Maestro Michael Yee’s New DAC Is On Its Way (that finally became MYDAC II later)

Maestro Michael Yee from Mount Shasta, CA, who has been a fabulous designer, developer and engineer of highly-acclaimed audiophile phono preamps (such as Phonomena, Phonomena 2, Nova Phonomena and SuperNova / SuperNova 2) and handful of power amplifiers, has been working very earnestly to develop a new DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) with a very new technique and method. I (living in Tokyo, Japan) have been a huge fan of him and his products since I bought a second-hand unit of Musical Surroundings Phonomena + BPS back in 2004.

カリフォルニア州マウントシャスタ在住のエンジニア、マイケル・イー (Michael Yee) さんは、Phonomena、Phonomena 2、Nova Phonomena、SuperNova / SuperNova 2 といったオーディオファイル向けフォノイコライザ（その他にもパワーアンプなど）の設計・開発を行った方で、その技術力と製品には絶大な信頼が寄せられています。私も、2004年初頭に Phonomena + BPS の中古を購入して以来、彼の生み出す製品（および彼自身）の大ファンとなりました。その彼が現在熱心に取り組んでいるのが DAC (D/A コンバーター) の開発で、従来にはない彼の開発した新しい技術が取り入れられているといいます。

 

This time, very friendly, diligent and honest person Michael-san kindly gave me the privilege to do a listening test of the prototype of his coming product that was intended to prove his new technique, and wow – although I am still new to the digital playback world (my primary music source still is “analog” – vinyl records), the sound nearly knocked me out – it’s very analogue!

とても親しみやすく、同時に勤勉で真面目なエンジニアであるマイケルさんが今回、開発中の DAC のプロトタイプを送って下さり、試聴させて頂けるという光栄にあずかりました。彼によると、このプロトタイプは彼の開発した新しい技術が間違っていないことを証明するために作ったということです。そして先日早速試聴させて頂くと。。。もうぶっ飛びました。PC オーディオやディジタルオーディオの世界はまだよく知らない（普段アナログばかり聴いている）私ですが、こんなにもアナログ的な音のするディジタル再生を聴いたのは初めてです。

RUDD14, Audiophilleo 1 & Audiophilleo 2

備忘録。

これらとか、お手軽 hiFaceTwo 辺りから、懐具合と相談して選ぶ感じかな。バスパワードな電源のクリーン化は（将来必要を感じたら） BusPower-Pro 使うなり、似たようなものを自作するなりで。

今のところ、個人的に惹かれてるのは、いちばんシンプルで、音質も高評価な Audiophilleo 2 かな。。。

Damping Motor Vibrations with Sorbothane

My GyroDec turntable – bought a second-hand in 2003 – is so-called “Mk.III” model – with Papst AC Motor (not stand-alone type, but full-height on the aclyric base) and GyroPower QC power supply (that will surely reduce motor vibrations like a charm, and the playback sound gets greatly improved).

私が2003年に中古で購入した GyroDec ターンテーブルは、いわゆる「Mk.III」モデルで、Papst 社製の AC モーター が、アクリル製の台座の上に取り付けられています。これを、標準のACアダプターの代わりに、外部電源ユニット GyroPower QC でドライブすることにより、モーターの微振動を最小限に抑えることができます（また再生音も信じられない程激変します）。


Later models like Mk.IV (stand-alone AC motor, isolated from the aclyric base) and Mk.V (stand-alone DC motor) will not suffer from the vibration issues. If I bought a stand-alone motor housing and tried acrylic buchery I would get my Gyro upgraded to the Mk.IV status, but not sure if I can do the buchery without breaking the base, so I tried very reasonable and cheaper hack.

更に新しい「Mk.IV」モデル（同じくACモーター）や「Mk.V」モデル（DCモーター）では、ターンテーブルのアクリルベースに大きな穴があけられ、そこを通す形で自立式モーターユニットが設置されていますので、アクリルベースにモーターの振動が伝わることはありません。自立式モーターのハウジングだけを調達し、アクリルベースにうまいこと穴をあけることが出来れば、「Mk.IV」相当にアップグレードできるわけですが、さすがに 1cm ほどの厚さのアクリル板に直径 10cm 程の穴を失敗なくあけるのは、ドシロートの私には難しそうです。そこでもっと 安価な解決策 を試してみました。

THE SUPREME SOUND OF 78 RPM RECORDS

On August 18, I drove east to Tsukuba City in Ibaraki, to visit my mentor/guru/master of Jazz 78rpm records, Tohru Seya-san – he’s been probably one of the greatest, generous and openhearted collector – also he’s been one of the most dilligent researcher of pre-bop Jazz.

もうひと月以上前になりますが、ジャズSPレコードの大先輩というか師匠というか尊師というか、つくばにあるその方のお宅に伺いました。数千枚以上もある膨大なSPコレクターにして戦前ジャズの熱心な研究で知られる 瀬谷徹 さんです。

 

We had a great time, discussing about old Jazz, listening to great Jazz sounds with his amazing audio equipment – an old tube amp, RCA professional 16-inch turntable, Jensen field speaker from 1930s and more – (believe me he’s not that snobbish, but he’s just a dilligent music enthusiast) – the first one we enjoyed was this record – 16-inch US Navy Transcription 33rpm record, featuring June Christy, Shelly Manne etc. Other 78rpms we enjoyed so much today includes Django Reinhardt, The Spirits Of Rhythm, Chick Webb, Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday, Meade Lux Lewis and many more that I was like in heaven…

その先輩のお宅でふたり、時を忘れて音楽の話題で盛り上がりつつ極上の音楽を楽しみました。この、16インチ放送局用レコードもかけられる業務用プレーヤーでまず聞かせてもらったのはジューン・クリスティとシェリー・マンを含む米海軍向け16インチトランスクリプション。その後もジャンゴ・ラインハルト、チック・ウェブ、コールマン・ホーキンス、ビリー・ホリディ、ミード・ルクス・ルイス、その他数え切れない程の戦前ジャズを、オリジナルのSP盤で、真空管アンプと戦前に作られたモノラルスピーカーで堪能させて頂きました。帰宅したあともしばらく余韻がさめやらないほど夢見心地の一日となりました。

CD player production ends at Linn

いつかはこういう日が来るとは思っていましたが、ピュアオーディオ系の名門 LINN がアナウンスする、ということに、大きな時代の節目を感じずにはいられません。

Most of us knew that it would happen in the near future – but this announcement by LINN, one of the most acclaimed companies in the pure Hi-Fi audio field, definitely shows us the big turning point in the audio history.

リン・プロダクツは、今年を最後に CD プレーヤの製造・販売から撤退することをアナウンスした最初のメーカとなった。 東レンフルーシャー地方に位置するこのオーディオファイル向けニッチな会社は代わりに、今後はディジタルストリーミング製品に注力していくとのことである。

Linn Products has become the first manufacturer to announce it will give up on CDs from the start of next year. Instead, the niche company, based in East Renfrewshire, will focus on producing digital streaming equipment.

Yet it continues to make turntables for vinyl records, as there remains a demand for the quality of sound compression offered by older record technology.

Replacing Phonomena BPS Batteries

日本に正規輸入されていないフォノイコライザ Musical Surrounding Phonomena と専用バッテリ電源キットを海外から中古で 購入 してから 5年以上が経過。さすがに充電式バッテリ電源ユニットもヘタってきたので、内部の充電池を交換。

Over five years have passed since I bought a second-hand set of Musical Surroundings Phonomena (and a companion Battery Power Supply unit) – nowadays BPS doesn’t work as expected, and it seems the rechargable batteries (in the BPS unit) have to be replaced.

Michell GyroDec Generations; Suspension Tower Upgrade Kit

こちらでは大変ご無沙汰しております。2歳を過ぎたやんちゃ娘を毎日自宅で面倒みながら仕事したり家事したりですと (笑) さすがにここの更新も疎かになってしまいがちです。今回はそんなやんちゃ娘の昼寝の間をぬって、ターンテーブルのパーツを交換したお話です。

It’s been a while since I updated this website last – I haven’t had enough time to post new entries here while I take care of two-year-old ‘tomboy’ daughter, doin’ daily household chores, doin’ my job all at home. Anyway the entry I am writing this time is a story of upgrading my turntable parts while my tomboy daughter was taking an afternoon nap…
