Visiting Seya-san’s House

I’ve still been very busy these days, but I also need a refresh – yesterday I visited Seya-san, an awesome Jazz 78rpm collector, living in Tsukuba, Ibaraki. The living room was filled with warm and rich sounds by various 78rpms, and I really enjoyed music, delicious foods, sake, and chatting with Seya-san and Okamura-san – many thanks for the precious hours!

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes / Carl Perkins

Just four hours after I published the previous article, the 78rpm was broken into pieces due to my carelessness – I was totally depressed. Anyway this is what could avoid the accident. It’s also on Savoy label, but the label design is different. I prefer the early design rather than this simple “note logo” design (which is also familiar on LP issues).

Rampage / Allan Eager

So what a fastinating and swinging label design this is (of course the musical content is also superb).

The Stairs’ Four Maxi Singles

As I mentioned in the past article, I love The Stairs and Edgar Jones (aka Edgar Summertyme) so much. The Stairs released four maxi singles in 1991-1992, as well as their only album. The maxi singles contains innevitable tracks which cannot be heard on the album. Also, they contains cover versions of very scarce 1960s garage rock bands. I sincerely hope all recordings by The Stairs will be reissued on CD! Now is the time, I believe, simply because Edgar Jones released his first solo album last year, and the album “Right In The Back Of Your Mind” is out now.

Drifting On A Reed / Coleman Hawkins

Here is what I’d been looking for for a long time – Thelonious Monk’s recording debut (except live session at the Minton’s Playhouse in 1941). Four tracks were recorded on the session, and this 78rpm contains the two.

Sonny Clark Trio (Time S-2101)

Last month I visited a certain vinyl shop in Tokyo and found the original mono LP of “Sonny Clark Trio” (Time T-70010). The most surprising thing was its price – 300 thousand yen (approximately 2,600 USD) – oh my!

Usually, a price of a hard-to-find vintage LP is roughly set by the “supply and demand” balance. Also, the price is also usually set by a shop’s own decision. And it’s also surprising that there are some people surely to exist who buy such LPs even though it’s too expensive against “reasonable price”. Anyway I (as one of “ordinary people” who makes much of “cost-performance”) must be a perfect stranger to such an expensive vintage LP.

Record Runner MUSIC'N

Yes, it’s a vinyl record player of good ol’ days and with lots of fun. Kusa-san gave it to me for free a while ago – many thanks!

Do no ever want to play your precious vintage LPs with this player – it will definitely damage the records! 🙂
