Shiny Stockings / Barney Kessel

A while ago, I wrote an article of dicrect-cutting LP of Jim Hall recorded in Japan (which was recorded in 1976). And here is another example – Barney Kessel’s direct-cutting LP recorded in 1977. I am wondering, how many direcut-cut LPs were produced in the period (late 1970s) in Japan… You may know, Japanese people tends to do what others are doing; they will not likely to do what others are not doing…

…Anyway, the contents of the LP. This was a trio recording, featuring Kunimitsu Inaba on bass, and Tetsujiro Obara on drums. The trio was formed just after Barney Kessel arrived at Japan, then toured throughout the country, according to the liner-notes. However, they play very good ensemble in great harmony each other on this LP. Both sides consists of three tracks: A-2 and B-2 are by unaccompanied guitar, while others are performed by the trio. By the way, they also left a live recording at “Sometime” Jazz Club, Kichijoji, Tokyo, Japan, and was released in LP format by Trio records at the time. The recordings are currently reissued also in CD format.

Although this LP is direct-cut, the sound itself is not typical sharp, crisp and transparent one. Barney Kessel and the engineering staffs discussed for several hours before the recording, then they decided to record warm and “live” sound, according to the liner-notes. So this LP doesn’t deliver spine-chilling crisp sound, but instead it can reproduce the atmosphere of the artistry of the trio in the studio. Anyway, the music is very fine.

The only regret is that A-3 and B-3 (last track of both sides) are faded-out in the last part, probably because of the limitation of the recording time. Both tracks are very swingy and driving, so if only I could listen to the full version of the performances…
