A Great Day In Tokyo with Michael Yee

November 22, 2013 – it was really a very beautiful and sunny Autumn day in Nerima, Tokyo – I had the honorable privilege to meet Mr. Michael Yee from Mount Shesta, CA, who is a famous developer of Phonomena (I bought this back in 2004), Phonomena 2, Nova Phonomena and SuperNova / SuperNova 2 (he kindly handed over this superb product to me) and handful of power amplifiers, and his latest production, MYDAC II (he was kind enough to lend me the prototype version last year). 2013年11月22日、ここ東京都練馬区はとても美しくポカポカ陽気の一日でしたが、そんな日にカリフォルニア州マウントシャスタから来日している Michael Yee さんと会うことができました。彼は、有名なオーディオ機器開発エンジニアで、私も彼の製品を長年愛用しています。彼は Phonomena（2004年に私が購入した製品）、Phonomena 2、Nova Phonomena そして SuperNova / SuperNova 2（昨年なんと譲って下さいました）といった蒼々たるラインアップのフォノイコライザーアンプや、独自のパワーアンプ開発で知られています。彼の最新の製品は DAC で、MYDAC II として昨年末から販売されています（やはり昨年、製品化前のプロトタイプ基板を貸して下さいました）。

KUNIKO PLAYS REICH: Electric Counterpoint Version For Percussions

クルマで移動中、あるいは自宅のオーディオで、いろんな音楽をかけるわけですが、6歳になる娘に媚び諂って子供向け音楽をかけたりすることは滅多にありません。 When I am driving with my car audio, or when I am at home listening to music with my stereo system, I play various kinds of music. Sonny Rollins の Our Man In Paris (RCA Victor, 1962) の完全版録音が某所で出回っており、ものすごい演奏に圧倒されノックアウトされました。2015年にはハーフオフィシャルでCDにもなったようです。

Tour Electric Mastering’s New Vintage Cutting Chain With Analog Legend Sean Davies

非常に興味深い映像を見つけました。1960年代に Decca でエンジニアとして勤務、現在では往年のアナログレコード全盛期に活躍したヴィンテージ機器（カッティングレース、カッティング時に使用するテープデッキ、真空管アンプなど）のメンテナンスを行っている、伝説のオーディオエンジニア、サム・デイヴィス (Sam Davies) 氏が実際にレストア・メンテナンスして、実際にLP復刻に使用している機材、Ortofon / Lyrec 1965年製カッティングマシン一式を紹介するものです。 I came across an very interesting video on the Internet – the living legend Sam Davies, who worked as an engineer at Decca in the 1960s and now doing restoration/maintenance of vintage studio equipments (cutting lathes, reel-to-reel playback tape machines, all vacuum tube amplifiers, etc), introduces his vintage cutting chain (by Ortofon/Lyrec, 1965) which he actually uses for reissuing vintage vinyl LP records.

貴重な音源を公開している Wolfgang’s Vault / Concert Vault から LP がリリースされたので、Thelonious Monk の1959年 Newport Jazz 音源と Van Morrison の Live At The Bottom Line 1978 を買ってみました。

That’s A Plenty! (Part 2)

娘が生まれて初めて「That’s A Plenty」を聴いてからはや3ヶ月。未だにこの楽曲に飽きる気配はみせません。クルマで移動中は、かならず That’s A Plenty プレイリストの再生をせがみますし、最近購入したディジタルピアノでも That’s A Plenty の Aメロ Bメロを嬉々として弾き、自転車でお散歩中も鼻歌でメロディを歌う毎日です。 It’s been three months since my daughter knew that old standard tune “That’s A Plenty”, and she never lost interest to this song: she always ask me to play the playlist (on my iPhone) containing various versions of “That’s A Plenty”; she loves to play A melody and B melody of that tune with her new digital piano; she still hums the tune while she rides on her bicycle outside.

That’s A Plenty! (Part 1)

私がここ暫く Plays Monk ものにドップリ浸っている一方、5歳の娘は最近ある曲に熱狂的にハマっています。 I’ve been exploring the vast world of “Plays Monk” by various musicians (as you see on my previous posts here), while my five-years-old daughter fell deeply in love with one particular song.   1914年、Lew Pollack 作曲、Ray Gilbert 作詞のスタンダードナンバー、「That’s A Plenty」です。 The song is “That’s A Plenty”, an old standard tune written by Lew Pollack and Ray Gilbert in 1914.     （私のお下がりの）娘の iPhone には、現時点で32バージョン（一部同一演奏の重複あり）の「That’s A Plenty」が同期されており、毎日何度も何度も聴いたり歌ったり弾いたりして楽しんでいます。 Her iPhone (handed down from me) always contains many versions of “That’s A Plenty” (32 versions so far) – she enjoys this number so much, listening to it, humming along with it, playing it on keyboards, etc.

Diversity of “Plays Monk”, Pt. 6: Hal Willner – That’s The Way I Feel Now

真打ちその1。ハル・ウィナー プロデュース作、全てのモンクトリビュートものの規範となる素晴らしいアルバムです。唯一といっていい欠点は、（過去に多くの方が指摘してきたように）「このアルバムがモンク存命中に出なかったこと」という一点だけでしょう。オリジナルのリリースは1984年。モンクがこの世を去った2年後になります。
