Flat Foot Floogie (with a Floy-Floy)

My six-years-old daughter, whose best favourite tune so far is “That’s A Plenty”, recently found another favourite tune of her own – it’s “Flat Foot Floogie” – maybe I’m not a good daddy to her…

Not sure if it was correct, but I’ve read somewhere on the Internet that the original title of this particular tune was “Flat Feet Floozie (with a Floy-Floy)” (“floozie/floosie”: slang for “an easy female or a street girl”; “floy-floy” slang for a venereal disease…), but the title was changed at the last minute.

Anyway, this funny and entertaining tune (with nonsense lyrics) is of course one of the trademark songs by Slim Gaillard. The original version was recorded on February 17, 1938 by “Slim and Slam”, and initially issued on Vocalion 4021 (78 rpm).

This tune soon became popular among the scene, and many musicians recorded this particular tune one after another – Benny Goodman even recorded this tune and his version became Number One in the chart.

Now that I have to collect many versions of “Flat Foot Floogie” for my daughter (LOL), here’s the summary of the recorded versions (most are what I already have) in chronological order for my own reference. I hope I can find many more good versions soon:

Milt Herth Quartet:

Milt Herth (org), Willie "The Lion" Smith (p, cel),
Teddy Bunn (g, vo), O'Neil Spencer (ds, vo).

  2. Thank you so much for this excellent post! I was looking up some information for my own blog (I write about swing music in Chinese for readers in Taiwan), and found your page most helpful. Keep up the good work 🙂

p.s. I think your daughter demonstrates infallible taste in her preference for That’s A Plenty and Flat Foot Floogie!
