Jazz As I Feel It / Earl Bostic

It’s been so cold these days – to get over such a chilled weather, have a dinner of hot pot food (“nabe ryouri” in Japanese – we Japanese love eating “nabe” dinner in the winter season), drinking shochu (Japanese distilled spirits) mixed with hot water … Hey, hey! Please do not play a joke on me, even if you know I drink mixed shochu with hot water every night (except in the hot summer) !

Same applies to listening to the music – let’s enjoy damn hot music in such a cold season!

Jazz As I Feel It / Earl Bostic
(King 846)

Unfortunately, Earl Bostic has been one of the most underappreciated musicians by most Jazz fans. Actually in his golden age, he seldomly recorded so-called “Pure Jazz” performances – instead, both on live-in-person performances and on the wax, he always played simple and popular R&B and Jump Blues in very earthy way, and many black listeners got excited at his performances. However, if you haven’t heard Earl Bostic yet, I sincerely recommend you to listen to his alto saxophone. He is, in a true way, The Master of the instrument at the time – he has unbelievable ability to perfectly control playing the instrument, even when he’s playing very freaky tones, even when he’s honking funky and earthy growls, or even when he’s playing dirty and nasty ballads. Yes, he was The Master. And because of this, his own bands became important training grounds for up-and-coming jazzmen like John Coltrane, Blue Mitchell, Stanley Turrentine, Benny Golson, Jaki Byard et al (of course there might be several other reasons they joined Earl’s bands).

So, if you are a Jazz fan and don’t have rejection reactions against “earthy” Jazz accompanied with Hammond organ, I really reommend this LP. This would be his best album among his late career (Earl Bostic unfortunately suffered a heart attack in the late 1950s, and he returned to play in 1959. Since then, his performance gradually moved from old R&B style to Soul Jazz). Richard “Groove” Holmes and Joe Pass (both were star players of World Pacific label at the time) do the great amount of steady support. Especially, magical backing of Richard Holmes (on Hammond organ) is fantastic, which shows perfect chemistry with Earl Bostic’s wonderful alto sax. Also, Earl Bostic’s improvisations are all great – if only I could listen to more of his Jazzy performance! Another interesting thing would be the appearance of Shelly Manne (on A-2, A-3, B-2 and B-3) – his unique timbre of hi-hat cymbals and singing rhythms can be heard on all four tracks, and (against my expectations) his drums match rather well on such earthy Soul Jazz. The co-arranger (and the songwriter of A-2, A-4 and B-1) Buddy Collette‘s name can also be seen.

The only regret is, that this album is rather hard to find. As far as I know, it has never been reissued both in LP/CD formats (if you ever know the fact whether it was already reissued, please let me know).

1946年の中頃に録音された「That’s The Groovy Thing」。
    最初は「That’s The Groovy Thing/Tippin’In」(Gotham 104)のカップリングで発売しました。
    その後、ヒットに気を良くしたのか、「That’s The Groovy Thing-Part A/That’s The Groovy Thing-Part B」(Gotham 111)としても発売しました。
    メンバーは Leamon Boler(tp) Earl Bostic(as) Tony Scott(cl) John Hardee(ts) Jimmy Shirley(g) George Parker(p) Jimmie Jones(b) Ed Nicholson(ds)です。

  4. mhatta

  5. Shaolin
