ME-10: Nara Leão

ME-2 “Balançamba” に続く今回は、ちょっと番号を飛ばして ME-10 の Nara Leão にいってみます。 以前と同様、 ELENCO Discography からもリンクを張ってあります。

Preceded by my previous post on ME-2 “Balançamba”, let’s jump to the tenth ELENCO LP album (ME-10) by Nara Leão this time (ME-3 will be featured on the next update, I hope). As always, please also refer the ELENCO Discography entry.

これが恐らく初めて購入したブラジル盤中古 LPです。あの ナラ・レオン (Nara Leão, 1942-1989) さんの ELENCO レーベルにおけるデビューアルバムです。1963年にリリースされたオリジナルモノーラル盤。

This was the very first Brazilian used LP I ever bought – the debut album (1st issue in 1963, original mono) of Nara Leão (1942-1989) left on the ELENCO label.

ジャケットは恐ろしい程ペラペラ。薄手の無地スリーブに、表と裏の印刷紙を張り合わせただけ。1960年代の日本盤 LP や英国盤にも、薄手の紙で出来たペラジャケがありますが、これはその比ではありません。保管には細心の注意を払わないと傷めてしまいそうです。

The outer sleeve is very fragile and weak – front/back covers (printed on a thin paper) are just glued onto a plain paper sleeve. Old UK LPs (and Japanese LPs) sometimes came with very thin outer sleeves, but this Brazilian sleeve is more fragile and weak – we have to handle old Brazilian sleeves with extreme care to keep them from further damages.

The Firebird / London Symphony, Dorati

“The Golden Age of Recording” (Michael Gray、嶋 護 翻訳) より： もっとも完璧なレコードを選ぶコンテストがあったら、この一枚を推しよう。

2002年頃、この一文で始まる記事を某雑誌で初めて読んだ時、「またそんなおおげさな」と思ったものです。

しかし、実際にその盤を聴いてみた時、ぐうの音も出ませんでした。超絶な録音、スリリングな演奏、その両方の素晴らしさに、本当に鳥肌をたてながらスピーカの前で呆然としてしまいました。これはマジでとんでもないレコードでした。うちの現状のオーディオではその半分、いや二割も享受できていないのかもしれませんが。

前回 ME-1 “Vinicius & Odette Lara” を紹介しましたが、今回は続く大傑作 (敢えてそう書こう)、 ME-2 の Lúcio Alves です。 前回同様、 ELENCO Discography からもリンクを張ってあります。

Meditation / Toshiko Akiyoshi Quartet

30年間に渡って活躍されたビッグバンドを 2003年に解散、その後は主にソロピアノで活動されている 穐吉 (秋吉) 敏子 さん。最近はカルテットでの活動を再開され、この 3月にはレコーディングも兼ねたライブ演奏が行われました (私は残念ながら観に行くことが出来ませんでしたが)。長らく日本の第一人者として国内外で活躍し、今なお貪欲な創作意欲を失わないその姿勢には、ただただひれ伏すばかりです。

Toshiko Akiyoshi (“穐吉 敏子” in Japanese) has been the most active and most influencial Jazz player in Japan, who led her own big band for thirty years (in Dec. 2003, the band played its final concert in New York). Since then, she has performed solo piano/quartet concerts (with his husband Lew Tabackin). As a Jazz lover, I cannot help admiring her continuous efforts and infinite artistry as a Jazz musician.

Soothing Music For Stray Cats / Edgar Jones

時代錯誤と揶揄されようとも信念を貫き通した、レトロマニアの愛すべき頑固親父。ラーズ (The La’s) の リー・メイヴァース (Lee Mavers) と並び、1990年代初頭の UK インディーロックシーンで強烈な個性を発揮した ステアーズ (The Stairs) の エドガー・サマータイム (Edgar Summertime)。その彼が昨年 (本名の Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones 名義で) ソロアルバムを出していたことを最近になって知り、大急ぎで CD を購入しました。本当に最近の情報に疎くなってしまい、悲しいやら情けないやら . . .

Two lovable guys, hopelessly stubborn kinda individuals, perfection of anachronism – they are Lee Mavers (of The La’s) and Edgar Summertime (of The Stairs), both of who left remarkable individualities in the UK Indie Rock scene in the early 1990s. Recently I happened to know Edgar Summertime released his first solo album (under his real name, Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones) in 2005, which is so astonishing and astounding. It’s really awful and shameful to me that I know few things about recent music scene nowadays…

Present Tense / Sagittarius

… this article is dedicated to my (personal) melancholic memory for Sagittarius’ LP “Present Tense” when I was a teenager. And the English version of this article (probably) will not be available.

中学二年生の時 (1984) に 〜まだその頃は北九州に住んでいましたが〜 Beatles との衝撃的な出会い (*1) をして以来、少ない小遣いを工面しつつ物凄い勢いで LP やシングルを買っていたあの頃。静岡に引っ越し、高校に進学する頃には、すでに別テイクやミックス違いの類はほぼ全て手元に揃うまでになり、ブート LP などにも手を出し始めていたのですが、ある時ふと疑問がよぎりました。こんなに来る日も来る日も Beatles ばっかり聴いている俺はアホちゃうか? なんで他の音楽を聴こうとしないんやろう?

ここ最近は 例のイコライザ で遊んでいた為、最初は古いモノーラル LP、続いては SP盤をとっかえひっかえ聴いていましたから、アームには (最初は CG25Di、続いて) AT-MONO3/SP が装着されっぱなし。よって、ステレオ盤再生は久し振りです。もちろん、シェルを交換して、ゼロバランスをとり、ラテラルバランスをとって、針圧を適切にかけて… という一連の作業を行えばいいだけなんですけど、これが結構面倒臭かったりするんですよね。あぁ、こんなことなら、工作がかなり面倒そうなダブルアーム化 (1.2cm 厚のアクリルベースに穴をあけたり、アームベースをテンプレートに、アルミ製のサブシャーシにドリル穴をあけたり、など) をしてしまいたいものです。今のところ、やる勇気はないんですけどね。

それはさておき、えっちらおっちらと DL-103R に交換/調整し終わり、フォノイコライザの負荷抵抗とゲインを調整し、最初に再生したのはこの LP でした。 記憶が正しければ、2年ほど前に新宿の某ジャズ専門店で購入したものです。
