Update (Mar. 30, 2009) : See also this entry – this live performance has been finally available as officially released DVD in 2008. This article itself was initially made public on Dec. 14, 2006.

Probably I have watched this over a hundred of times, but because of the heavy tension, energy and perfection the film contains, I still have not get bored of watching – instead, every time I watch, I cannot help shed tears of gratitude. I sincerely hope from my heart, that the official release of this video is available as soon as possible . . .

The day was April 5th, 1968 – the day after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Violence erupted in several cities in the US. On this day, James Brown was having a live concert at the Boston Garden, but the mayer Kevin White was anxious about whether the concert leads uprisings in the city, and he once thought of canceling all the public concerts including the JB concert at the Boston Garden.

But his advisors suggested that stopping the concerts would lead uprisings, then the mayer, councilor Thomas Atkins and James Brown met each other. They decided to do the show to keep the city peaceful as well as to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Also they wished TV networks to broadcast the show, but unfortunately all three major TV networks declined to broadcast. But the PBS station WGBH stepped in to deliver the message outside the Garden.

The live concert started with speeches by Thomas Atkins and Kevin White, respectively. Especially the mayer’s speech shows the severe tension on that day, something like this:

“ . . . 24 hours ago, Dr. King died, for all of us, black and white . . . and I’m also here to ask for your help . . . Let us look at each other, here in the gardens, and back at home . . . and pledge no matter what other communities might do, we in Boston will honour Dr. King in peace . . .”

Probably the Garden was filled with so many black people, and the white mayer stands on a stage just one day after Dr. Martin Luther King’s death. We can easily imagine how brave and courageous the mayer showed on the stage, in front of many many audiences.

There are several (underground) sources available which capture the legendary show, but most of them seem to be incorrectly edited back and forth (most of them starts with the song “Get It Together”, which actually was played in the middle of the show). I checked the video several times, and here is a correct order in my opinion:

  • (Councilor Thomas Atkins speaks)
  • (Mayer Kevin White speaks)
  • That’s Life
  • Kansas City
  • Soul Man (by Bobby Byrd)
  • (Bobby and James duets)
  • . . .
  • It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World
  • Lost Someone
  • Bewildered
  • When A Man Loves A Woman
  • Tell Mama (by Marva Whitney)
  • Check Yourself (by Marva Whitney)
  • Chain Of Fools (by Marva Whitney)
  • I Heard It Through The Grapevine (by Marva Whitney)
  • (commedy by Maceo Parker)
  • Get It Together
  • There Was A Time
  • I Got The Feeling
  • Try Me
  • Cold Sweat
  • Maybe The Last Time
  • I Got You (I Feel Good)
  • Please, Please, Please
  • I Can’t Stand Myself
  • (fans rush the stage)
  • I Can’t Stand Myself
  • I Got The Feeling (finale)
  • . . .

“Soul Man”“Man’s Man’s Man’s World” の間にあと 1〜2曲演奏されていたのかも知れません (例えば “You’ve Got To Change Your Mind” なんかを Bobby Byrd とデュエットしてたりして?!)

The part between “Soul Man” and “Man’s Man’s Man’s World” is missing on most of the sources, and I am wondering if one or two more songs were actually performed or not (“You’ve Got To Change Your Mind” by JB and Bobby Byrd duet, for example?). Anyway, this song order may cover over 90 percents of the entire show, I think.

当然ながら、後半の怒涛の長尺ファンクの嵐 (特に “Get It Together”“There Was A Time”“I Got The Feeling”、更に “Try Me” をはさんでの “Cold Sweat” 辺り) は呪術的リズムの洪水でカタルシス満点、鳥肌が立ちまくりです。“ . . . Gimmie Wes Montgomery . . .”

Of course, latter part of the show is amazing and spine-chilling, full of massive funk bombs. One of the highlights is a lengthy stream of “Get It Together”, “There Was A Time”, “I Got The Feeling”, then a short break of “Try Me” and the massive “Cold Sweat” – all featuring JB as a shaman of funk, leading backing members full of polyrhythmic party – what a great performance! JB calls “ . . . Gimmie Wes Montgomery . . . ” then the great funk guitarist Jimmy Nolen plays so bluesy riffs – Clyde Stubblefield creates massive, bold and atomic rhythms on drums – Maceo Parker plays funky tenor sax like he still plays on alto sax. James Brown and his band in late 1960s was such a perfect showcase, evolving every day to the artistic peak. I believe that everybody who watched the show must be impressed and totally shocked at high voltage.

そしてラストの “I Can’t Stand Myself”。

Then, the highlight throughout the entire show – it happened just after JB started singing “I Can’t Stand Myself” – the moment when the tension was building up in the Garden, and the most famous scene. Soon after JB started singing, many audiences excitedly rushed the stage, policemen and the security appeared and reacted to these fans, then the music stopped. JB assured policemen that he was alright and that he could handle the situation by himself. After all, JB appealed to the fans to go down and continue the show. All settled down again and the show continued. This would be the very moment to probe how great JB was a Soul Brother No.1 and the representative among all black people in the garden.

[Dancing In The Street: Make It Funky]

Sly & The Family StoneStevie WonderCurtis MayfieldMarvin GayeEWFKool & The GangHarold Melvin & The Blue NotesO’JaysP-Funk

As far as I know, part of this live concert was officially released only on the BBC documentary “Dancing In The Street: Make It Funky”. This documentary was also broadcasted on the NHK Television in Japan about ten years ago, and I firstly watched the documentary at that time. When I watched the JB scene for the first time, I was completely knocked out and thought this live performance was really spine-chilling. Of course, other parts of this documentary are also all superb, featuring rare films and interviews in the Funk / New Soul / Philly Soul era of such as Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, EWF, Kool & The Gang, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, O’Jays, P-Funk. And the documentary ends with a live stage by Public Enemy, who have strong DNAs from James Brown.

このライブからの映像として “Get It Together”“Cold Sweat”“There Was A Time”“Try Me” などが、一部分だけではありますが非常に鮮明な映像で収録されています。

Later, the enhanced edition of this documentary was released in VHS video format (the above scan is a package of the VHS edition, released in Japan). The documentary contains a part of the legendary stage at the Boston Garden, featuring (excerpts of) “Get It Together”, “, “Cold Sweat”, “There Was A Time” and “Try Me”. This excellent documentary has not been reissued in DVD format yet – I don’t know why. (Update (Mar. 30, 2009) : See also this entry – this live performance has been finally available as officially released DVD in 2008.)
( . . . the rest of the English edition will be available soon . . .)

当時を代表するといってもよい曲 “Say It Loud (I’m Black And I’m Proud)” の最も初期のライブ演奏が聴けるという意味でも貴重です。

    Marva Whitney
