「ディスコグラフィーを鵜呑みにするな」という名言があります。

There is an reasonable saying “Do not blindly swallow any info on the discography books”.

調査開始の礎として非常に有用ですが、最終的には真偽を自分の耳で確かめ、現物を探して確認するのが王道だということでしょう。

Discographies are very useful and valuable when using as a starting point of a specific research, but after all we have to find actual vinyls and give it a real listening.

著名なディスコグラファー Michel Ruppli さんの手による5巻組 The Mercury Labels – A Discography の第5巻のシングルリリース一覧には、どの盤が SP で出たのかマークがついているのですが、これが全くアテになりません。事実、以下に紹介するこの盤も、SP で出たというマークは記されていませんでした。

For example, Volume 5 of The Mercury Labels – A Discography (by a famous discographer Michel Ruppli) has numerical listings of entire 78rpm/45rpm releases, with marked abbreviations which indicates “issued on 78rpm and on 45rpm”, “issued on 45rpm only” etc. However, these marks doesn’t seem to be trustworthy: actually, this 78rpm (introduced here below) is NOT marked as “issued also on 78rpm”.

Various V.A. LPs, Pt.2 – Jazz Series Vol.8

さて、 V.A. 特集 第1回 に続き紹介する 2枚目は、あの Time レーベルのサンプラーです。 EmArcy レーベルをたちあげたあの Bob Shad が Mercury を離れて自ら立ち上げたレーベルとして知られており、Booker Little、Sonny Clark、Kenny Dorham などの作品が有名です。このサンプラー LP は、そのうちトランペッターに焦点を絞って編集されたもののようです。

Second sampler LP I’d like to introduce here is the one by Time label. Time was a label of that Bob Shad, who was famous as a producer of EmArcy label. Bob Shad left Mercury in 1958, and started his own label, Time.

Various V.A. LPs, Pt.1 – Riverside Modern Jazz Sampler

いわゆる Various Artists もの、あるいは Sampler LP といいますか、結構気に入っています。特に 1950年代や 1960年代の Jazz ものはお特感満載です。著名ミュージシャンの名盤といわれるアルバムをオリジナル盤で探そうとすると、かなりの出費を覚悟する必要がありますが、こういったサンプラーだと、比較的安価に、オリジナル盤に準じた音質を楽しむ ことができるからです。

I really like so-called Various Artists LPs, or Samper LPs. Especially, sampler LPs of Jazz in the 1950s-1960s are so fantastic – why? If you try to find original 1st pressing copies of masterpiece Jazz LPs by famous musicians, you will have to spend much money to buy ’em. However, such sampler LPs can be obtained at very reasonable price, and we can fully enjoy wonderful sounds which are very close to original LPs.

いろんなレーベルのサンプラーアルバムが徐々に集まってきましたので、ここでは思いつくままにとりあげていこうと思います。まず最初は Riverside レーベルのサンプラーから。

I have gradually obtained several Sampler LPs by various labels, and I’d like to introduce them here little by little. The very first one here is a Sampler album by Riverside label.

Flip, Flop and Fly / Tibby Edwards

2005年 5月、 私が生まれて初めて自宅で SP 盤を再生した 時 (こちら も参照) に最初にターンテーブルに載せたのは Charlie Parker の “Visa c/w Passport” でしたが、ここで紹介するのはそれより若干遡って 最初に購入した SP です。 たまたま立ち寄った ディスクユニオン 新宿ソウル/ブルース館 で、SP 盤半額大放出をやっていた時に購入した 1枚です。

The very first 78rpm I played on my turntable (in May 2005) was Charlie Parker’s “Visa c/w Passport”. On the other hand, this was the very first 78rpm I bought. I found this 78rpm at Disk Union Shinjuku Soul/Blues Shop I happened to drop by a while ago.

Waiting For The Sirens’ Call / New Order

リリースから半年以上経ってから買うのもどうかと思いますが、たまたま渋谷のレコファンで 500円引きで売ってたので捕獲。New Order が今年出した新譜の LP バージョン (2枚組) です。

The other day I happened to buy this album at the RECOFAN shop, Shibuya, Tokyo (it was sold at a reduced price). As you may know, this is the LP version (double LP set with gatefold cover) of New Order‘s brand new album in 2005, although it was firstly released over six months ago.

The Jazz Scene

苦節うん年。夢にまで見たアルバムをやっと入手しました。

Universal “Jazz The Best&amp” LP Collection Pt.2

実際のリリースから随分と間があいてしまいましたが、 昨年リリースされて そこそこ好評だった ユニバーサル　”JAZZ THE BEST ”LPコレクション の第2弾がこの夏リリースされました。

In last year, Universal Music Japan released a bunch of fine Jazz LP reissues entitled Universal “JAZZ THE BEST” LP Collection, most of which were highly acclaimed by vinyl enthusiasts. To follow the success, Universal Japan released another bunch of LP reissues this summer.



今回の復刻にあたり、岡村融さんを通じて UCJU-9031 / UCJU-9034 / UCJU-9043 と 3枚に関して、光栄にも貢献することができました (復刻の元となるオリジナルジャケットとレーベルの貸出)。 また、UCJU-9025 や UCJU-9039 といった EmArcy 原盤については、ファーストプレスのチェックポイントを指摘しました (ジャケット裏の印刷色やレーベルの微妙な特徴など)。

It was my great pleasure that, thru the famous Tohru Okamura-san, I could do a bit of contribution upon some of these LP reissues – lent the 1st pressing copies of UCJU-9031, UCJU-9034 and UCJU-9043 to the Universal Music Japan for reproduction purpose; also pointed out the detailed checkpoints of reproducing EmArcy LPs such as UCJU-9025 and UCJU-9039 (colour of the ink on the back cover, detailed design of the centre label, for example).

出来上がった製品の見本盤を 9月下旬に頂きましたが、相変わらず細やかな配慮が感じられる良質のリイシューで、特に UCJU-9031 や UCJU-9034 では、当時リリースされたオリジナル盤ではなし得なかった音質を獲得するに至っていると感じました。

In last September, I received the sample copies of the products. And I found that this 2nd series of the LP reissue project was also fascinating kind as well as 1st series. Especially, on such titles as UCJU-9031 and UCJU-9034, I feel that the brand-new-cut discs can deliver very detailed and beautiful sounds which even the original 1st pressing copies did not have.

レコードコレクターにもいろんなタイプがある訳で、著名なミュージシャンの、評価が高くびっくりする程高価なオリジナル盤を買い漁る人 (骨董品コレクター的な人と言えるでしょう)もいれば、人知れず埋もれた安くてほとんど知られていない盤の中から自分のお気に入りの音楽を「発見」して悦に入る人 (強いて言えば「オタク系」でしょうかね)　もいます。金にものを言わせる前者だけのコレクター諸氏は個人的には正直苦手 (音楽聴いてんだか「もの」を買ってるんだかよう分からんやないですか。そういう手合いに限って、聴いてる音楽のジャンルや対象が狭くて、音楽の話をしても全然おもろないし) ですが、まあ人それぞれ両者のバランスをとって楽しんでいるのでしょう。

それはさておき、特に後者の愉しみというのは本当に格別なものがあります。なにしろ、星の数ほども世の中に残っている盤の中から、聞いたこともないグループやミュージシャンのシングルを格安で拾いあげ、祈るような気持ちでターンテーブルに乗せて、流れてくる音楽がストライクゾーンだったときの喜びといったら! その楽曲が、そのミュージシャンが、世間でどういう評価をされていようが (あるいはされてなかろうが)、巷では有名であろうが無名であろうが、買って聴く自分自身にとっては新しいものであり、良さを「発見」したことに他ならないのですからね。また、今の世の中、web であれリサーチ本であれ、こういったマイナーなミュージシャンの情報を探すことだって出来ます。安値で買って、聴いて気に入って (まぁ期待外れのものも少なからずあるわけですが)、調べてなお唸ることが出来る。なんてリーズナブルな悦楽でありましょう。

というわけで (?) このサイトでも、私がそうやって購入してきたシングル盤を思いついた時に紹介していこうと思います。ただ、私の あっちのサイト との関係上、そのレーベルのものが多くなってしまいますが、ご了承下さい。

Force / Max Roach & Archie Shepp

言うまでもなく、ジャズドラムの可能性を極限まで引き出し、新たな世界を確立することに成功した巨人 Max Roach。戦後ジャズ史に燦然と輝く多数の名演奏を残した Brown=Roach Quintet 時代や、1960年代のアメリカという時代を反映した諸作に勢い評価が傾きがちですが、1970年代以降の作品にも注目すべき作品は少なくありません。

The Jazz Giant Max Roach was, of course, one of the most important Jazz drummers who explored the possibilities of drumming. His greatest works include the legendary Brown=Roach Quintet, and his numerous works in the 1960s which reflects the atmosphere of the 1960’s USA. However in the 1970s, he recorded several albums which were also far above his average.
