I don’t remember exactly when I got to know of (and when I got interested in) these Gastr del Sol albums – maybe somewhere on the web, in the early 2000s? Anyway just after I gave it a listen to the first few minutes of the CD album “Upgrade & Afterlife ”, I soon was fascinated with the sound – that could be described as the beauty of dissonance or reposeful noise.

ガスター・デル・ソル (Gastr del Sol) のアルバム、いつその存在に初めて気付いたのか、いつ興味を持ち出したのか、どういうわけか正確に覚えていません。多分2000年代の始め頃、web かどこかで知ったのでしょうか。ともあれ CD を入手、「Upgrade & Afterlife 」の最初の数分を聴いただけで、あっという間にその音の虜になってしまいました。「美しい不協和音」というべきか、「心地よいノイズ」というべきか。緊張感を伴って仔細まで聴き入ってしまうのに、爽やかさと安堵感も伴うという、不思議な音源。

“Upgrade & Afterlife ” and a sequel “Camoufleur ” soon became two of my best favorite albums, although I knew almost nothing about the band and the members, David Grubbs and Jim O’Rourke.

そういうわけで、バンド Gastr del Sol についても、そのメンバー デイヴィッド・グラブス (David Grubbs) や ジム・オルーク (Jim O’Rourke) についてほとんど何も知らない時でしたが、「Upgrade & Afterlife」とその続編「Camoufleur 」の2枚のアルバムは、あっという間に私の愛聴盤となりました。

The other day, finally, I bought vinyl edition of these two great albums, just to fully appreciate the marvelous soundscape in better fidelity (please note, I don’t have much dedicated CD/digital playback environment now – and I don’t mean vinyl LPs are always sounding much better than CDs).

先日、ついに、その両作品の LP を入手しました。この内容的に素晴らしいアルバムを、アナログ盤で聴いたらもっと凄いことになるんちゃうやろうか、と思って。。。（もちろん、CD より LP の方が常に優れているなんて言うつもりはありません。私の家には、気合いの入った CD / ディジタル再生環境が「今のところ」ない、ということです。）

“Camoufleur” is a regular 33 1/3 rpm LP album, while “Upgrade & Afterlife” is a gatefold 2LP edition (one 45 rpm LP and the other 33 1/3 rpm LP). Label is simple enough, no title, no artist name – just plain black labels, except rpms (“33.3” or “45”) and sides (in red dots) on it.

「カモフルーア」は通常の 33 1/3 回転 LP で、「アップグレード・アンド・アフターライフ」は見開きジャケの2枚組、1枚目が 45回転、2枚目が 33 1/3 回転という変則的な構成です。レーベルは共にシンプル極まりないもので、どこにもクレジット的なものは印刷されておらず、回転数（「33.3」か「45」）と、面番号を示す赤い点があるのみです。

The result was – wow. Simply amazing and spine-chilling. Should be played louder. Sounds from the vinyl edition simpley made me love these albums more and more. Timeless masterpieces.

そして、その音は、もうただただ恐ろしく素晴らしいものでした。もっと大音量で聴きたくなります。文字通り時代を超えた大傑作の、この二枚のアルバムの凄さを更に感じさせられました。

No explicit themes, no self-assertive progressions, no boring repetition of the same beat (like what is heard on some Hip-Hop / Electronic artists). Instead, these albums are insanely thrilling to listen to – detailed ambience, dissonance and noise, with clear “on microphone” fidelity and beautiful stereo soundscape.

説教じみたテーマや自己中な展開もありません。一部のヒップホップやエレクトロニカで聴かれるような、なんのストーリーもないミニマル的なビートの反復もありません。ここにあるのは恐ろしくスリリングな音だけです。オンマイクで収録された美しく広がるステレオフォニックな音像の中に、不協和音とギターノイズが絡み合う、つとめて音響的な音です。

You can listen to samples of Gastr del Sol’s albums on the Drag City website – interestingly enough, the website says CDs are already out of print while vinyl LP editions are still available. I would like to buy yet another album featuring Jim O’Rourke “Crookt, Crakt, Or Fly ” in vinyl LP format as well in the near future.

ガスター・デル・ソルのアルバムの楽曲は、Drag City レーベルの web サイト 上で試聴できます。面白い事に、彼らのアルバムのほとんどは、CD が既に売り切れで、LP は未だに新品で入手可能だそうです。ジム・オルーク時代のもう一枚のアルバム「Crookt, Crackt, Or Fly 」も近々LPで入手したいと思います。
