Demo Crazy / Damon Albarn

この 2枚組 LP を購入したのは 1月のことでした。なぜ店頭でこれを買おうと思ったのかはよく覚えていませんが、まあ LP に餓えているということなのでしょう。ともあれ、このユニークなジャケットデザインと、あのデーモンアルバーンのソロアルバムであるという事実に惹かれたのだと思います。

I bought this double LP last January at a local reseller. I don't remember why I picked up the copy - maybe I am just a vinyl junky, but anyway I got attracted by this interesting cover design as well as the fact of that Damon Albarn's solo project.

2003年の US ツアー中に滞在したホテルのベッドで、悪戦苦闘したのか気ままになのか、録音された音楽の断片。このアルバムがその成果ということになりますが、全曲が曲の体をなしていないかの様な断片的なもので、ローファイなリズムボックスの音で満たされています。その一方で、Damon さんの作曲プロセスを伺わせる様な瞬間も垣間見られます。このアルバムを初めて聞いた時、不思議な感覚に襲われました。なんとも不思議な感覚で、まるで Damon さんの心の中を覗き見ているかのような感じ。

During the US tour in 2003, Damon struggled and frankly recorded fine pieces of musical monologue on hotel bedrooms - and this album was a result. All tracks consists of vanity fragments, full of low-fi (or no-fi) rhythm box sounds and moments of tune emerging. However once I listened to the tracks, I felt somewhat comfortable - really strange feeling, like I was peeping Damon's internal mind or something like that.

時代を越えたマスターピースでもなく、素晴らしく絶賛されるアルバムになることもないのでしょうが、ともあれこの盤に刻まれた音楽は私にはとても心地よいものでした。生々しくシャープで、けれどもとっちらかった断片的な集合体。

Although this album may NOT become timeless masterpiece or super-highly acclaimed monuments, I really like this sound on the platters. Raw and sharp sounds, but a set of unsorted fragments.

ところでこのアルバム、5,000セット限定 (ほんまかいな?) で、しかも 10インチ LP でしかリリースされていないとのこと。なぜそうなのかはよく分かりませんが、ともあれ 1枚目の白 LP、2枚目のピクチャー LP という組合せはとても素敵なデザインでした。

By the way, this album is a limited edition of 5,000 copies (really?!), and issued only in 10-inch LP format. I don't know why he decided so. Anyway, both the white vinyl (1st disc) and the picture vinyl (2nd disc) looks so fantastic.
