Eddie’s Back on Stage – and I’ll be back shortly

(こちらでは長らく更新しておりませんが、今暫くお待ち下さいませ。。。)

Dear readers – sorry not to get this weblog updated often. It’s been about six months since I put my last article here. I’ve been very busy taking care of my lovely daughter while working at home and I hardly managed to publish articles here. Anyway here I go.

After all these years, one of my best friends and an awesome Hammond organ player Eddie Landsberg is back on stage (on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Organ Jazz Club in Numabukuro, Nakano, Tokyo, Japan) with young and talented Japanese sidemen (Kyohei Yamamoto / 山本恭平 on electric guitar, and Kazumasa Oyamada / 小山田和正 on drums). I believe the new Eddie Landsberg Trio has many bright possibilities, although they need some more rehearsals. Definitely this band sounds the best among all the past live sessions by Eddie.

Universal Studio Blaze Burns Music History

古い音楽のファンにとって、悲しいお知らせです。

Sad, traggic, depressing news for us old music enthusiasts…

2008年6月1日にハリウッドのユニヴァーサル・スタジオで起きた火災により、1930年代〜1950年代の貴重なメタルマスターやマスターテープが多数消失した可能性が高まってきたそうです。

“A fire roared through part of Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, June 1, 2008” (quoted from Reuters.com news article), and there is a new rumor (or confirmation) coming that the fire consumed invaluable/historical metal masters and master tapes back from 1930s-1950s.

R.I.P., Mr. Akira Yamato, a great Jazz researcher

私が初めてジャズに興味を持った 1989年、何枚もの LP レコードを買いましたが、その中の数枚のライナーノーツはこの方によるものでした。

その後、(当時の) 新刊、バックナンバーを含め、ジャズ雑誌やジャズ関係の書籍においても、また復刻レコードや CD のライナーにおいても、この方の名前を頻繁に拝見しました。特に、レコードコレクターズ誌における連載「ビリー・ホリディのレコード」 (1985年〜) の緻密な調査に基づくディスコグラフィと音楽への的確なコメントには、大変な感銘を受けたことを覚えていますし、今読み返しても本当に様々な意味で参考になります (最近は就寝前に1982年〜1986年頃の最初期レココレを布団に潜りながら読むのがなぜだか日課になっています)。

その後東京に出てきてから、瀬谷さんに誘われて参加した SP コンサートで初めてそのご本人、大和 明さん にお会いすることができました。その時を含めて 3-4回お会いする機会に恵まれましたが、とても気さくに私の様な若輩者の話に応対してくれたことが本当に印象的でした。

数年前、最後にお会いした時は、ちょうど退院された直後だったかと思いますが、それでもあの好奇心に満ちた衰えぬ眼差しと、いつもの優しい微笑みは健在でした。



さきほど、瀬谷さんの掲示板 を覗いて、大和さんが先日他界されたことを知りました。

ただ数回恐縮気味にご一緒させていただき少し音楽の話をさせていただいただけであり、ディープな音楽談義に花を咲かせたり交流を深めたりする機会も残念ながらなかった私ですら、そのニュースを目にして今のような心持ちになっているのです。

ただただ、ご冥福をお祈りいたします。そして改めて、大和さんのなされてきたことに、これからずっと敬礼し続けさせていただきます。

Sleigh Ride / Herb Geller

It’s been nearly one year since I bought used vinyls and 78rpms last, but here it is now, my new acquisition – (I hope) I won’t be back rapidly to the centre of the “the road to vinyl/shellac junkies” (I hope and pray, actually), anyway it’s a kind of rehabilitation for me, buying a single 78rpm in last eleven months . . .

最後に LP や SP を買ってから、はや1年近く経過しましたが、ついに禁を破ってこの1枚 〜 もう以前の様に「ヴィニール / シェラックジャンキーへの道」へ戻らないでいたいものです (ホントにそうなればいいんですが)。ともあれリハビリ的にこの1枚、久しぶりに買ってしまいました。

Otono Edison Cartridges – 3mil version now available

以前 4mil バージョンしかないことを残念に思った (その時、メーカさんには「ぜひ 3mil バージョンもお願いします」とメールで切々と訴えておいたのですが) 音のエジソン の SP 用モノーラルカートリッジ。瀬谷さん から教えてもらったのですが、ついに 3mil バージョンも正式に販売されることになったようです。

While ago I wrote an article about Otono Edison monaural cartridge for 78rpms. When I wrote that article, there was only 4mil version available, while most of the 78rpms from “golden age” plays best with 3mil needle tip. So when I bought the cartridge, I wrote several e-mails to the company that they should sell 3mil version as well. Then in 2008, Otono-Edison finally decided to sell 3mil version as well as 4mil version – thanks Seya-san for letting me know.

しかし、5月に引越ししてから、まだ一度も SP 盤を聴いていません。ゆっくり音楽を聴く時間がまだとれずにいることもありますし、前の住まいより周りがあまりにも静かなので十分な音量で聴くのがためらわれる、というのもあります。最大の理由は、引越し後のどたばたで、SP がすぐに手の届かない場所にいってしまったためです . . . 時間ができたら、まだ整理完了とは程遠い私の部屋をなんとか整理し直さないといけません。

BTW the bad thing for me is that, since I moved to a new apartment in May, I have never had a chance to listen to 78rpms – maybe because I haven’t had enough time to fully enjoy listening to music, or maybe because this new place is too quiet all around (which is a very good thing for my sweet little baby, now in 9 months old) and I feel I hesitate to play vinyl/shellac records at louder volume as I used to do. But the most probable reason is, that I had been very busy and confused while moving/restoring whole lot of stuffs, and cardboard boxes which contains my 78rpm collection are out of reach behind my other stuffs (books, cloths, other boxes et al.) – so the first thing I have to do after I have spare time is to do another cleanup in my room . . .

Our first duet on piano

年末から3月下旬まで仕事が本当に大忙しでまともに更新すらできませんでした。音楽関係の web すらまともに巡回する余裕もなかった程。レコードもまったく買わず、音楽も以前ほどは聴く暇もなく、好きなテニスもほとんどできず、なんとも殺伐としたものでした。ともあれ、少しづつここに復帰しようとは思っています。

I had been way way busy since last December to the end of March – just too busy to post new articles and visit various music-related websites regularly. There’s no LP/CD records I bought during that period. There was not enough time to enjoy listening to music for months. There was not enough time to play tennis on the court. It had been so sad and miserable to spend like that, but I hope I will be able to update this site regularly as I had been doing before.
