Introduction

Please Please Me, the first album by The Beatles. The mono edition (Parlophone PMC-1202) was released on 22 March 1963, and the stereo edition (PCS-3042) followed on 26 April 1963.

The landmark debut album by the four men who, without question, changed the course of rock history. On the collectors’ market, the original first pressing in particular, sometimes called the “Holy Grail of Beatles vinyl”, has not faded in popularity over the decades. If anything, the craze keeps heating up. More than 60 years after the first release, perhaps it is only natural that its value continues to soar.

I have never owned a Gold Parlophone copy of Please Please Me, and even now I cannot say I am actively looking for one 🙂 The current prices are simply too high (although I do wish I had bought one more than 20 years ago, when they were still affordable).

Besides, back in the 1980s I heard this music on the radio-cassette player at home, on a portable radio at the neighbourhood sweet shop, or as background music on TV, and it struck me hard even in such settings. I have also listened to it so many times over the years that I could recite every song from memory. So, not being much of an antique collector, I always end up thinking, “I don’t really need to own one.”

Luckily, I did once have the chance to hear a Gold Parlophone first pressing, at some event about 20 years ago, if I remember correctly. It certainly sounded wonderful, and it was a special experience. But to this day, a first pressing of Please Please Me has never once sat on the turntable in my home.

A Personal History of the Beatles and Me

I had heard the Beatles as background music on TV and in supermarkets without really paying attention, but what first turned me seriously towards them was the shock of hearing “Nowhere Man” come out of the FM radio I had on while studying for exams late one night in October 1984, when I was in my second year of junior high school (eighth grade).

Right after that, I bought my first Beatles record, The Beatles’ Second Album (EAS-80563), chosen for no other reason than “the sleeve has lots of photos on it”. From there I went on to the Japanese albums with the “national flag” obi strip that were on sale at the time, the 1980s US albums (on the purple Capitol label), German and Australian pressings, the “Original Monaural Records” series issued in Japan in 1986 as a limited edition marking the 20th anniversary of the Beatles’ visit to Japan, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s Revolver (MFSL-1-107), and countless bootleg LPs, bought with the help of that legendary thick Japanese paperback, the Beatles bootleg encyclopaedia (Bītoruzu Kaizokuban Jiten). Until I finished high school, I was hooked on the Beatles’ music almost every day.

The encyclopaedia I bought as a high school student is still with me. The LP below is the only Beatles bootleg left in my house.

That said, I began to feel that listening to nothing but the Beatles was slowly wearing away that precious fresh shock, and at one point I even forced myself to listen to them as little as possible. Instead, I started digging into other bands of the Beatles’ era one after another, and my interest moved on to the wide world and history of music from all over the globe: psychedelic and garage rock, modern jazz, soul, funk, shoegaze, contemporary classical music, pre-war jazz, Latin American music, African music, electronica and so on (I wrote about those days some time ago).

There is no doubt that my strong interest in music and my urge to explore it were first nurtured by my encounter with the Beatles’ music. By this time, though, that had turned into a craving for “music I have never heard” and “music I don’t know yet”, and I stopped actively listening to the Beatles. Or rather, their music had been imprinted on me down to the DNA level, so to speak.

It must have been sometime in the 1990s. Until then, most Beatles (and rock in general) enthusiasts had talked in terms of “alternate takes”, “different mixes”, “different covers” and “unreleased songs and takes (on bootlegs and the like)”. Then “matrix numbers” and “first pressings”, the sort of things often debated over jazz and classical LPs, started to come up more and more in the Beatles context too. I remember being rather moved to think, “Ah, so Beatles collectors are shifting in this direction as well” 🙂

It was around then that I stopped buying Record Collectors’ Magazine, the Japanese music magazine I had read so avidly as a place to learn about all kinds of music through recorded media and their history.

Of course, I still listen to the Beatles, and every time a Super Deluxe Edition comes out, I chase down the alternate takes and mixes for dear life. After more than 40 years there are still surprises and new discoveries, and I find that truly amazing.

One Record Among Many

In 1963 the album was already a truly explosive hit in the UK, and the following year the storm would sweep across the whole world. The reason the original first pressing of Please Please Me is so highly prized must be that the passionate popularity of the Beatles, with a few ups and downs along the way, has never faded from 1963 right up to the present day.

For the record company in March and April 1963, though, Please Please Me was just one product among many. Besides the Beatles, there were all sorts of artists working in all sorts of genres. A record that exploded the way Please Please Me did would be put on an emergency production footing, and if the company still could not keep up, pressing would be contracted out to another company. Records like that were turned out and sold as fast as they could be made. Meanwhile, all the other records were quietly recorded, quietly manufactured and quietly shipped to the record shops.

The record company of 1963 did not give Please Please Me any special treatment, pressing it on some specially formulated ultra-high-quality material or dressing it in a deluxe sleeve, out of regard for its musical content or for the historical value it might one day acquire. The album was recorded in the same way, pressed in the same way, packaged in the same way and sent out to the market in the same way as every other release on the Parlophone label at the time. As a product, it was simply the same kind of record.

And that got me thinking.

What were the LPs that Parlophone released around the same time as Please Please Me actually like? What kind of records was Parlophone putting out back then, and where, among all of them, did an album called Please Please Me by the Beatles stand at the time? What did it look like inside a British record shop in those days, with Please Please Me lined up among all the other records? That was how my curiosity suddenly started to grow.

In other words, the questions were “what sort of records sat next to a hugely famous album?” and “how does that era look when seen from the label’s point of view rather than the artist’s?” Come to think of it, this is what I had been doing, without being conscious of it, with the Mercury label for decades.

With an independent jazz label like Blue Note, or a classical series like Mercury Living Presence, the neighbouring catalogue numbers are, naturally, mostly music of the same genre. But in the main (popular) series of a major label such as RCA Victor / Columbia / Capitol, you often find a jumble of very different genres sitting side by side. This gives an indirect view of the varied music that listeners of the day were encountering in real time, and of what kind of music the labels were trying to sell, and I find that fascinating.

And I came to feel that same curiosity about “Parlophone in the early 1960s”, and in particular about “Please Please Me (PMC 1202), the album everybody knows, and its neighbours”.

Finding PMC 1201 and PMC 1203

Unlike the 1980s, when I bought my first Beatles record, these days I can reach that kind of information freely over the internet, without having to rely on magazines, books or radio programmes. That is the nice thing about the present day (though part of me misses the old days, when it all took so much more effort). I can also search for second-hand records online and buy them.

So, taking Please Please Me (PMC 1202), I decided to look for the albums on either side of it in the catalogue, that is, PMC 1201 and PMC 1203, give them a listen, and let my thoughts drift to Britain in 1963 and to the Parlophone label of the time, and that was what set this article in motion.

Well, my reminiscing has gone on too long. The main story starts here. In the next article, “The Neighbours of Please Please Me, Pt. 2: PMC 1201 and PMC 1203“, I look at the two records I actually bought, from the vinyl itself and from their numbers.
