泣く子も黙る大名盤、My Bloody Valentine の “Loveless” (Creation CRELP 060) の UK LP盤、eBay とかヤフオクとかで2万〜6万円で取引されているのをふと目にしました。
I suddenly noticed that the LP version of My Bloody Valentine‘s stunning and historical masterpiece album “Loveless” (Creation CRELP 60) recently was selling for 20,000 YEN to 60,000 YEN on such sites as eBay and Yahoo! Auction (Japan).
なんかの勘違いではと思って過去の落札履歴を調べても、大量に高額落札されています。
Initially I thought it might be some kind of misunderstanding, and checked the past bidding history, but found a large number of high bids.
なんでまたこんなにバカ高い値段で取引されてるんやろう？と思い、いろいろwebで調べてみると、どうもオリジナル1stプレスのマトリクス刻印がどのパターンか、というので議論されている模様で、しかも議論はまだ収束していない感じです。
“Why is it being sold at such a ridiculously high price?” Then I searched the web and found that there seems to be a debate over which pattern was used for the matrix engraving on th original first pressings, and the debate has not yet been settled.
調べた限りでは、1991年当時の最初期プレスには手書き刻印 DMM TOWNHOUSE のパターン (The Townhouse Studios カッティング、Audio Services Ltd. プレス) と、手書き刻印 MPO の 2パターン (MPOプレスと EMI Music Publishing Ltd. プレス) の合計3パターンある、ということらしいです。
As far as I have been able to find out, the first pressings in 1991 were: a handwritten DMM TOWNHOUSE type (pressed at Audio Services Ltd.); two handwritten MPO types (one pressed at MPO, the other pressed at EMI Music Publishing Ltd.).
で、現時点でもっとも有力とされているのが、以下の順番ではないか、という説だそうです。

うちにあるLPのマトリクスを調べてみたら、2番目の DMM TOWNHOUSE 手書きマトリクスでした。1991年暮れに、多分四条河原町だか四条烏丸の輸入レコード店で新品を買った記憶です。
I checked the matrix information of the LP I own, and found that it was the second DMM TOWNHOUSE handwritten type, which I remember I bought new at an import record store either in Shijo-Kawaramachi or Shijo-Karasuma, Kyoto, probably at the end of 1991.

確かにCDよりは気持ちよく聴けるけど、他のプレスや再発LPと聴き比べたことはないからよく分かりません。
It’s certainly more pleasant to listen to than the CD, but I haven’t yet compared it to other pressings or reissues, so I’m not sure.
世界中のレコードコレクターは本当に怖い。。。（笑）

2025/05/06 追記： 参考として、Discogs 上の DMM TOWNHOUSE 手書きマトリクス盤エントリに寄せられた各種コメント によると、MPO マトリクス盤は CD にほぼ準拠する音、しかし DMM TOWNHOUSE 手書きマトリクス盤の音の方が好ましい、という意見が見受けられました。
Update (May 6, 2025) : For reference, various comments on the DMM TOWNHOUSE handwritten matrix entry on Discogs indicate that the MPO handwritten matrix LP sounds very similar to the CD version, but that the DMM TOWNHOUSE handwritten matrix LP sounds much preferable.
