You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me / George Wettling

There are so many masterpiece performances of Mainstream Swing Jazz left on legendary Keynote label. Some might love Lester Young Quartet’s 1943 session too much; other recommendations might include Dinah Washington’s debut recording with Lionel Hampton Sextet in 1943, Coleman Hawkins’ quintet session featuring Teddy Wilson (1944), Kansas City Seven’s swingy session featuring Lester Young (1944), Cozy Cole All-Stars’ awesome recording featuring Earl Hines and Coleman Hawkins (1944), Lennie Tristano Trio’s debut recording (1947), and many more . . . We must deeply thank to the producer Mr. Harry Lim, who recorded most of these legendary recordings.

極上の中間派ジャズがこれでもかという程大量に録音された、伝説の キーノート (Keynote) レーベル。 その中でも、レスター・ヤング (Lester Young) カルテットの 1943年録音を愛して止まないファンは多いでしょうし、他にもダイナ・ワシントン (Dinah Washington) の初録音 (1943)、コールマン・ホーキンス (Coleman Hawkins) クインテット (Teddy Wilson 入り) の劇的な名演 (1944)、カンザス・シティ・セブン (Kansas City Seven) のスウィンギーなセッション (1944)、コージー・コール・オールスターズ (Cozy Cole All-Stars) 名義の、アール・ハインズ (Earl Hines)、Coleman Hawkins などを含む完璧なセッション (1944)、レニー・トリスターノ (Lennie Tristano) の初録音 (1947) など、名演を挙げればきりがありません。ただただ、これらの伝説的セッションの大半を録音し後世に残してくれたプロデューサー、ハリー・リム (Harry Lim) 氏に感謝するのみです。

Beyond The Little Willies (1) : Night Life

Norah Jones を含む5人のメンバーが、カントリーの渋い名曲 (と数曲のオリジナル曲) を今風にアレンジして好評の Little Willies。ちょうど、Norah のセカンドアルバム “Feels Like Home” のテイストをベースに更にカントリー寄りにアプローチしてみせたサウンド (Norah の片腕 Lee Alexander のお蔭でしょうか) は、改めて好感が持てるものと言えます。Norah が2曲でゲスト参加している、 Joel Harrison の 2003年リリースのアルバム “Free Country” (ACT [Germany] 9319-2) での、ジャンルを越えた自由闊達な再構築 (*1) (それがあのアルバムの良さなんですけどね) とは異なり、本アルバムのカヴァー曲は基本的に原曲のムードとテンポを遵守しており (とはいえ完全コピーではありません)、そこに「あの」現代的な響き〜透明感のあるアコースティックなサウンド〜を付加する、という方向性がみてとれます。

(*1)： とはいっても、Norah Jones 参加の2曲 “I Walk The Line” と “Tennessee Waltz” では、やはりあのスローテンポでムーディなアレンジメントが施されており、この 2曲については Norah のソロアルバムと同じテイストで楽しむことが出来ます。残りの楽曲は本当に面白い。ジャズっぽく、ロックっぽく、ときにはニューウェーブ的なニュアンスも交えながら、あらゆる曲がバラエティ豊かに再構築されていく様はスリリングでさえあります。

The Beatles From Liverpool To San Francisco

昨日 6月25日は WOWOW にて、来日40周年記念と銘打ってあれこれ Beatles 関連の放送があり、ハックに行き詰まりイライラとしていた私はリビングでボーッと観てしまいましたが。

例の「Concert For Bangla Desh」、過去に何度観たか分かりませんが、 Klaus Voormann のベース、Jim Keltner のドラムスが、 このコクのあるリズムを底辺で支えていることを再確認。

全曲やってくれるのか? という淡い期待を見事に粉砕された 「Live In Washington D.C. 1964」 は余りにも期待外れでしたが (たった 3曲だけかよ?!)、意外や意外、その直前に放送していたドキュメンタリー 「From Liverpool To San Francisco」 は、全然違う意味で見どころがありました。 本ドキュメンタリーでは、演奏シーンは一切出て来ず、 主にインタビューや報道フィルムなどで構成されているのですが . . .

Sunrise, Sunset / Sir Roland Hanna and George Mraz

ここ最近、いろんな デュオ演奏 のアルバムを好んで聴いています。デュオというフォーマットは、ソロ、トリオ (あるいはそれ以上) とはなにか異なる、なにか特別な形態なのかもしれません。二人という形式でしかなし得ない、両者の流れる様な対話が、時に二人だけではなし得ないかの様な音楽的な多様性を生み出すこともあったり。Sir Roland Hanna と George Mraz というスーパーデュオによるこのアルバムも、私にとってはそんな一枚です。

I’ve been picking up and enjoying various duo albums for a while. Sometimes duo performances create something special other than unaccompanied solo, trio or whatsover – they have fluent dialogue and chemistry between two players (which only two persons can achieve), which sometimes results in musical diversity as if more than two persons can achieve. This album by Super Duo – Sir Roland Hanna and George Mraz – is one of such things for me.

A few months ago when I posted an article regarding Earl Bostic, Seya-san commented that “That’s The Groovy Thing” was his favourite. Then I tried to find a copy for myself, and this is it (although I have this song on CD).
