル「Eeny-Meeny Miney Moe (Ditto DT-121-45)」で知られているそうです。この曲、ライノレーベルの web で 試聴 してみましたが、確かにマニアが血眼になってオリジナルシングル盤を探したくなるのが分かる程、かっちょいいゴキゲンなナンバーです。へたすると $100 オーバーで取引されているとか。ひえぇぇ。

This super-minor label, Ditto, was started in 1957 by Norm Riley who had briefly managed Hank Williams and Hank Snow. I didn’t know anything about this label, but I found that this label has been very famous among hardcore Rockabilly collectors. The reason is a single release from the Ditto label – “Eeny-Meeny-Miney-Moe” (Ditto DT-121-45) by Bob and Lucille (later became The Canadian Sweethearts). I listened to the short portion of the track at Rhino.com, and I agree that this tune is a killer Rockabilly! Now I understand why hardcore Rockabilly collectors desparately looks for the original 45rpm issue even though it sometomes costs over 100 bucks – wow!

ちょっと脱線してしまいました。話をセルマ・グレーセンに戻しましょう。このシングルを吹き込んだセルマ・グレーセンと、ジャズヴォーカルファンの間で有名なセルマ・グレーセンは 同一人物なのでしょうか？

Well, I’m going too far. Let’s go back to Thelma Gracen – is this Thelma Gracen (on the Ditto 45rpm) and that Thelma Gracen (who is very famous among Jazz vocal fans) the same singer ?

この Ditto レーベルから出たシングルのリリースは 1957年頃のようです (ウィングレーベルのアルバム録音は 1955年)。またこのレーベルはハリウッドで活動しており、ジョリーさんによると 1950年代当時セルマ・グレーセンはビヴァリーヒルズに住んでいたそうです。名前も非常に珍しいですから、同一人物とみて間違いないでしょう。

It seems that this single 45rpm from Ditto label was released back in 1957 (Thelma’s LP album on Wing label was recorded back in 1955). Also, according to Jorie-san, Thelma Gracen lived in Beverly Hills around that time, while this Ditto label was rooted in Hollywood. The name “Thelma Gracen” is very scarce and unique – all these things make me think this Thelma and that Thelma is the same person.

もちろん声質はほぼ同じですし、歌は見事にうまいです。ただ、ウィングのアルバムに比べると、やや低い音域を多用している印象がありますし、ヴィブラートのかけかたなどがサラ・ヴォーン (Sarah Vaughan) を彷彿とさせる歌い方なのが意外です。残念ながら、曲そのものは全くジャジーではなく、バックコーラスなども絡みながら朗々と歌い上げる、当時の典型的なバラッドとなっています。そういう意味ではジャズファンの琴線にふれることは全くなさそうな本シングル盤ではありますが (笑)、あのセルマ・グレーセンの (恐らく) 最後の録音ということで、貴重な資料とはいえそうです。

The singing voice on this 45rpm is (of course) very talented, and very similar to what we can hear on Thelma’s album from Wing label. However, I find a few differences – Thelma tends to sing on lower notes than she does on Wing LP, and surprisingly her use of (a bit) excessive vibrato on this 45rpm is even reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan. Unfortunately, the songs themselves on both sides are not jazzy at all, but typical ’50s popular ballads with backing chorus. However, we can say that this 45rpm is still an important source which (probably) was the very last recording by that fascinating Jazz singer, Thelma Gracen.
