フランキー・レイン (Frankie Laine) さんが 6日、心不全の為 93歳で亡くなったそうです。大往生といっていいのかもしれません。
Mr. Frankie Laine died on 6th of February, of heart failure. He was 93 years old – I hope it was a natural and peaceful death.
ついにこの時がきてしまいました。
永遠にサンタさんになってしまいました。
我が尊師、齢73にて逝去。
今年も数多くの RIP がありましたが、個人的に最もショックが大きいものとなってしまいました。
尊師の成した、余りにも偉大な音楽的革新と革命を改めて噛みしめつつ。
仕事の忙しい合間に、Mercury / Clef / Verve 時代「以前」の Krupa / Kenton 時代、Signature レーベルなどでのソロデビュー時代について、記事を準備していたところでした (最近はこの辺りの Anita がお気に入りで良く聴いていたんです) が、間に合いませんでした。合掌。
Although I had been so busy for my own job, I sometimes wrote an article dedicated to Anita O’Day in her early years, including Krupa/Kenton days, as well as her first solo recordings such on Signature label (recently I love to listen to her early years, actually). But it was late – her passaway came first. Rest In Peace, lady Anita . . .
享年84歳。コペンハーゲンにて息を引き取られたそうです。
サイケやガレージが大好きないちファンとして、私にとって シド・バレット (Syd Barrett) は余りにも大きな存在でした。Syd Barrett が Pink Floyd であり、その逆も真。一体、“The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” や “The Madcap Laughs” といった奇跡的なアルバムを、彼以外の誰が作れたというのでしょう? そして可愛らしさと狂気が同居したかの様な “Arnold Lane”、“See Emily Play”、“Apples And Oranges” といったサイケポップチューンを作った職人でもありました。唯一残念なのは、彼はもう何十年も前から、(精神的に) あっちの世界に行ってしまっていたことです。
For me as a fan of Psychedelic / Garage music, Syd Barrett meant everything – Syd Barrett was Pink Floyd, and the reverse being true. Who else could make such stunning albums like “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” and “The Madcap Laughs” ? I also love his/their Psyche-Popper “Arnold Lane”, “See Emily Play” and “Apples And Oranges”. The only regret was, that he had already been (mentally) away from this world for dozens of years . . . .
私に出来ることは、ただただ「どうぞやすらかに」と祈り、彼の残した音楽的財産を聴き続けることだけです。
All we can do is to say “rest in peace”, and continue listening to his works for any longer.

今さらながら、御冥福をお祈り致します。
共に Mercury Record Corporation (1945-) の創設時メンバー。プラスティック製造会社のオーナーでレコードプレス工場を所有していた Irving Green と、デザイナー出身の Art Talmadge (有名な EmArcy のドラマーロゴのデザイナーでもあります)、そして Louis Jordan などのマネージャーとして知られていた Berle Adams の 3人によって、戦後アメリカレコード史に名を残したメジャーマイナーレーベルが誕生したのでした。
スタート直後から、黒人白人の別を問わず、幅広い音楽ジャンルを積極的に録音しリリースしてきたレーベル。のちにあの Quincy Jones を副社長に抜擢したのも Irving Green その人でした (当時としては黒人が白人オーナーのレーベルの副社長に就任するというのは極めて異例のことだった様です)。
その創設メンバーの 2人があいついでこの世を去ったことに、特別の感慨を抱かずにはいられません。
As many people already know, the famous organ player Billy Preston passed away on June 6th, at age 59. At least in Japan, so many blogs talks about his passaway, to say Rest In Peace to him and his music ever been created.
皆さん御存じの通り、ビリー・プレストン (Billy Preston) が 6月6日、59歳で逝去されました。日本ではあちこちのブログなどで彼の死について触れられており、彼の残した音楽への思いが綴られています。
It is very interesting on the other hand, that most people mention his name from the Beatles’ standpoint – regarding him as the “5th Beatle”. Unfortunately, even after I know the fact he passed away, I didn’t wish to listen to his famous works of Beatles-related context, such as “Get Back” sessions, or leader albums on Apple label. I don’t even know why I didn’t intend to give them a try.
その一方で非常に興味深いのは、多くの方々が彼のことについて紹介する際に、ビートルズ寄りの視点から触れているということです。いわく、“Get Back” セッションでの多大な貢献による「5人目のビートル」であったり、Apple レーベルでのリーダーアルバムであったり。しかし、彼の訃報を知った時に、私はなぜだかこのあたりの音源を聞こうとは思わなかったのでした。
