ME-10: Nara Leão

Preceded by my previous post on ME-2 “Balançamba”, let’s jump to the tenth ELENCO LP album (ME-10) by Nara Leão this time (ME-3 will be featured on the next update, I hope). As always, please also refer the ELENCO Discography entry.

This was the very first Brazilian used LP I ever bought – the debut album (1st issue in 1963, original mono) of Nara Leão (1942-1989) left on the ELENCO label.

The outer sleeve is very fragile and weak – front/back covers (printed on a thin paper) are just glued onto a plain paper sleeve. Old UK LPs (and Japanese LPs) sometimes came with very thin outer sleeves, but this Brazilian sleeve is more fragile and weak – we have to handle old Brazilian sleeves with extreme care to keep them from further damages.

… what a dark and blue tone this album is dominated by. Rhythm figures on this album (of course) belongs to Bossa Nova and Samba, and excellent performances by backing musicians (such as Geraldo Vespar’s violão on A-2) as well as appropriate arrangements are really amazing. Actually, the real highlight of this album would be that dark tone (which never be heard on numerous US “Bossa-Nova like” recordings by various artists) and Nara Leão’s budding voice.

At the same time, it’s really interesting that this album consists of light and darkness – blue and dark tones dominate the entire album, while on the other hand the sound is very sharp and solid, and sometimes it even sounds very warm and gentle. The co-existence of these contradictory aspects makes this album so special – among other fine ELENCO LP albums, this Nara’s LP album acquires very unique standpoint with conspicuous fascination.

Recent Japanese CD reissues (including mini LP style CD edition) come with translated lyrics to Japanese, and we see that most of the tracks sing of Brazilian traditional culture, slaves and poverty (if only I could understand Portuguese…). In the early 1960s, Brazil was in very unstable political situation (military junta emerged in 1964), and in the period some Bossa Nova musicians went against Bossa Nova music, seeking a return to its samba roots. On this album, Nara Leão might have a strong influence of Carlos Lyra, and her interest was already shifting beyond Bossa Nova to old samba and protest songs.

A few more thoughts – several tracks are reminiscent of African rhythms and performance – it is very understantable, when we think of the history, ethnicity and race of the country (Wikipedia). Also, most tracks are written in minor keys – such melody/chord progressions strongly appeal to us Japanese, since Japanese popular music also prefer minor keys and we are very familiar with that.

Instrumental performances, arrangements and singing are all great throughout all tracks, but the most moving track (at least for me) definitely is B-1 “Berimbau”. This masterpiece song by Baden Powell is performed in sharp and chilling moods (and at the same time) with melancholic atmosphere – a great performance.
