本当はもっと早くに載せたかったのですが、ここを更新する時間的・気分的余裕がなくて、こんなに遅くなってしまいました。それはさておき未見の方には文句なし、「これを観ずして死ねるか」レベルでおすすめです。。。

I wish I could have published this contents earlier, but unfortunately I didn’t have enough spare time to write it – i couldn’t feel relax and think of writing it either. Anyway, this video is definitely recommended for everyone who haven’t watched it yet . . . you should watch this video while you live in this present life.

 

この 3枚組 DVD ボックスの最大の話題はもちろん、 数年前 (JB尊師が他界される数週間前に) 本サイトでも 紹介した ことのある、1968年4月5日ボストンガーデンでの伝説のライブ映像がついに オフィシャルに陽の目を見た ことに尽きるでしょう。

With no doubt, the most important news about this three DVD box set is, that the legendary live performance by the Godfather of Soul (at the Boston Garden, April 5, 1968) has been officially released, finally. A few years ago (just a few weeks before Mr. Brown passed away) I had published an article on this site about this legendary live concert.

そのライブが収録されたディスク2「James Brown Live At The Boston Garden – April 5, 1968」では、 ライブ中盤の Bobby Byrd や Marva Whitney の箇所や、MC によるコメディ部分はカットされているものの、JB 本人歌唱部分はもちろんオープニングの市長らによるスピーチ部分も現存する映像がほぼ完全に収録されています (機器のトラブルかなにかの原因で欠損している部分は、ラジオで同時中継された際の音声テープで補完されています)。さらに、映像として残っている箇所よりも前に行われた JB 本人のスピーチ部分の音声もボーナスコンテンツとして収録されています。このライブが1968年4月5日という文脈でどのような意味を持ったのか、十二分に堪能できる編集だと思います。

Disc 2 “James Brown Live At The Boston Garden – April 5, 1968” contains the performance (and the speech by the mayer Kevin White and the councilor Thomas Atkins) as closely as what was videotaped and was broadcasted that night, except this DVD lacks parts performanced by Bobby Byrd, Marva Whitney, and a commedy by the MC. Missing video fragments were carefully complemented with audio simulcast which was concurrently recorded and broadcasted on radio station. Furthermore, the bonus part of this DVD contains audio fragments of JB’s own speech on stage prior to the live performance. I think this DVD is properly edited to let us know what this live meant, how this live was meaningful on that night of April 5, 1968.

残念ながら、アンダーグランドな (?) 映像に親しまれてきた方には、新たに発掘された映像はありませんが、本作品の価値がそれで損なわれるはずもありません。JB のライブどころか R&B やソウルのライブすら中継したことのなかった WGBH スタッフによる悪戦苦闘の結果、この世に映像が残されているだけでも奇跡なのですし、こうやって正規作品としてリリースされること自体が画期的なのですから。。。

If you are a hardcore JB freak who have watched an underground (?) version of this video hundreds of times, you’ll know this DVD contains no newly-discovered video fragments. However, it doesn’t mean this DVD is a crap, of course – the fact itself is amazing, epoc-making and a miracle that the videotaped material (a true effort by the WGBH staffs who had never shooted an R&B live concert for broadcast before) still exists, and that it has been finally released as an official DVD . . .

3枚目の DVD「James Brown Live At The Apollo」では、ボストンのライブの1ヶ月前、アポロシアターでのコンサートの模様がたっぷり収録された、当時制作された TV ドキュメンタリー「Man To Man」が観られます。マスターテープの保存状態が芳しくなかったらしく、一部画面が乱れたりする部分もありますが、なにより、この時期の JB のライブが カラー映像で オフィシャル作品としてみられることの意味は大きいでしょう。その他、有名な 1964年 T.A.M.I. Show での「Out Of Sight」のパフォーマンス、1966年と1967年のパリ・オリンピア劇場でのライブ映像がボーナスとして収録されています。

Disc 3 “James Brown Live At The Apollo ’68” contains the TV documentary entitled “Man To Man” which features JB’s live performance at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem in March 1968. Unfortunately the condition of the master tape was not the best, but it is so precious to watch JB’s live performance as an officially released DVD, and in full colour. This DVD also contains bonus tracks, featuring the famous “Out Of Sight” performance at the T.A.M.I Show in 1964, as well as two more performances at the L’Olympia, Paris in 1966 and 1967.

そして、個人的には本 DVD ボックス中最も重要だと思うのが 1枚目のドキュメンタリー「The Night James Brown Saved Boston」です。キング牧師暗殺翌日に予定されていたコンサートが無事開催されるまでの舞台裏、そしてこのライブそのものがボストンという街に何をもたらしたのか、何を意味したのか、について丁寧に追った、良質のドキュメンタリーとなっています。そして、これこそが、今回の DVD ボックスセットリリースの最大の狙いであることが理解できます。

And the Disc 1 (which I think the most important piece) of this DVD box set, entitled “The Night James Brown Saved Boston”, contains a well-constructed superb documentary of the Boston Garden live concert – it tells what this live (held on the night after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King) meant and brought to the city of Boston. And we will know why this DVD box has been officially released.

さらに、本 DVD のボーナストラックが余りにも興味深いのです。ドキュメンタリー本編に収録しきれなかった関係者へのインタビューがてんこもりで、もうこれが相当面白い。今まで知らなかった裏話などがこれでもかというくらいに聴けます。英語に自信のある方は、この大量のインタビュー映像でおなかいっぱいになれることでしょう。

Furthermore, bonus tracks of this DVD are extremely interesting to watch – you can hear many minutes of interviews with Charles Bobbit, Jabo Starks, Fred Wesley, Marva Whitney, Dr. Robert Hall, Rev. Al Sharpton, Rickey Vincent and Dr. Carnel West – so interesting to listen to, and they tell so many known stories behind the Bonston live as well as JB himself.

本 DVD にはさらに、このドキュメンタリーの試写会時に行われたパネルディスカッションの模様も収録されています。これがまた興味深い。本ドキュメンタリー制作の張本人である (あの!) デヴィッド・リーフ (David Leaf) が制作動機を語る場面がみものですし、なぜ今回このドキュメンタリーが制作されるに至ったか、1968年のあの重大な瞬間に起きたことの何をこのドキュメンタリーを通じて伝えたいのか、それらが明らかになります。これもぜひご賞味あれ。。。

This DVD also contains another superb bonus – a panel discussion which followed a private screening of the documentary “The Night James Brown Saved Boston”. This panel discussion itself is absolutely interesting to listen to. It’s really intresting to watch the producer/director David Leaf (yes, that David Leaf) tells about why he wanted to make this documentary – it surely tells us why this documentary was made, why it must be made, and what he wanted to deliver through this documentary on that crucial moment of the year 1968. You should take a look!
