R.I.P., Mr. Billy Preston

As many people already know, the famous organ player Billy Preston passed away on June 6th, at age 59. At least in Japan, so many blogs talks about his passaway, to say Rest In Peace to him and his music ever been created.

It is very interesting on the other hand, that most people mention his name from the Beatles’ standpoint – regarding him as the “5th Beatle”. Unfortunately, even after I know the fact he passed away, I didn’t wish to listen to his famous works of Beatles-related context, such as “Get Back” sessions, or leader albums on Apple label. I don’t even know why I didn’t intend to give them a try.

[The SAR Records Story]

The first track I listened to for a tribute was (unintentionally) “Greazee, Pts. I & II” on double CD with booklet, entitled “Sam Cooke’s SAR Records Story” which I bought in 1995. When I firstly listened to this double CD through (just after I bought the CD set about a decade ago), it blew me away – what an impressive music and sound it has! Especially, all tracks on the CD 1 (Gospel side) are quite impressive and superb.

I & II でした。

“Greazee” (on CD 2, R&B side) is an instrumental track fully featuring Billy Preston’s solid organ work (its sound style is reminiscent of Booker T & The MG’s), and was originally issued on Derby 1002 (45rpm), recorded on March 5, 1963 – when he was only sixteen years old (BTW his debut single was “There’s A Brand New Picture c/w My Kind Of Music” on Contract 5101, released in 1961).

Booker T & The MG’s なお、彼のデビューシングルは更に遡ること 1961年リリースの “There’s A Brand New Picture c/w My Kind Of Music” (Contract 5101) でした。

This instrumental track itself, featuring his impressive organ performance which proves he was already a genius player of only sixteen years old, is not his finest work throughout his entire career, but it is very interesting that Sam Cooke was deeply impressed with Billy’s artistry, and invited Billy to Sam’s new label, SAR and DERBY. In fact, Billy Preston plays on many sessions for SAR and DERBY labels – the CD set “SAR Records Story” features some of such tracks, Billy’s playing organ and piano as a backing musician.

[Sam Cooke's Night Beat]

Billy Preston’s another highlight in the early 1960s would be the appearance of Sam Cooke’s definite masterpiece album “Sam Cooke’s Night Beat” – Billy plays very gospel-oriented organ on “Little Red Rooster” which is so fascinating. Billy’s organ is fully featured on all twelve tracks of this masterpiece album.

I sincerely believe that “Night Beat” is one of the best soulful albums ever made, and Billy Preston’s organ (as well as other celebrated musicians such as Ray Johnson on piano, Hal Blaine on drums etc.) plays a very important role to make this album something special.

The rest of his 1960s’ career (after Sam Cooke’s passaway) is highly acclaimed among musicians and critics – Billy moved to Vee Jay and recorded three 45rpms which made small success (among them, “Billy’s Bag” made a smash hit) – Billy appeared as a keyboard player (in place of Leon Russell) on a famous TV show ”Shindig!” – then he joined to Ray Charles‘s band in 1966-1968, when he also released solo 45rpms on Capitol label. He was a young and talented “musicians’ musician” in the 1960s.

In January of 1969, George Harrison recruited Billy to play organ on the legendary Get Back session, then rapidly his name became famous among Rock & Pops scene, then his solo career in the 1970s was amazing.

His impressive performances with the Beatles (including George Harrison as solo) and the Rolling Stones has been loved by many many Rock fans, and Billy Preston’s funky and groovy solo albums on Apple and A&M sold very well even among the people who don’t like Soul, Funk and R&B very much – just because he had played with the two big groups? Maybe not. Billy’s versatile artistry attracted such Rock fans.

I would be so happy, if such people even give it a listen to Billy’s early works, and if some of them gradually get interested in R&B, Soul and Funk music, to expand his/her musical preferences . . . because “that’s the way God planned it” .
