Songs For Young Lovers / Frank Sinatra

There ain’t no word to say – you know what? What a perfect album this is . . .

(Capitol [US] H-488)

What kind of perfection on this 10-inch LP (which recorded the very start of Frank Sinatra’s golden era), you’d like to know? – Of course, here is the perfect singing by Frank Sinatra himself which is very important on this album – and furthermore, what a perfect composition of the entire album – a series and a construction of the songs – it must have been said that, this is the earliest “concept album” in the worldwide.

A-2 (E flat major ⇒ A flat major)、A-3 (E flat major)、A-4 (A flat major) と統一感のある進行を意図的に演出している A面だけでホレボレ。

A series of keys for example . . . what a perfect stream of key changes – starting from opening number A-1 (B minor / D major), then a consistent series of tracks – A-2 (E flat major ⇒ A flat major), A-3 (E flat major) and A-4 (A flat major). Then the curtain falls and the first act is over. Flipping the disc, then the second act opens with B-1 (D major, the same key with A-1), then B-2 (E flat major), and the last song B-3 (F sharp minor ⇒ D major). But Sinatra comes back and sing the encore B-4 (D major ⇒ E flat major, an impressive key modulation) . . .

Sinatra and Riddle has build a complete stream of songs on this album – ballads and swingy middle tempo – a continuous and consistent stream of lyrics – and key settings. Furthermore, Sinatra sings from the very start of the verse of all songs (except A-1 and A-4), which gives further consistency throughout the album. And of course, Sinatra sings all eight tracks in a perfect way, as if all songs were originally written for him – who says he/she don’t like this album anyway?

“Swing Easy!

If you have a “Swing Easy! – Songs For Young Lovers” album (either in 12-inch LP or CD format), stop playing in the middle of B-4 and B-5 (track 12 and 13 if you have a CD reissue) for a while – you will come to understand the very concept of what Sinatra and Riddle wanted to express on this album.

1st variation, w/ deep groove on label, AES cutting

BTW, this album was released in the early 1954 (recorded in November 1953) – when most Capitol albums were cut by AES equalizing curve. If you play this album on RIAA curve, bass sounds boosted, while it lacks treble. If you have an amplifier which has bass/treble control, reduce the bass and boost the treble, and you’ll get the appropriate sound. Unfortunately, this early 10-inch LP doesn’t sound superb against our expectation – possibly by a certain mastering/cutting problem (or simply due to the bad condition of this copy?) I don’t even know . . .

This copy has D4 stamped matrix on both sides and an “anvil mark” stamp (which stands for Scranton pressing). Another copy I have is D4 on Side-A and D3 on Side-B. Unfortunately the latter copy is in bad condition with many scratch noises – if only I could find the West-Coast pressing copy with D1 or D2 on both sides!
(Addendum (Jul. 11, 2006): recently I could find a D1/D2 promo copy (East-Coast pressing) – take a look)

A-1 (11847-10) : My Funny Valentine
A-2 (12034-2) : The Girl Next Door
A-3 (11846-17) : A Foggy Day
A-4 (11858-3) : Like Someone In Love

B-1 (11859-12) : I Get A Kick Out Of You
B-2 (12033-3) : Little Girl Blue
B-3 (11852-4) : They Can’t Take That Away From Me
B-4 (11853-4) : Violets For Your Furs

on November 5 (A-1, A-3, B-3, B-4) and November 6 (A-2, A-4, B-1, B-2), 1953.

Arranged by Nelson Riddle (A-4) and George Siravo (A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2, B-3), Dick Jones (or Reynolds) (B-4).
Martin Melucci-san pointed out that B-4 was arranged by Dick Jones (or Dick Reynolds) – Thanks for the info!
Engineered by Roy DuNann.

However, not all H-488 was cut by AES curve – a bit later pressing (shown below) seems to be cut by RIAA curve by better cutting equipment, with more high frequency range. The most significant difference is, that the latter copy do not have deep grooves on the label. Furthermore, there is an extra print saying HIGH FIDELITY RECORDING on the front cover – I have confirmed that there is another variation which have HIGH FIDELITY RECORDING sticker additionally pasted on the front cover. /p>

This copy has D8 matrix on both sides, and also Scranton pressing. This copy has better sound quality than the D4 copy I mentioned above – I guess the cutting equipment was changed in the AES ⇒ RIAA transition period but I’m not sure. Anyway, it can deliver the warm and fresh sound with marvelous mid-range (less bass and treble than recent recordings though) – the sound of “vacuum tube amplifier”, or the sound of Capitol Melrose Avenue Studio C – with natural echo of the studio, Sinatra’s marvelous voice is captured “on-mic”, while the string section is located a bit far from the microphone – an excellent recording. By the way, the engineer at the session was Roy DuNann (who later moved to the Contemporary label).

2nd variation, w/o deep groove on label, RIAA cutting

There is yet another variation of this 10-inch issue – it’s not H-488, but L-488 (which might cost a bit more). Ordinary thinking concludes that L-488 was released first, then later H-488 (budget release) was out. However, by inspecting the matrix stamps, it should be that H-488 was out first, then L-488 followed. The matrix of this copy (Scranton pressing) is D12 (Side-A) and D11 (Side-B). Furthermore, H was deleted and L is additionally stamped. The sound quality is similar to the D8 copy.

1955年、ブルーバラードの傑作と名高い「In The Wee Small Hours(Capitol H1-581/H2-581, W-581) (10インチLP 2枚組と 12インチLP) がリリースされた頃に、“Swing Easy!”“Songs For Young Lovers” の 2枚がカップリングされた 12インチ LP としてリリースされました。

In the same 1954, Sinatra recorded another masterpiece 10-inch LP entitled “Swing Easy!” (Capitol H-528) which became a smash hit. Then the 12-inch LP era was coming. In 1955, he recorded the Blue Ballads masterpiece album “In The Wee Small Hours” (Capitol H1-581/H2-581 double 10-inch, and W-581 12-inch), and in the similar period, “Swing Easy!” and “Songs For Young Lovers” were reissued in one 12-inch format.

Swing Easy – Songs For Young Lovers / Frank Sinatra
(Capitol [US] W-587)
12-inch version of H-528 and H-488

This copy has D6 matrix on Side-A (Swing Easy side) and D5 on Side-B (SFYL side) – again, Scranton pressing. Basically the same sound quality as H-528 and H-488, but I guess a touch of equalization was done – in fact, this copy sounds a bit edgy sound (with more treble) than H-488. Of course, the freshness of the sound is still there – probably cut directly from the 1st generation master tape (as well as H-488 and L-488).

1961年頃、Capitol“Songs For Young Lovers”“Swing Easy!”

The big problem is the next release. In 1961 or so, Capitol released two 12-inch LPs – expanded versions of “Songs For Young Lovers” (Capitol W-1432) and “Swing Easy!” (Capitol W-1429) respectively. Both LPs has four additional tracks which were originally recorded for 45rpm single releases. Without any doubts, this release had two big problems.

[Capitol W-1432 Front Cover] [Capitol W-1432 Label A]
Songs For Young Lovers / Frank Sinatra
(Capitol [US] W-1432)
expanded version (with four additional tracks) of H-488

The first big problem is the song order which is completely messed up. On the original 10-inch issue (and 12-inch issue), Sinatra and Riddle might decide the very song order which presented complete totality. But on this W-1432, the perfect song order is completely messed up. Furthermore, if you carefully look at the front cover of W-587 (12-inch issue), you will find where W-1432’s song order was derived from (plus, four additional tracks inserted here and there). In 1961, when the W-1432 was released, Sinatra (who started his own Reprise label) and Capitol had a serious trouble, and probably Sinatra did not have any more ambition for further Capitol releases. So, as for this album (W-1432, expanded version), Sinatra did not help Capitol to generate the new song order, I guess.

(part of W-587 front cover) (W-1432 song order)
[Capitol W-587 Front Cover] A-1: The Girl Next Door
A-2: They Can’t Take That Away From Me
A-3: Violets For Your Furs
A-4: Someone To Watch Over Me
A-5: My One And Only Love ※
A-6: Little Girl Blue
B-1: Like Someone In Love
B-2: A Foggy Day
B-3: It Worries Me ※
B-4: I Can Read Between The Lines ※
B-5: I Get A Kick Out Of You
B-6: My Funny Valentine

The second problem on this W-1432 is poor sound quality – almost all labels prefered extra equalization throughout the 1960s, and (unfortunately) W-1432 was not an exception. All tracks are suffered from poor equalization, and what’s worse, extra echoes are added. I don’t know why Capitol staffs wished to alter the sound that way – too much equalization and extra echoes would be the “trend” of the era, but I’m not sure.

As you can see, my copy is the second label variation (the first variation should have Capitol logo on the left). But on the other hand, matrix stamp is D1 on Side-A and D2 on Side-B, which may suggest that W-1432 did not sell well . . .

情報によると、1990年にリリースされた 3枚組 CD に収録されている “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”“I Get A Kick Out Of You” にはエコーがかけられていないそうですが、残念ながら私は未聴です。

Surprisingly, even recent CD reissues (which should have been digitally remastered from original tape in the vault) are also suffered from extra echoes or digital reverbs (with one exception, according to a certain source – I have heard that 3 CD box released in 1990 contains “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and “I Get A Kick Out Of You” which are not suffered from extra echoes) – Gosh, why do Capitol staffs prefer extra echoes so much? I don’t even know . . .

Now let’s move on to the Japanese pressings.

I don’t know much about the very first Japanese issue (by Toshiba Musical Industries) of W-587, but I have heard that Toshiba (at the time) imported a metal mother from the US then pressed for Japanese market. If it is true, the earliest Japanese issue may sound similar to the US pressing of W-587.

Well, I have two Japanese copies here – the one is ECJ-50017 (released in 1977), and the other is ECJ-50065 (released in the early 1980s). Interestingly, both copies are not suffered from poor equalization and extra echoes at all. Pressed with the second-generation tape (for original W-587), they really sound Hi-Fi literally (especially ECJ-50017 sounds excellent). Of course, H-488 and W-587 (both cut from original 1st generation master tape) have the freshness of the sound, and in this point they can’t lose ECJ-50017 and ECJ-50065 (which were cut from 2nd generation tape, 20 years after original recording was made), but these Japanese issues sound really Hi-Fi with adequate low/hi ends and lovable mid-range – as if we are listening to (a straight copy of) original master tape. I do believe that Roy DuNann originally intended “this sound” – actually they sounds Hi-Fi (especially on ECJ-50017) – I can hardly believe that the recording was made in 1953! I will surely recommend ECJ-50017 among all used vinyls available at fair price. It’s even better than original W-587 in some aspects.

In many Jazz recordings in the 1950s-1960s, engineers (such as Rudy Van Gelder) positively altered the sound of master tapes when cutting into the lacquers – they created “the sound of the vinyl disc”. However, this is a Sinatra’s recording – even the original issue (H-488 and W-587) doesn’t sound like the cutting engineer tried to equalize and alter the sound of the master tape into the vinyl. At least, “Songs For Young Lovers” may sound the best when listening to the original master tape itself.

By the way, I have heard that Mobile Fidelity’s Sinatra LP box contains W-587, which was NOT suffered from extra equalization and added echoes (like Japanese issues), and was cut directly from the original master tape (unlike Japanese issues) – Wow! This MoFi version won the highest praise among hardcore Sinatra collectors in the US, so I’d like to listen to the copy, but unfortunately the LP box is expensive . . .

There is yet another Japanese LP reissue – it was SGD-87 in 1992. Unfortunately, this copy is suffered from extra echoes and digital reverbs like CD reissues – sounding like listening to the album in a huge bathroom. Probably this LP was cut using digital master for CD reissue. The reproduction of jacket cover and the label is excellent, but the sound reproduction is not so good . . .

最終曲~violets for your furs…

    Sinatra & Jobim

Martin Melucci-san (who is a superb Sinatra collector) kindly let me listen to (a high bitrate MP3 copy of) “I Get A Kick Out Of You” and “The Girl Next Door” from the Mo-Fi LP edition – Wow! What a wonderful Hi-Fi sound!
A while ago, Martin-san sent me a comment on the Mo-Fi version (included below) – it’s just what the MoFi version sounds like! Thanks again Martin-san!
    > The dynamics are not limited, and are quite impressive.
    > Your jaw will drop when you hear the kick drum on “I Get a Kick Out of You”
    > – the tapes really have that ‘kick’ on there, but it’s missing from the
    > other LP’s, including the ECJ-50065 pressing.

  8. Hi Matthew-san, thanks for your comment and link – enjoyed.
I haven’t been active at the Steve Hoffman Music Forum for a few years, but I think I will be again in the near future.

  9. I’d love to hear your input, since you are obviously a Sinatra expert with a very good “ear” for sonic details. Should you have any comments, feel free to e-mail me, or to post in the Hoffman forum. Also, please be aware that this is an ongoing series of Sinatra comparisons. I just posted SWING EASY [ECJ-50065 scored very well] last night, and will be doing SONGS FOR SWINGIN’ LOVERS next. All can be accessed via the link in my previous post.
    Sincerely,
    Matthew
