一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago I was near Kichijoji station on an errand, and dropped into a large CD chain store I seldom visit. I was lucky enough to find a basket of CDs marked 50% off, so I picked up several — this is one of them (or rather, one box).

みなさんが Vee-Jay (ヴィー・ジェイ) レーベルと聞いて思い出されるのはどんなアーティストでしょうか。ロックファンならば、The Beatles (ビートルズ) のアメリカにおける最初の LP を思い浮かべられるでしょうし、ジャズファンだったら Lee Morgan (リー・モーガン) や Wynton Kelly (ウィントン・ケリー)、Wayne Shorter (ウェイン・ショーター) のリーダー作などが思いつくかもしれません。

Which artist(s) come to mind when you hear the label name Vee-Jay? If you are a rock fan, The Beatles probably come first, since this famous band released their first US LP on the Vee-Jay label; if you are a jazz fan, fine leader albums by Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly or Wayne Shorter may come to mind.

しかし、1953年に Vivian Carter (ヴィヴィアン・カーター) と James C. Bracken (ジェームス・ブラッケン) という黒人夫妻によってシカゴで興された Vee Jay レーベル (この二人のファーストネームからレーベル名がとられています) の本領といえば、やはりブルースであり、R&B であり、ドゥーワップであり、ゴスペルであり、ソウルであることは間違いありません。

However, the heart and soul of the Vee Jay label — founded in Chicago in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken, a Black couple who married that December (the label name was taken from their first initials) — was undoubtedly Blues, R&B, Doo-Wop, Gospel and Soul.

3枚組 CD ボックスは、Vee-Jay の初リリースにして初ヒット (ビルボード R&B チャート最高10位) となる The Spaniels (スパニエルズ) の「Baby, It’s You (Disc 1 Track 1)」で始まります。Vee-Jay の幸先よいスタートを祝うかの様な黒いスローバラードで絶品。続く「Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite (Disc 1 Track 3)」も更に大ヒット (ビルボード R&B チャート最高 5位) となり、初期の稼ぎ頭となります。絶妙なコーラスが絡むスウィートなバラードが絶品ですが、軽快なテンポのジャンプナンバーも捨てがたい魅力があります。本 CD では 1958年録音の「Stormy Weather (Disc 2 Track 6)」が収録されています。

This 3CD box set opens with “Baby, It’s You” (Disc 1 Track 1) by The Spaniels. This single — a sweet, black-chorus slow ballad — was the very first Vee-Jay release and went on to hit #10 on the Billboard R&B chart, a fine omen for the new label. Their follow-up “Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite” (Disc 1 Track 3) became an even bigger hit, reaching #5 on the Billboard R&B chart, and established the group as one of the label’s early breadwinners. The Spaniels are best known for their sweet, dreamy chorus work on ballads, but their up-tempo, swinging numbers are just as irresistible — the 1958 recording of “Stormy Weather” (Disc 2 Track 6) on this set is a fine example.

その他、黒い R&B コーラスグループ / ドゥーワップ系 として、The El Dorados (エル・ドラドス)、The 5 Echoes (ファイブ・エコーズ)、The Kool Gents (クール・ジェンツ)、The Magnificents (マグニフィセンツ)、The Delegates (デリゲイツ)、更にドゥー・ワップ先駆者の Sonny Til & The Orioles (ソニー・ティル・アンド・ザ・オリオールズ) といったゴキゲンな収録が続きます。そして The Dells (デルズ) の初期の名作「Oh What A Nite (Disc 1 Track 17)」もバッチリ収録されています。

Other black R&B chorus and Doo-Wop groups on this box set include such fabulous names as The El Dorados, The 5 Echoes, The Kool Gents, The Magnificents, The Delegates, and one of the pioneering Doo-Wop groups Sonny Til & The Orioles — all fascinating to listen to. And of course, The Dells‘ early hit and early masterpiece “Oh What A Nite” (Disc 1 Track 17) is here too.

Vee-Jay 初期を華々しく飾るもう一つのジャンルは ブルース系 です。Spaniels 同様、レーベル開始直後から契約していた Jimmy Reed (ジミー・リード) を初めとして、Billy Emerson (ビリー・エマーソン)、Eddie Taylor (エディ・テイラー)、John Lee Hooker (ジョン・リー・フッカー)、Pee Wee Crayton (ピーウィー・クレイトン)、Billy Boy Arnold (ビリー・ボーイ・アーノルド)、J.B. Lenoir (J.B. ルノアー) そして Elmore James (エルモア・ジェームス) といったラインアップです。この辺りを聴くと、ローリングストーンズやアニマルズといったイギリスのバンドが、Vee Jay のブルース系作品に相当影響を受けていたことが伺えます。そういえば Gene Allison （ジーン・アリスン) の「You Can Make It If You Try (Disc 2 Track 2)」 (ビルボード R&B チャート最高 3位) や Jimmy Reed の「Honest I Do (Disc 1 Track 25)」も、ストーンズが 1st アルバムでカヴァーしてましたね。同じく Jimmy Reed の「Bright Lights, Big City (Disc 3 Track 5)」は Van Morrison (ヴァン・モリスン) 在籍時の Them のバージョンが有名でしょうか。また、Billy Boy Arnold の「Rockin’ Itis (Disc 2 Track 4)」なんて、もろヤードバーズっぽいですしね (逆ですが)。

Another genre central to early Vee-Jay was, of course, Blues — the earliest example being “High & Lonesome” (Disc 1 Track 2) by Jimmy Reed, one of the label’s first signings. Others include Billy Emerson, Eddie Taylor, John Lee Hooker, Pee Wee Crayton, Billy Boy Arnold, J.B. Lenoir, and the legendary Elmore James. Listening through these Blues tracks, it becomes clear that British R&B bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Animals were heavily influenced by Vee-Jay’s Blues artists. In fact, the Stones covered “You Can Make It If You Try” (Disc 2 Track 2) by Gene Allison (Billboard R&B #3) and “Honest I Do” (Disc 1 Track 25) by Jimmy Reed on their first UK album. Another Jimmy Reed tune, “Bright Lights, Big City” (Disc 3 Track 5), is probably better known in the Them version featuring Van Morrison. And the arrangement and feel of “Rockin’ Itis” (Disc 2 Track 4) by Billy Boy Arnold sound very Yardbirds-like — or rather, the Yardbirds sound very Billy Boy Arnold-like.

それにしてもさすが、ジョン・リー、ジミー、そしてエルモアはどの時代の録音も素晴らしい存在感を示しています。前者の「Boogie Chillun (Disc 2 Track 13)」、まんなかの「Bright Lights, Big City (Disc 3 Track 5)」、後者の「It Hurts Me Too (Disc 2 Track 3)」といったら!!

Above all, one strong impression stands out: John Lee, Jimmy and Elmore each carry an unmistakable, powerful originality throughout their careers — just listen to “Boogie Chillun” (Disc 2 Track 13), “Bright Lights, Big City” (Disc 3 Track 5) and “It Hurts Me Too” (Disc 2 Track 3) on this box set!!

そして 1950年代末から 1960年代にかけて、徐々に芽生える ソウル系 R&B でも、Vee-Jay は充実しています。まずはゴスペルの様に荘厳で崇高な雰囲気すら漂わせる「For Your Precious Love (Disc 2 Track 7)」は、Jerry Butler (ジェリー・バトラー) 在籍時の The Impressions (インプレッションズ) の代表曲。「Here I Stand (Disc 2 Track 11)」は Wade Flemons (ウェイド・フレモンズ) の軽やかなナンバー。軽快なボーディドリービートに乗せてのびやかに歌う Dee Clark (ディー・クラーク) の「Hey Little Girl (Disc 2 Track 16)」やイントロの雷と雨の音がいい感じの「Raindrops (Disc 3 Track 3)」もイイ。あの Gradys Knight & The Pips (グラディス・ナイト・アンド・ザ・ピップス) の初期ヒットナンバー「Every Beat Of My Heart (Disc 3 Track 4)」も興味深いですが、後年に比べるとまだ個性は確立されてないような。

Moving into the Soul-flavoured R&B that gradually took shape from the late 1950s into the 1960s, Vee-Jay’s catalogue is every bit as rich. “For Your Precious Love” (Disc 2 Track 7), with its solemn, almost gospel-like atmosphere, is a signature track by The Impressions from the days when Jerry Butler was still a member. “Here I Stand” (Disc 2 Track 11) is a light, graceful number by Wade Flemons. Also lovely: Dee Clark singing easy and free over a bouncy Bo Diddley beat on “Hey Little Girl” (Disc 2 Track 16), and “Raindrops” (Disc 3 Track 3) with its nicely atmospheric thunder-and-rain intro. The early hit “Every Beat Of My Heart” (Disc 3 Track 4) by The Pips with Gradys Knight (credited as such on the original Vee-Jay label) is also intriguing, though their distinctive personality doesn’t feel quite fully formed yet compared to their later work.

インプレッションズから独立してソロとなった Jerry Butler (ジェリー・バトラー) はこの Vee-Jay 時代が充実しています。Curtis Mayfield (カーティス・メイフィールド) がセカンドヴォーカルで絡む (ですよね?) 「He Will Break Your Heart (Disc 2 Track 23)」は、もろカーティス風のゴキゲンなシカゴサウンド、「Moon River (Disc 3 Track 6)」やバカラック作の大名曲「Make It Easy On Yourself (Disc 3 Track 11)」での荘厳なまでのバリトンヴォイスは素晴らしい。個人的にジェリー・バトラー大好きなもんで . . . 後者は日本では The Walker Brothers (ウォーカー・ブラザーズ) バージョンで有名だと思いますが、このバトラーバージョンがオリジナルです。

After going solo from The Impressions, Jerry Butler had a particularly rich run at Vee-Jay. “He Will Break Your Heart” (Disc 2 Track 23), with Curtis Mayfield sitting in on backing vocals (that is him, isn’t it?), is a delicious slice of classic Chicago sound in pure Curtis style; and his solemn, near-sacred baritone on “Moon River” (Disc 3 Track 6) and on Bacharach’s masterpiece “Make It Easy On Yourself” (Disc 3 Track 11) is simply superb. (I happen to be a big Jerry Butler fan, so . . .) In Japan the latter is better known in The Walker Brothers version, but Butler’s is the original.

そして Gene Chandler (ジーン・チャンドラー) は「Duke Of Earl (Disc 3 Track 7)」で決まり。もちろん、Vee-Jay を離れてからの彼が一番素晴らしいのはいうまでもありませんが、この曲はヒットするべくしてヒットしたという感じでしょう。これの Pearlettes (パーレッツ) によるアンサーソング「Duchess Of Earl (Disc 3 Track 9)」も面白い。しかしこのパーレッツのリードヴォーカル、声質がほんとジャニス・ジョプリンに似てるなぁ。バンド名も「Pearl-ettes」ですしね (笑) 関係ないとは思いますが。

As for Gene Chandler, it has to be “Duke Of Earl” (Disc 3 Track 7) — no question. His truly great work came, of course, after he left Vee-Jay, but this one really does feel like a hit that was simply destined to be. The Pearlettes‘ answer song “Duchess Of Earl” (Disc 3 Track 9) is a fun listen too. By the way, the lead vocalist of the Pearlettes has a voice that really does resemble Janis Joplin’s — and even the group name is “Pearl-ettes” 🙂 Probably just a coincidence, though.

Betty Everett (ベティ・エヴェレット) の「You’re No Good (Disc 3 Track 14)」や「The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss) (Disc 3 Track 15)」は、ブリティッシュビートバンドによくコピーされたのでお馴染みですね。こちらもよく出来たヒットチューンで素晴らしい。その他、一時期ゴスペルに行っていた Little Richard (リトル・リチャード) の R&B 復帰後のシングルとか、The Dells (デルズ) の カデット時代 とは別アレンジの「Stay In My Corner (Disc 3 Track 22)」初期バージョンとか、興味深いです。

Betty Everett‘s “You’re No Good” (Disc 3 Track 14) and “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss)” (Disc 3 Track 15) will be familiar from the many British beat-band covers. Both are beautifully crafted hits — wonderful stuff. Also worth noting: singles by Little Richard after his R&B return (he had spent some time away in gospel), and an earlier version of “Stay In My Corner” (Disc 3 Track 22) by The Dells, arranged differently from their Cadet-era recording. All fascinating listens.

資金繰りの問題から Vee-Jay は 1966年に倒産してしまったわけですが、13年もの期間に渡って、シカゴから全米に良質の黒人音楽を送り続けたその功績はもっともっと評価されてしかるべきでしょう。

Cash-flow problems forced Vee-Jay into bankruptcy in 1966, but the label’s achievement — sending quality Black music out from Chicago across America for thirteen years — deserves far more recognition than it has received.

75曲入りのこの CD ボックスは、45回転復刻シングルが付属しているとはいえ、基本的にはヒットシングル集という感じで、マニア向けというわけではありません。それでも、Vee-Jay の王道ジャンルをまずまず網羅している好編集盤といえます。マスタリングはイマイチな感じですが . . .

This 75-track box set, even with its bonus 45rpm reissue single, is essentially a hit-singles compilation rather than something aimed at hardcore collectors. Still, it is a fine anthology that covers Vee-Jay’s core genres reasonably well. The mastering is only so-so, though . . .

さすがに定価は今となっては高すぎると思いますが、半額セールで買えたわけで、お得でした (笑) というか、この CD ボックス、リリースは 1993年ですので、もう廃盤になっているんじゃないでしょうか。デラックスエディションみたいなミニパッケージで再発されるといいのですが。

The list price feels rather steep by today’s standards, but since I picked it up at half off it was a genuine bargain 🙂 Come to think of it, this set was released back in 1993, so it’s most likely out of print by now. A reissue in some kind of deluxe-edition mini-package would be very welcome.

24ページにも及ぶブックレットの詳細なヒストリーは読み応えがあります。このヒストリー、修正版というか、完全版というか、のちに明らかになったデータや貴重な資料なども付け加えられて、有名な Both Sides Now Discography で「The Vee Jay Story」としてどーんと公開されており、すべての音楽ファン必見です。

The 24-page booklet contains a detailed label history that is genuinely worth reading. A revised and expanded version of that same history — incorporating data and rare materials that surfaced later — has been published in full on the well-known Both Sides Now Discography site as The Vee-Jay Story, and is essential reading for every music fan.
