ジャズギターの重鎮 ジム・ホール の、ほとんど知られていない演奏が収録されたアルバムを入手しました。かなりイイです。

I happened to obtain the album featuring one of the least-known recordings by the Jazz guitar maestro Jim Hall – very interesting one and I love it.

現代音楽の作曲家　マックス・シューベル (1932-2010) 氏が自ら立ち上げた現代音楽・実験音楽向けレコードレーベル「Opus One」。その記念すべきカタログ番号1番のアルバムがこれで、A面が ドナルド・アーブ (1927-2008) の作品集、B面がシューベル自身の作品となっているものです。

“Opus One” is a record label specialized for Contemporary/Experimental Music, established by Max Schubel (1932-2010) who is also a contemporary music composer. And this vinyl record is the first title (number one) from the Opus One label, featuring three compositions by Donald Erb (1927-2008) on Side-A, and a concerto by Schubel himself on the flipside.

ジム・ホールが登場するのはA面3曲目の「String Trio (1966) for violin, violoncello and electric guitar」という作品です。この斬新でスリル満点の楽曲は、そもそもアーブ氏がホール氏のために書き下ろした作品だということです。更にこの二人は長年の友人同士（！）であり、またアーブ氏は音楽活動の最初期に地元のダンスバンドでジャズトランぺッター（！）を務めていたということで、かなり興味深いつながりです。

Jim Hall appears on A-3 “String Trio (1966) for violin, violoncello and electric guitar” – interestingly enough, this refreshing and thrilling composition was originally written especially for Jim Hall, who had been a long-time friend with Donald Erb (!), who initially started his career as a Jazz trumpeter (!) (for a local dance band).

バイオグラフィー的な情報をいろいろ探してみると気付くのですが、両氏ともにオハイオ州で育ち（アーブ氏はオハイオ生まれオハイオ育ち、ホール氏はニューヨークで生まれたあとオハイオに引っ越したようです）、ともに クリーブランド音楽大学 に進学（アーブ氏は大学院）しており、この頃からお互いを良く知り影響しあう中だったということなんでしょうね。

As we look for biographical info on these two, we may find both Mr. Hall and Mr. Erb were raised in Ohio, and both attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, where (I guess) Mr. Hall and Mr. Erb got to know each other, started their friendship and inspired each other.

私は現代音楽マニアではないので（笑）各楽曲についての詳細は控えますが、自分にとっては一日中聴いていても飽きない類いの音楽だったとだけ記しておきます。

As I am not a contemporary/experimental music expert yet, I will leave detailed description on each composition blank (haha), but anyway both sides are kinds of what will not bore me even if played all day.

この録音が行われた1966年といえば、ジム・ホール氏は前年に病気を患い一時療養した時期で、復帰直後にビル・エバンスとの「Intermodulation」（1966年4月）を録音した他スタン・ゲッツやソニー・スティットの録音に参加するなどしているリハビリ期にあたります。1969年の大名盤「It’s Nice To Be With You – Jim Hall In Berlin」で劇的な変貌をとげ、1970年代の大充実期に突入する前で、リーダーアルバムが全く残されていない1960年代中盤のホール氏の変化をひもとく貴重な資料といえるかもしれません。

In the mid-1960s Jim Hall left no leader album – only appeared as a guest musician on a few albums, including “Intermodulation” (recorded in April 1966) with Bill Evans, and a few album with Stan Getz and Sonny Stitt. I’ve heard that Jim had to be hospitalized for some disease in 1965, so the mid-1960s might be like a rehabilitation period for him, before he recorded one of his masterpiece album “It’s Nice To Be With You – Jim Hall In Berlin” in 1969 (then reached his creative peak in the 1970s). So this scarce album can be one of the important pieces to solve the puzzle of “why Jim Hall dramatically changed his sound and artistry on and after 1969?”
