Super Session / Bloomfield – Kooper – Stills

There are dearly beloved albums which I listened to so many times when I was still young – after long years I sometimes have a chance to listen to such albums again. Some LPs give me yet another fascinations I did not notice a long ago, while some others will not show me magical charms anymore. Unfortunately, this album (of which I found and bought the original pressing with 1A matrix on both sides) belongs to the latter case – it’s what happens anyhow.

Super Session / Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Steven Stills
(Columbia CS-9701)

This album, as most of us may know, is a Blues-Rock super session left in the period when the Rock music played the most important musical category among all Popular music scene. In such a decade, people should have special respects to such Blues-Rock music as this album – others include Bluesbreakers (featuring Eric Clapton), Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Freetwood Mac (featuring Peter Green), Blind Faith (a representative of “Super Group” boom), etc. It was a movement when non-black musicans (especially in England) had naive respect to Blues music (American black musicians created), and when audiences showed sympathy for musicians.

It was 1990 when I firstly listened to this album. At that time, I alredy know how this album had been appreciated and highly acclaimed in what kind of perspective. And I enjoyed listening to this album like “… hmmm, I see, this is what is called Super Session by the super group as many people told …”. However, since such naive years, I enjoyed listening to many more kinds of music in various genres, and Rock music became less important to me than before. And now I am listening to this album again – I am surprised at myself that I have less fascination on this album (sorry for you fans!)

So (?), for example on Side-A, now I prefer the soulful arrangements and Kooper’s performance on A-3 “Man’s Temptation” rather than Bloomfield’s very bluesy guitar improvisations on A-1 “Albert’s Shuffle”. Also on B-2 “Season Of The Witch”, now I prefer horn arrangements rather than Stills’ cool guitar cuttings. I even have self-hatred feeling when I find myself not enjoying this album docilely… Anyway, I still really enjoy the album all the way through 🙂

A-1: Albert’s Shuffle (Kooper – Bloomfield)
A-2: Stop (Ragavoy – Shuman)
A-3: Man’s Temptation (Mayfield)
A-4: His Holy Modal Majesty (Kooper – Bloomfield)
A-5: Really (Kooper – Bloomfield)

B-1: It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (Dylan)
B-2: Season Of The Witch (Donovan)
B-3: You Don’t Love Me (Willie Cobb)
B-4: Harvey’s Tune (Harvey Brooks)

    Hungry Chuck、
