Eddie-san’s brand new CD

Eddie Landsberg さんから，この前アメリカで録音した新譜のラフミックス CD-R が届きました．いま聴いている最中です．

My friend Eddie Landsberg-san kindly sent me the CD-R containing pre-master mix of his brand new album, which he recorded in his homeland a while ago. I am currently listening to the new CD.

Tenor, Guitar 入りのオーソドックスなオルガンカルテット，という意味では，彼の 1st アルバムである “Man With A Groove” (2002) と同系統のフォーマットです (あちらは tenor ではなく alto でしたが)．

This new recording was made by orthodox organ quartet (including tenor sax and guitar). This orthodox format can be also heard on his first album “Man WIth A Groove” (2002). His first album featured alto sax instead of tenor, though.

ともあれ，ハチャメチャにゴキゲンでグルーヴィー，という感じではなく，全体的にはしっとりとした演奏に終始してはいます (録音，マスタリングのせいかもしれませんが)．けれども，1st アルバムより圧倒的にノリが良く，いい感じでリズムがうねっているのは，メンバー 4人の相性が良いからなんでしょう．アップテンポの曲や，ハネ気味のリズムの 8ビートの曲なんかでは，各人のソロもゴキゲンに決まっていて，有機的な絡みも十二分に楽しめます．

Anyway, the impression of the album – although the atmosphere is not too wild and groovy, the whole impression is in quiet and calm mood (it might be because of such recording and mastering). However, I can say this new album is a way cool – the quartet really ”drives” with groovy undulations of rhythms, which definitely proves the affinity of each member on the session. For example, on such tracks as up-tempo numbers and eight-beat rhythmic numbers, we can fully enjoy fruitful improvisations by the members. Also, modest but professional call-and-response shows high level of magical chemistry among the four.

最終版の CD で，どういう「音」になるのか，今から楽しみです．

動ク Francois 樣

昨年リリースされたのを数ヵ月前に知ってから，ずっと欲しいと思っていた DVD．愛しの Samson François 様 の映像ですから．

ラヴェル：左手のためのピアノ協奏曲、グリーグ：ピアノ協奏曲、他　フランソワ、ポリーニ (at HMV)

特に「左手」．フランソワの代表的名演の一つと言えるアンドレ・クリュイタンス指揮パリ音楽院管弦楽団との録音 (1959年) の LP は愛聴盤で，この前茶魔から，デュトワ指揮モントリオール交響楽団，ロジェ (1982年) の CD を貸してもらい，更に先日某店頭でアバド指揮ロンドン交響楽団，アルゲリッチの CD を聴いたので，これが 4つめの演奏となります．

演奏している皆さん，というか，指揮者のフレモーさん，フランソワさんの変幻自在のペースにあわせるのが相当辛そう．フランソワさんも多少のミスタッチと一部ぎくしゃくした部分あり，周りにお構いなしで，いつもの様に自分だけの空気の中で演奏してはります．しかし，そんなものをもろともしないこの魅力はいったいなんでしょう．

クラシックと他ジャンルをいっしょくたにするのが無茶苦茶であることを承知の上で，フランソワさんは希代のスタイリスト (いかなる演奏でも，一音だけで演者が特定出来てしまうという意味で) だということなんでしょう．正統的な楽曲解釈に基づいた模範的な演奏 とは決して言えないフランソワさんの演奏．けど，クラシックどっぷりでは決してなくむしろ門外漢の私にとっては，演奏技術がどうのとか解釈がどうのとかいうことはもはやどうでもよくて，最も魅力を感じるものであるのは間違いありません．

しかし，映像というメディアのこの説得力はやはりもの凄いものがあります．この手の古い (1964年収録) 映像に付属する音声としてはかなり良好な部類 (モノーラルですが) に属しますが，ミキシングがけっこういい加減で，実際のオーケストラのバランスを無視してピアノの音が余りにも前面に出てきています．けれども，動くフランソワさんとあわせて見るだけで，こんなにも引き込まれてしまうとは．

グリーグのピアノ協奏曲の他にボーナスとラックとして収録されている，弱冠18歳のポリーニさんによるショパン前奏曲もこれまた必見．

POLICE Troubles 續報

Eddie さんからの前回のメールの続報．詳細はまだ詳しくは聞いていませんが，なんらかのかたちで解決の方向に向かっている様でほっと一安心です．

こんにちわ！たくさんの方々に一回にこのようなバルクメールを送る事をお許しください。
今回メールしたのはこれから協定により営業日の変更とセッション日の変更のお知らせの為です。

協定により ：
* 今まで土曜日慣行してきましたジャムセッションは金曜日に移行します（７：３０
〜１０：４０ｐｍ）（もしお友達で以前エディーズ　ラウンジにいらしたらぜひ通
達の方お願いいたします）
* お隣との騒音に関する問題は解決に至ったと思われますのでここにご報告いたします。
* お休みは今後月曜日、火曜日とさせていただきます。ご了承ください。

Dave Pell Plays The Dorsey Brothers’ Big Band Sounds (PRI 3010)

Rock や Popular のプロデューサとして活躍される更に前，かつて Jazz の世界で西海岸で一世を風靡した Dave Pell さん．今となってはこの辺りのサウンドはなかなか振り返られることが少なくなってきていますが，今聴いてみると，まあそれも仕方がないという感じではあります．古き良き戦前のビッグバンドの魅力を少しモダンなアレンジでしゃきっとかつオーソドックスに演奏する，そこが肝である訳ですが，こういうのに魅力を感じる人間は確かに少なくなってきているのかも知れません．

Mister Dave Pell, who was one of the most popular jazz musicians, arrangers and producers in the west-coast area of the U.S. (he later became famous also as a rock/popular producer). Such sounds as heard on this LP has been less popular nowadays. The essence of the west-coast bigband jazz in the 1940s-1960s would be the revival of good-old swing style with a little modern arrangements and orthodox performance – so recent people may not have attention to such kind of music.

POLICE Troubles at Kita-Senju

Here is a story from my dear friend Eddie Landsberg-san. I constantly heard he had a big problem with his neighbour Karaoke-bar, but recently the problem seems to be becoming bigger and bigger…

I hope the problem with be cleared completely up in the near future (in a peaceful way), both in Eddie-san’s point of view as well as his neighbour’s standpoint.

Eddie-san was born and raised in Philly, PA, but now he is a real “Shita Machi” person in Tokyo, Japan. I am certain that he is really “doing in Tokyo as Tokyo’s Shita Machi people do”. It’s simply fine.

A Letter from my dear friend

現在 Eddie Landsberg さんはレコーディングの為に一時帰国中です．その Eddie ちゃんからメールが届きました．

Mr. Eddie Landsberg, a very good friend of mine, is now staying in his homeland U.S.A. to record his brand new album. And just now I received an e-mail from Eddie-chan.

Eddie ちゃんの web にもまだ仔細は書かれていないので私も控えますが，素晴らしいセッションとなったとのこと．日曜日に最終ミックスが完了する予定だとか．早く聴いてみたいです．また，その他に，同じスタジオ，同じメンバーにて，教則用 DVD の収録もされたとのこと．

I am not mentioning the details on the session he let me know, ’cause Eddie-chan haven’t make ’em public on his web site either. Anyway, he said the session “went BEYOND expectation” (Wow!) He also said mixing/mastering wasn’t until next Sunday. I’d like to listen to the new CD too soon… Furthermore he filmed a DVD instructional/documentary which had lots of footage from the studio.

日本でのいつものセッションの様に，いかなる曲でも暴走しまくってないことを祈ってます（笑）

I sincerely hope that he did not go too fast even when playing a slow ballad, like he always do in Japan 🙂

Feb. 28, 2004: Jam Session Night at Eddie’s Lounge

Here I come again. It’s been several months since I visited Eddie-chan’s lounge located at Kitasenju last (when his lounge was a grand opening day).

To tell the truth, at that time I thought and was afraid whether he would/could have constant visitors after the grand opening day was over, but fortunately it was definitely needless worries.

北千住の Eddie ちゃんのお店に行くのはオープン初日以来ということになります．オープン当時は「これからコンスタントにお客さん入ってくれるのかしら」と若干心配していましたが，杞憂に終わった様です．

After the grand opening day, he had tried several attempts: placing a tiny drum set in the tiny lounge, digging jam sessions every Saturday night. I am so glad to see he has been enlarging his local, friendly and invaluable community.

その後小さめのドラムセットを設置したり，毎週土曜日には自由参加可能なジャムセッションを開いたりと，Eddie ちゃんのいろんな試みが実ってか，着実に草の根コミュニティは拡がりつつある様でほっと一安心．

Yesterday Saturday night, I went to Eddie-chan’s lounge with Hatta-san, who wished to join the jam (but couldn’t, as he couldn’t prepare an amplified pianica/melodica till yesterday night). Two altos (one also played organ, the other also on drums), one tenor, two guitars, one drums, as well as a nice lady who played duet organ performance with Eddie-san, were the members who joined to the jam led by Mr. Eddie Landsberg (who also played drums). Anyway it was again an enjoyable and comfortable night. Thanks Eddie-chan.

で，昨晩は，ジャムセッションに参加したいと言っていた八田さんと共に訪れました．残念ながら，ピアニカの調達が間に合わず，八田さんの演奏への参加はかないませんでしたが．alto sax 2名 (うち 1名は organ も，もう 1名は drums も)，tenor sax 1名, guitar 2名, drums 1名, Eddie ちゃんと連弾で飛び入りの 1名，そして Eddie ちゃん (drums も披露) でわいわいとジャムが行われました．ともあれ，昨晩もとても楽しい夜を過ごす事ができました．エディーちゃんありがとう．

Another fortunate was that I could watch the complete version of the legendary James Brown performance at Dallas in 1968 (just after Martin Luther King was assassinated).

もう 1つ嬉しかったのは，あの1968年ダラスでの JB のライブ (Martin Luther King 暗殺直後) の完全版ビデオを観ることができたことでした 🙂
