LEBO PEERLESS Generic Sleeve

Howard Roberts, Teo Macero and Miles Davis

Sugar-san's tweet on 13:59, May 20, 2023

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt.12

On the previous part 11, I studied on the history of the Columbia Long Playing Microgroove Records, which was unveiled on June 18, 1948. So many individuals were involved in this secret project behind closed doors since 1939 — including executives, engineers, and directors. The advent of microgroove LP surely marked a milestone in the industry.

This time as Pt.12, I am going to continue learning the history of disc recording — additional articles and interviews, as well as papers/particle regarding recording and reproducing characteristics for Columbia LP records, as well as the modifications to the professional reproducing equipment at radio stations, by reading and interpreting the technical papers and articles at that time.

What the “EP” Originally Stands For, Pt. 2

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt.11

On the previous part 10, I studied on the history and the background toward the revised NAB Standards in 1949. During the formulation, there was a strong discussion on the NAB Standards’ high frequency pre-emphasis, that was “too much” and “should be weakened to cope with the high frequency distortion”.

具体的には、100μs(+16dB at 10,000Hz)ではなく、少なくとも 75μs(約+13.5dB at 10,000Hz)に落とすべき、といった意見でした。

More precisely, many engineers and researchers at the time claimed that the 100μs pre-emphasis (+16dB at 10,000Hz) should be lowered at least to 75μs (approx. +13.5dB at 10,000Hz).

A few months have passed since I posted the last article for some reason – anyway, this time as Pt.11, I am going to continue learning the history of disc recording – the introduction of Columbia/CBS’s LP (Long Playing Microgroove records) for consumer market in June 1948 and its history. As this Pt.11 became extremely lengthy, the story of “Columbia” EQ curves for recording/reproducing will be featured in the coming episode (Pt.12).

The more I dug into the history (and advent) of Long Playing Microgroove records, the more excitements I got – like I was reading detective novels.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 10

On the previous part 9, I studied on the settings and the trends of how the commercial shellac records were reproduced (and recorded) in the 1940s.

This time, I am going to continue learning the history of disc recording – some of the notable discussion after WWII, especially the 1949 revision of the NAB Standards, around the advent of microgroove LP records. More detailed stories on equalization curves will hopefully included on this Pt.10 and the following parts.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 9

On the previous part 8, I studied on the history and background of “1942 NAB Curve”, the first recording/reproducing standards for electrical transcription discs used in the broadcasting industry.

This time, I am going to continue learning the history of disc recording – during the WWII, as well as post-WWII period, until the advent of microgroove LP records. This include growing discontent with the quality and experience with commercial shellac records, as well as how listeners and engineers tried to deal with “EQ curves” in these years. So this article is the exploration of “how the things were regarded at that time”, not of “what is the correct answer”.

Please note that this article contains the topics whose primary information (such as technical documentation and engineers’ notes) is rarely found, and I am going to read many magazine articles about the topics, to understand the situation of the 1940s indirectly.

Things I learned on Phono EQ curves, Pt. 8

On the previous part 7, I studied on the advent of piezo-electric pickups and the relationship with jukeboxes; an attempt to popularize constant-amplitude recording/reproducing without utilizing equalizers, etc.

This time, I am going to continue learning the history of 1942 NAB Standards, the first standardization ever in industry. It will become a very long article, but anywhere here we go.
