Max Roach a la carte

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put ’em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

 

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach’s other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

Your choice? LP with cover, or 78rpms without cover?

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice –
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

ある人種 (笑) にとっては、究極の選択かも知れません。
同一内容、ほぼ同時期のリリースのアルバムだとして、 ジャケット付の LP をとるか、 ジャケなしの SP をとるか。

Drifting On A Reed / Coleman Hawkins

今回は何も書きますまい。Thelonious Monk の初録音 (1941年の Minton’s Playhouse ライブ録音を除く) となる 2枚の SP 盤のうち 1枚。やっと手に入れました。

Here is what I’d been looking for for a long time – Thelonious Monk’s recording debut (except live session at the Minton’s Playhouse in 1941). Four tracks were recorded on the session, and this 78rpm contains the two.

Thelonious Monk in Philadelphia 1960 with Steve Lacy

先日、mhatta さんに 教えてもらって 速攻で購入した CD。 なんといっても Monk と Steve Lacy の共演が聴ける (!!) というだけでそそられます。

The other day mhatta-san let me know the release of the CD – we can finally listen to the Monk quartet with Steve Lacy on soprano sax!

The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Thelonious Monk

The Complete Dean Benedetti Recordings Of Charlie Parker ( My Human Gets Me Blues) より：

なんとこいつが(CD7枚組)、元々相場よりかなり安い値付けの上に30%引きで売られていた。人生愚直に真面目にコツコツと生きている人間には神さまがそれなりに報いて下さるということであろう。ありがたく購入させていただいた。

日本では Mosaic を含めたコンプリートアンソロジーものって，あんまり人気ないんですかね． 特に Mosaic，欧米では初期の LP リリース (のシリアル番号が若い奴) とかは，相当な高値を呼んでいるのですが，日本の中古市場では海外のコレクターが羨む程の安値で流通しているのがなんとも．私もかつて，吉祥寺の某店舗 (ってあそこしかないわな) で MR4-101 (Thelonious Monk) と MQ5-172 (Thad Jones) を「ほんまにこんな値段でええんか?!?!」という程の安値で入手しました．

さて，この MR4-101 は 1983年に Michael Cuscuna さんと Charlie Lourie さんが Mosaic Records をたちあげて最初にリリースした記念すべき 4枚組 LP ボックス． 元々は，Cuscuna さんがこれを Capitol にリリースを打診したけれども却下されたため， 自分でレーベルを立ち上げることになったのでした． で，ここに収録された音源は，現在では CD 2枚 ( Genius of Modern Music Vol.1 と Vol.2, 共に Amazon) その他で入手可能ですし，マスターテープ/ディスクの劣化を除けば， 恐らく現行の CD の方がより良質なトランスファーで聴くことが出来るでしょう． でもいいんです，安心信頼の Mosaic 箱だし，LP だし，それに安いし… というか CD でも持ってるんですが，まあいいや．

内容についてはもはや何も書き足すべきことはありますまい．私にとって，大尊師 JB 様と並び音楽的嗜好を決定づけてくれた大師匠 Monk 様の基本中の基本，1947年，1948年，1951年，1952年の各リーダーセッション(BLP-5002, BLP-5009, BLP-1510, BLP-1511) に加え，1948年, 1951年の Milt Jackson 名義のセッション (BLP-5011, BLP-1509)，1957年の Rollins のアルバムへの客演 (BLP-1558) の全セッションを未発表テイクも含めてクロノロジカルにまとめたボックスです．

10年位前から，いつかは買おう買おうと思っていたアルバム．今日，某店舗で，なんと LP の中古を見付けたので買ってしまいました．レーベルをよーくみると，オランダ盤であることが分かりますが，恐らくアナログはヨーロッパでのみリリースされたのでしょう．
