我が家にあるのは、1994年製の GyroDec です。2003年に中古で購入した際 は、SME Series II Improved トーンアームがついていましたっけ。すぐに SME 3009-R に交換してしまいましたが。

My turntable is 1994 GyroDec, which I obtained second-hand in 2003. I remember it was equipped with the SME Series II imp tonearm, that was instantly swapped with the SME 3009-R tonearm.

もう20年のおつきあいになりますが、いちども手放したいと思ったことはありません。

It’s been twenty years already with this turntable, and I have never thought it time to let that go.

GyroDec, with eternal love

1994年式のいわゆる Mk.III モデルなので、オリジナル状態では Papst AC モータによる駆動で、かつモータハウジングは自立式ではありませんでした。また、吊り下げたスプリングでサブシャーシを保持するサスペンション部分が Mk.IV 以降と異なる旧式です。現在からみると、購入直後の状態はいろんな点で古さが目立つものです。

My 1994 GyroDec is so-called the “Mk.III” generation, originally equipped with the Papst AC motor. The motor housing is a non-standalone type, fixed to an acrylic base. Also, the construction of the suspension turrets (to hold the springs to keep the metal sub-chassis level) was originally different from that of Mk.IV and beyond. It actually was a turntable from the 20th century, when I obtained this particular unit back in 2003.

しかし、1981年に登場した初代 GyroDec から40年あまりに渡り、細かな改良を加えながらいまだに新品販売されているのはすごいことです。

However, it is truly remarkable and amazing that, since its introduction in 1981, new units of GyroDec have still been manufactured and sold by J.A. Michell Engineering Ltd., for 40 years.

さらに、最新式の GyroDec や Gyro SE 相当にアップグレード可能なパーツが、製造元である J.A. Michell Engineering, Ltd. から常に提供されているのも、いかにも職人気質な英国らしさを感じるところです。サードパーティ製のアップグレードパーツも非常に多く発表されており、GyroDec シリーズの本国における根強い人気が伺えます。

Furthermore, the manufacturer J.A. Michell Engineering, Ltd. has always been providing “upgrade parts” that will bring your old GyroDec to the latest specification, showing some kinds of “craftsmanships and Britishness”. A number of third-party upgarde parts are also available, indicating the strong popularity of the GyroDec family, especially in the UK.

私もこれまでに、数多くの純正アップグレードパーツ、サードパーティパーツを導入してきました。

Since 2003, I have gradually applied Michell’s original upgrade kits, as well as many third-party upgrades, to my 1994 GyroDec.

その結果、もはや導入当初のオリジナル GyroDec Mk.III モデルの音とは別次元の再生音が出るまでになりました。

As a result, my upgraded GyroDec now presents far better sound reproduction than what the original 1994 Mk.III could deliver.

相変わらず、モータハウジングはアクリル台座に取り付けられたタイプのままですが（これを自立式にするにはアクリルベースの改造が必要）、今でもずっとお気に入りのターンテーブルシステムです。

I am still in love with this turntable, although the motor housing is still fixed to its acrylic base (in order to get my GyroDec to the standalone motor housing version, serious acrylic butchery will be needed).

…is obtaining Orbe SE an ultimate upgrade from GyroDec?

ここからさらなるアップグレードを目指すとすれば、代わりに Orbe SE を入手することになるのかなぁ、なんてこともよく考えました。

I have had a tiny hope of further upgrade(s) to my GyroDec, and sometimes I thought of obtaining the Orbe SE as a straightforward step-up from the GyroDec.

しかし、Michell Engineering の代理店が日本になくなってしまった現在（1980年代〜1994年はアール・エフ・エンタープライゼズ、2005年〜2019年は東志でした）、日本で新品を購入するのも大変です。

However, there is no authorized importer of Michell Engineering products in Japan now (previously, R.F. Enterprises was an authorized distributer from 1980s to 1994; TOSY Corporation from 2005 to 2019). It means that, obtaining a brand new unit of Orbe SE is becoming a fairly difficult task.

また、日本代理店があった頃にも、そもそも台数がほとんど出ていなかったと推測されるため、Orbe / Orbe SE の国内中古市場（たとえば ヤフオク！ など）での流通は非常にまれです。

Also, it is known that few Orbe / Orbe SE was sold in Japan — the primary reason why we seldom see the listing of used Orbe SE in the Japanese market, including “Yahoo! Auction” for example.

Devil speaks at the right time, Pt. 1

そんな時に悪魔の囁きが。

… and here comes the Speak of the Devil at the right time (?).

Orbe SE は新品価格が GBP 4850（2023年6月現在の為替レートでいうと 88万円オーバー）、という、私にとってはとてつもなく高価なターンテーブル（もちろんアーム別、アームベース別）です。

Orbe SE is an expensive turntable, at least for me, with the price tag of GBP 4850 (over JPY 882,000 according to the currency rate as of June 2023), of course without the tonearm and the tonearm base.

けれども、この中古の個体は予算範囲内だったので、さっそく Buy It Now してみました。

But this particular used unit was within my budget, so I instantly hit the Buy It Now button.

親切でやさしいセラーの方とのやりとりは順調に進み、無事出荷連絡とトラッキング情報を受け取りました。その後、トラッキング情報を毎日追っていましたが、ある日突然、荷物は差出人の方に戻り出しました。

Communication with the kind and friendly seller went extremely smooth, and I received the shipping notification with the tracking information without any issues. I then followed the tracking information as a daily basis, until one day I noticed the package suddenly started going back to the seller.

原因は不明ですが、荷物が HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) の出国時審査で落ち、「restricted contents」という扱いになっていました。結局、この取引はなかったことになり、全額返金されました。

The detailed reason was unknown, but the export inspection at the HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) resulted in the parcel being stated as “restricted contents”. After all, the deal was cancelled, and I got a full refund.

Another devil speaks at the right time, Pt. 2

憧れの Orbe SE を適価で入手できるせっかくの機会を失いましたが、まぁいいや、いまの GyroDec だってもちろん気に入っているし、けど自立式モータにだけはしたいよなぁ、あぁアクリル板ベースに穴を開ける加工はできればしたくないなぁ、などと思っていたところ、今度は Facebook Messenger で悪魔の囁きが届きました。

I lost the chance to get the Orbe SE at a reasonable price. But I was thinking, like “Oh well, of course I still love my GyroDec”, “but I also want to make it to convert to the standalone motor version”, “on the other hand I don’t want to drill a large hole in the acrylic base”, etc., when I received the whisper from another kind devil, via Facebook Messenger.

ぜひぜひ、詳細を教えてください、と連絡したところ、翌日にお返事をいただきました。

I instantly replied to him with the request for the details. On the next day, I received another message.

すでにツインアーム用に改造されている Orbe SE が、これまた新品を考えたら非常にリーズナブルな価格設定で目の前にあります。さらに、現状の写真を送ってください、とお願いしてみました。

The Orbe SE, already converted to the twin-arm version, is presented to me by another kind person, with a very reasonable price. So once again sent him a message, asking for any photos of the unit, in order to check the current status.

木製のカスタムアームベースに SAEC 407/23 トーンアーム がマウントされている、というのもいいですね。他にも Audio Origami PU7 や SME 3009 Series II (non-improved)、 SME Series IV などもお使いだったとのことです。そしてよくみると、純正の 33 1/3 rpm + 45 rpm プーリではなく、おそらくサードパーティ製の 33 1/3 rpm ダブルプーリになっていることが分かります。回転数変更は電源ユニット側で行えますので、ダブルベルトにしてさらに安定した回転を得られそうです。

It’s nice to see the SAEC 407/23 tonearm, mounted onto the custom wooden armbase. He even let me know he had used such tonearms as Audio Origami PU7, SME 3009 Series II (non-improved), SME Series IV, etc. Also, closer inspection of this photo shows the gold pulley, not the original 33 / 45 one, but (probably third-party’s) 33 double pulley. So it enables the use of double belts for more stable 33 1/3 rpm rotation (33 / 45 speed can be changed with a tiny push button on the NC PSU).

国際詐欺ではないですよ、と証明するかのように、手書きメモを添付した写真を送ってくれました。そして同時に、私が過去に Facebook で紹介した「Vinyl: The Art of Making Records」の本まで引用してくださる念のいれようです（笑）

He even took a picture of the turntable with a tiny memo, as a proof that this was NOT an international scam. He even captured the “Vinyl: The Art of Making Records”, the book I previously mentioned in my Facebook post 🙂

購入を決断、大型荷物が到着するまでの間ももいろいろやりとりをしていました。他に所有されているターンテーブルや好みのトーンアーム/カートリッジなど、お使いのオーディオシステムについて教えてくださいました。国を超えたオーディオの先輩のお話やアドバイス、とても興味深く参考になりました（笑）

And I decided to buy the turntable from him. While waiting for the large parcel to arrive, we continued discussing online about many others. He even told the story of his own audio system in the past and the present, including his preferences to tonearms and cartridges. It was really wonderful and interesting to hear the story and the advice, from an elder audio enthusiast abroad.

へぇ、Classic Turntable Company という レストア/アップグレード版 Garrard 301 ってのがあるんですね、知りませんでしたが、非常に興味深いです。

Hmmm, I never knew the existence of restored and upgraded Garrard 301, by the Classic Turntable Company. Looks very interesting.

Orbe SE Twin Arm Version Has Arrived

今回は、返送されることなく（笑）2022年12月に無事届きました。しかし、実際に音を出すまでにやることはたくさんあります。

This time, the parcel safely arrived to Japan in December 2022, without it being returned to the sender 🙂 However, there are a bunch of things to get done before the turntable becomes ready playing records.

まず、オリジナルの箱の中の緩衝材がボロボロになっており、帯電した発泡スチロールのカスの対応が大変でした（笑）

First of all, I had to eliminate countless styrofoam particles (statistically charged) inside the original box.

230V PSU in 100V environment

次に、モータの電源ユニット（PSU）がオリジナルの英国仕様 230V であるため、改造して 100V 仕様にしなければなりませんが、Michell 社にも相談した結果、今回は安直に 100V to 230V のステップアップトランスを調達することにしました。

Next thing is the original PSU, which works with 230VAC, while Japan’s household power is 100VAC. So I need to do some modification of the PSU, but this time, after I contacted the Michell company, I decided to take the easiest solution: obtaining a 100V to 230V step-up transformer.

Tonearms for the Orbe SE

次に、今回のツインアームバージョン Orbe SE に装着するアームの選定です。

The next task is to select the two tonearms to be used with the twin-arm version of the Orbe SE I got this time.

GyroDec 上で長年使ってきた SME 3009-R（2003年10月にオーストラリアからデッドストック新品購入）を、そのまま移植してもいいのですが、Orbe SE で78回転再生ができるメドが立っていない現状では、True Point Audio 社製 PSU による3スピード対応済 の GyroDec も残しておく必要があります。一方、同じトーンアームでターンテーブルだけが異なる場合の比較試聴もしたいですから、まず状態の良さそうな SME 3009-R Black Edition を某オークションで調達しました。

I have been using SME 3009-R (bought a new stock from Australia in Oct. 2003) with my GyroDec, so it would be fine to transplant it to the Orbe SE, but as I still couldn’t find the way to get Orbe SE compatible with 78 rpm yet, I think I will keep my loving GyroDec which is compatible with three-speeds using the True Point Audio PSU. On the other hand, I would like to do some comparative auditions with the same tonearm but with the two different turntables (i.e. Gyro and Orbe). So I decided to obtain an used 3009-R Black Edition tonearm in excellent condition, at a certain online auction service.

調達したら、すぐにドイツの Analog Tube Audio に送付し、念のためのリファービッシュ、ブロンズナイフエッジへの交換、コネクタの5DIN化、をお願いしました。以前は自分でパーツを買ってナイフエッジ交換およびコネクタ交換を行いましたが、今回はプロにお任せすることにしました。2023年1月に送ったあと、いろいろあって（笑）、戻ってきたのは4月下旬でした。

Soon after the acquisition, I sent the 3009-R Black Edition tonearm to the Analog Tube Audio in Germany, asking for the refurbishment, bronze knife edge installation, as well as the conversion to the 5-pin DIN. Previously I bought the kits and did DIY conversion for my 3009-R, but this time I left it to the professional. After a few months, the refurbished tonearm came back to Japan.

また、人生初となる（笑）フィックスドシェルのストレートトーンアームとして、SME Series IV の中古も調達しました。Series V は中古でもかなり高値安定ですし、新品価格はもはや雲の上の値段ですし。

Furthermore, for the first time ever, I bought a fixed shell straight tonearm, second-hand SME Series IV. I know that even the second-hand Series V always carries the expensive price tag recently; and the new stock costs skyrocketing.

もし新品で購入するならば、GLANZ MH-9Bt または Rigid Float/Ha 7″ 辺りに興味がありましたし、D さんがおすすめしてくれた Sonare SA-1.2 も楽しそうです。しかし結局、今回は無難な選択となりました。

If I were to choose brand new ones, I would be interested in obtaining such tonearms as: GLANZ MH-9Bt, or Rigid Float/Ha 7″. Also, it would be very interesting to get the Sonare SA-1.2 which Mr. D recommended me… After all, my selection became very conservative.

Armboards for SME Tonearms

そして、SME トーンアーム用のアームボードを調達しないといけません。しかも今回は2つも。

Next, I need to procure the armboard for SME tonearms — two armboards in particular.

Michell 社に直接問い合わせたのですが、在庫なし、というか「新品製造用ロットが優先なので、用意できるまでに時間がかかってしまう」という回答でした。そこで、英国中のあらゆるオンラインショップを探しまわり問い合わせを続けた結果、Analogue Seduction の eBay ストア にてブラック塗装の SME 用アームベースの在庫を確認、2つ確保できました。

The Michell company told me that they had the armboards in stock but were earmarked for for the turntables they will ship. So I tried to find any dealers that has the armboards in stock, and finally I could buy two black SME armboards at Analogue Seduction’s eBay store.

Solidair Audio Pylon / Ukishima / Trinity Upgrades

そして、GyroDec の時にも導入してその素晴らしい効果を実感していた Solidair の各種パーツ を、Orbe SE でもあらかじめ装着しておくことにしました。

Then, I thought I would buy the some Solidair Audio’s upgrade parts, that previously made me so much impressed with the results for my GyroDec.

まずは、GyroDec の代名詞でもあると同時に、数少ないウィークポイントでもある、スプリングサスペンション部分。これを SME ターンテーブルで採用されているスタイルにアップグレードするパーツです。これにより、GyroDec の再生音は別次元に進化しました。これは全 GyroDec ユーザにおすすめのアップグレードです。

The first upgrade parts are the replacement of the spring suspensions, which is one of the representative parts of GyroDec (at the same time one of the weak points). A few years ago I installed Solidair Audio Pylons onto my GyroDec, which was really great. Highly recommended for all GyroDec users.

前回は Solidair Audio Pylons を導入しましたが、今回は Orbe SE 用に、高性能版である Solidair Dark Star Pylons を選択しました。

This time, for Orbe SE, I picked up the improved version, Solidair Dark Star Pylons.

続いて、同じく GyroDec 時代に導入してやはり効果を実感していた Ukishima Gyro です。ターンテーブルの足を、マグネットフロートさせる部品に交換することで、設置場所からの振動による影響を極限まで排除できます。また、GyroDec や Orbe 専用に作られているので、ボルトオンできますし、ターンテーブル全体がフワフワすることなくリジッドに設置できるメリットもあります。GyroDec Mk.III の時とは異なり、今回の Orbe SE はスタンドアロンモータですので、モータ部分も同時に嵩上げしなければならず、そのパーツがセットになっているものを購入しました。

Next is the Ukishima Gyro, which I also installed onto my GyroDec and I found very effective. By replacing the turntable feet with magnetic floating parts, the effects of vibration can be eliminated to the utmost limit. Also, Ukishima Gyro is made exclusively for GyroDec and Orbe, it’s very easy to install, and will work flawlessly. Unlike GyroDec Mk.III, Orbe SE comes with a standalone motor, so the motor unit has to be raised as well.

さらに、アームベースとシャーシの間へのレゾナンスループ対策として、前回は Pedersens Gyro Armboard Upgrade を導入しましたが、今回は同じく Solidair Audio の The Trinity Armboard Suspension を試してみることにしました。

Furthermore, as a countermeasure against resonance loops between the armboard and the sub-chassis, I decided to try Solidair Audio’s The Trinity Armboard Suspension. Previously on my GyroDec, I chose Pedersens Gyro Armboard Upgrade for the same purpose.

これらの信頼するアップグレードパーツを用意したことで、長年使ってきて現在自分史上（笑）最高の状態にある GyroDec とほぼ同等の条件となり、純粋にターンテーブル自体の違いを確認できることになります。Solidair Audio の Miles Kilby さん、今回もありがとうございます。

With these trusted upgrade parts in place, I am pretty sure that the Orbe SE is already on par with my GyroDec, which I have been using for over twenty years, and which currently is in the best shape I have ever experienced 🙂 . So now I will be able to audition the difference purely between these two turntables themselves. Thank you so much like always, Miles Kilby-san!

Setting Up the Orbe SE

部品到着待ちだったり、作業時間がなかなかとれなかったりして、セットアップを開始できたのは結局3月中旬からとなりました。その後も、トーンアーム用ケーブルやトーンアーム固定用M3ボルトが欠品していることを思い出しては都度調達したり、と、牛歩での組み立てになりました。

Due to waiting for parts to arrive, and the difficulty in finding time to work on it, I was not able to start the setup until mid-March. Even after that, I had to procure tonearm cables and/or M3 bolts that were missing, so the assembly was done at a very slow pace.

Differences between GyroDec and Orbe

GyroDec / Gyro SE と、Orbe / Orbe SE の違いは、いくつかあります。

There are several differences known between GyroDec / Gyro SE and Orbe / Orbe SE, such as follows:

逆に言うと、これら以外の点は、Orbe は GyroDec と基本設計を共有していることになります。

In other words, Orbe and GyroDec share the same basic design, except these differences.

また、これらのうち、重量級プラッター、スクリュー締め方式クランプ、ダンピング材は、GyroDec 用に Michell 純正アップグレードパーツ として提供されています。

Also, thick platter kit, screw-down clamp and DensoDamp, among these, are officially available from Michell as upgrade parts for GyroDec users.

残るタコフィードバック付き高性能DCモータ + NC電源ユニット、およびピンポイント接触のダブルアクリルシャーシベースは、Orbe / Orbe SE 専用となっており、個別に販売してもらえません。

However, the rest of the two — tacho-feedback DC motor + NC Power Supply, and the pin-point contact double acrylic chassis — are exclusive to Orbe / Orbe SE: they cannot be sold individually, unless you own Orbe.

特に、モータと電源ユニットは、シリアル番号で厳格に管理されており、Orbe オーナ以外への提供は絶対に行ってもらえないとのことです。

In particular, the motors and the Power Supply Units are strictly administered by serial numbers, and they will never be offered to anyone other than Orbe owners.

The Audition: Comparison with GyroDec

ともあれ、Solidair Audio アップグレードパーツも揃え、基本的に同じトーンアームを装着した状態なので、我が家の GyroDec と Orbe を比較試聴する場合、上で示したようなターンテーブル自体の差を試聴することになります。果たしてどこまで音が変わるものなのか。

Anyway, my GyroDec and my Orbe SE both have the same (or very similar) Solidair Audio upgrade parts installed; also having the same tonearms installed. So I will be listening to the difference(s) between these two turntables themselves. I wonder how much the sound will differ…

Far cleaner soundstage with better transiency

レコードは、GyroDec より圧倒的に重厚なプラッターに、ネジ留め式クランプで強固に固定されます。GyroDec の視覚的チャーミングポイントであったブラスウェイトがなくなったことにより、見た目の美しさは確かに後退するかもしれませんが、一方であたかも 60mm 厚のレコードをそのまま回転させて再生しているかのような安心感があります。

With the Orbe SE, the record is firmly secured with the screw-down clamp to the very thick platter, which is significantly heavier than the GyroDec’s platter. With a set of the brass weights being absent (which surely is the visually attractive point of GyroDec), some people may say Orbe looks less attractive in terms of aesthetic beauty. On the other hand, when the record is set to the massive platter, it looks as if a 60mm-thick record is rotating and being played back, which gives a sense of security.

再生音からは、さらにシャープになった定位による空間描写の向上が予想以上に感じられます。この音の変化は、いままで GyroDec をアップグレードしまくった結果、向かってきた方向の延長線上にあるのですが、現時点の GyroDec のかなり先に行っていると感じられます。Orbe SE のサブシャーシ裏には DensoDamp が取り付けられており、サブシャーシ自体の制振も相当に効果があることを確認できます。また、モータと電源ユニットの違いによる差も、相当寄与していると推測されます。

The playback sound shows an apparent improvement of soundstage layering, highly probably due to the improved sound localization. I feel the sound improvement with Orbe SE is a straightahead extention of the evolution of my GyroDec, which had been accomplished with many upgrades. However at the same time, the Orbe SE’s sound is well ahead of my GyroDec’s current sound. DensoDamp is installed behind the sub-chassis of the Orbe SE, and I can say that it is quite effective in damping the sub-chassis itself. The difference between Orbe’s motors / power supply units and those of GyroDec also makes a considerable contribution to the resulting sound in my opinion.

アームボードとサブシャーシを接続する Solidair The Trinity も確実に良い仕事をしています。GyroDec の時には、純正（金属製）パーツを Pedersen Gyro Armboard Upgrade で置き換えたことにより、ターンテーブルプラッター → スピンドル(ベアリング) → サブシャーシ → アームボード → トーンアーム → カートリッジ (針) → レコード → ターンテーブルプラッター → … というレゾナンスループから解放され、低域から高域まで十分に破綻なく再生されるようになりましたが、今回の The Trinity も、同等の効果をもたらしてくれていることがよく聴き取れます。

I also had very positive feelings on the Solidair The Trinity Armbord Suspension. My GyroDec has been equipped with Pederson Gyro Armboard Upgrade, which replaces the original armboard parts. And it was obvious that it effectively eliminated the resonance loop (platter → spindle/bearing → sub-chassis → armboard → tonearm → cartridge/stylus → record → platter → …). This time, I could notice that The Trinity upgrade surely contributed the same improvements with the Orbe SE.

両者とも、基本的に全く同じトーンアーム（3009-R vs 3009-R Black Edition、どちらもブロンズナイフエッジに交換済）かつ全く同じカートリッジ（SPU Synergy）を使って試聴しており、そしてアームボード周りのほぼ同等の対策をしています。にもかかわらず、GyroDec に比べて Orbe SE の方が、トランジェント性能の更なる向上、および低歪感の向上が明らかに感じられるのは、とても興味深く、同時に少し不思議な気がしました。もっとも可能性が高いのは、サブシャーシの DensoDamp による制振の有無と、ピンポイントダブルシャーシ、そして分厚いプラッター、でしょうか。いや、やはりモータと電源ユニットの差が大きいのかもしれません。

It is very interesting, while at the same time a little strange, that both GyroDec and Orbe SE are equipped with virtually the same tonearms (3009-R vs 3009-R black edition: both equipped with bronze knife edges) and the same cartridges (SPU Synergy), also with the similar armboard suspension upgrades (Pedersen Gyro vs Solidair The Trinity), while the Orbe SE delivers far better sound with much improved transiency and low-distortion compared with my GyroDec. I guess it would highly probably be due to the effect of DensoDamp, pin-point double acrylic chassis, and 60mm thick platter, or most imporantly, the difference of the motor and the PSU? I am not sure.

“Hana” and “Series IV”, for the first time

もう1本のアーム、Hana SH を装着した SME Series IV は、私にとっては新しい体験でした。カートリッジも、トーンアームも、どちらも初体験です。

The sound from another tonearm, i.e. the SME Series IV tonearm with the Hana SH cartridge, was a new experience for me. This was the first time for me to use both of these components, the cartridge and the tonearm.

日本メーカ製 ながら日本市場未発売、ハイエンドの Umami Red を筆頭に海外で非常に人気の高い Hana カートリッジのラインアップ においては、私が今回入手した Hana SH はいわゆる中堅モデル（しかも、MM受けできる高出力タイプ）です。しかし、間違いなく優秀な素性を備えていると感じられる Hana SH のポテンシャルが、Series IV のみるからに固有振動対策のためのテーパードマグネシウムパイプとあいまって、ますます解像度高く、美しい空気感で、歪感も極少、トランジェント性能が高く瞬発力ある音が出現します。

The high-end Umami Red cartridge — a product of a Japanese company Excel Sound, but not sold in Japan — has been highly acclaimed. On the other hand, Hana SH which I got, among the whole Hana cartridge series, is an so-called intermediate model. Also, the SH cartridge is a high-output version (2mV output, compatible with MM phono stage). However, I thought Hana SH should have much potential, and would fit beautifully with SME Series IV’s tapered magnesium tonearm (that surely contributes reducing ringing resonances). And the result was above my expectation — higher resolution sound expression, very low distortion, high transient sound is delivered from this combination.

唯一、ほんの少しだけサウンドステージが狭めというか、音にかぶりつき気味な感覚なのが気になりましたが、これは以下の TAS レビューにも書かれている点と一致します。

The only drawback (if any) I felt was that the soundstage being a bit narrower than I expected. This impression of mine may be consistent with what was described in the following TAS review article.

私があえて高出力バージョンの SH を選択したのは、フォノイコの事情です。SuperNova II がフォノ2入力（およびライン1入力）であり、同時にゲインや負荷インピーダンスの調整は裏面のディップスイッチで行う必要があるため、常に入力1の負荷インピーダンスを 47kΩ に、入力2を約 100Ω にしています。そのため SPU や DL-103R などを入力2の方につないだままで切り替えられるように SH を選んだと言うわけなのです。SL にしておけばよかったかな。。。

I intentionally chose the Hana SH (higher-output version), because of the situation on the phono preamp: the SuperNova II has two phono inputs (and one line input). The gain and the load impedance must be adjusted with the DIP switches on the back, which is somewhat inconvenient for people like me who frequenty changes phono cartridges. Now I set the load impedance of input 1 to 47kΩ, and input 2 to about 100Ω, so that the Series IV (and Hana SH) is connected to the input 1, while the 3009-R Black Edition (and SPU or DENON) to the input 2, for the convenience. Hmmm, should I have chosen Hana SL instead of SH…?

もっとも、Hana カートリッジを使うのは今回が初めてであり、ユニバーサルシェルに装着して 3009-R で比較試聴したわけではありません。ですので、上記は主観的なふわっとした感想にすぎません。せっかく手に入れたカートリッジなので、ますますいろんな音源再生を楽しんでいこうと思います。自分は筋金入りオーディオマニアでは全然ありませんから（笑）こういう時は気楽で助かります。

However, this is the first time for me to use Hana cartridges. I have not tested the SH cartridge mounted with an universal shell for use with 3009-R. So, my impression described above is just subjective. Anyway I would like to enjoy playing various records with this cartridge and to make the most of it. Since I don’t think I am a hardcore audiophile at all 🙂 , I just keep going easy.

Soundchecking favourite records, and my impressions

今回は、長らく愛聴してきた、音のディテールもおおよそ記憶している LP の中から数枚をピックアップしてみました。

This time for the initial listening test, I picked up several LPs from my entire collection. I have enjoyed these records for many years, and I can say I remember every detail of the sound on them.

1989年リリース直後にCDを購入、1990年大阪公演に行った当日にLPを買った（笑）、Lou Reed の愛聴盤、「New York」 (Sire 1-25829, 1989) は、予想以上の音を聴かせてくれました。リリースから30年以上たった今聴いてもロック系として優れた録音の1枚だと思いますが、全ての音源の解像度がますますあがり、少し広めのライブハウスでかぶりつきで聴いているような感覚がさらに増大しています。特に A-5 “There Is No Time” の冒頭の爆音の塊が、全く破綻なく歪感もなくドカンと再生され（あくまで当社比 w）、これは大量のアップグレード適用後の GyroDec でも聴けなかった感触だ、と嬉しくなりました。

First is one of my favourite Rock albums, “New York” (Sire 1-25829, 1989) by Lou Reed. I bought the CD version in 1989 soon after it was released, and later on the day I went to his 1990 Osaka concert, I obtained the vinyl LP version. The sound rendition from the Orbe SE was easily beyond my expectations. This particular album, I believe, is one of the great-sounding Rock albums, although it was recorded and released over 30 years ago. The resolusion of all sound sources has improved, as if I was listening it live in a slightly larger music club. One of the highlights is A-5 “There Is No Time” — the explosive sound at the beggining of the track was played with a bang, no breakdown nor distortion at all. I was so much impressed with the sound presentation, that I could not have with my loving GyroDec even with many upgrades.

フランスの NØ FØRMAT! は、年間パスポート購読によるレコードサブスクで私が心から応援しているレーベルです。その名盤揃いで今も増え続ける NØ FØRMAT! 全カタログ中、特に音楽的・音質的に愛聴しているのが、、Ballaké Sissoko と Vincent Ségal による「Chamber Music」(NØ FØRMAT! NØF.14 LP, 2009) です。美しいチェロとコラの音色と、スタジオを切り取ったかのような澄み切った空気感が、ますますえもいわれぬものとなりました（あくまで当社比 w）。

NØ FØRMAT! is a French label that I have been supporting with my annual passort to record subscriptions. Among the many masterpieces of still-growing NØ FØRMAT! catalog, I especially love “Chamber Music” (NØ FØRMAT! NØF.14 LP, 2009), performed by Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Ségal. Beautiful and clear tones of cello and kora, together with the atmosphere directly from the studio, is rendered more beautifully and crisp than the sound I have had with my GyroDec.

秋吉（穐吉）敏子 さんが1976年当時久しぶりにトリオ編成で挑んだこれまた愛聴盤、「Dedications」 (Discomate DSP-5001, 1976) も、A-4 “Rio” や B-1 “Wind” などで顕著に聴かれるジミー・スミス (Jimmie Smith) さんの名人芸ドラミングにおいて、タムの震える音やハイハットの美しい余韻、バスドラから放たれる重厚な空気振動が、これまで自宅環境で聴いたことがない解像度（あくまで当社比 w しつこい）で現出しました。

The album “Dedications” (Discomate DSP-5001, 1976) by Toshiko Akiyoshi, yet another favourite of mine, is recorded in trio format, performed in a piano trio configuration which was a bit unusual for her at that time. The drummer Jimmie Smith’s virtuosic drumming is mot noticeable on such tracks as A-4 “Rio” and B-1 “Wind”, which the Orbe SE renders with extra beauty and in higher resolution — at least the first experience for me with my audio equipment — , delivering delicate timbre of snare/floor tams, reverberation of hi-hit, heavy air vibrations emitted from the bass drums, etc.

私の大好物である、生音 + ローファイなエレクトロニカを代表する極私的愛聴盤、Dosh の「Pure Trash」 (Anticon abr0043, 2004) は、笑いが止まりませんでした（笑）

Dosh‘s masterpiece album (IMHO) “Pure Trash” (Anticon abr0043, 2004) represents one of my best favourite music — a combination of raw sound with lo-fi electronica. When I listened to this album with the Orbe SE, I couldn’t stop laughing.

歴史的超絶録音盤の宝庫である Mercury Living Presence の中では飛び抜けて優れていないかもしれないし、クオリティコントロールも不安定になっていた末期からの1枚ではあるけど、個人的に演奏内容が大好きな盤、Bernard Krainis, The London Strings の「Concertos For Recorders and Strings」 (Mercury Living Presence SR-90443, 1966) も、以前 HumminGuru 超音波レコードクリーナ の時に聴いた印象から、さらに一皮も二皮も剥けたヴィヴィッドな美しい音像を聴かせてくれました。

This particular LP may not be outstanding among the entire Mercury Living Presence catalog, a historical treasure trove of superb recordings. It may also be one of the last discs from the end of the life of Living Presence series, when quality control during disc manufacturing had become unstable. However, I personally love the performances on this disc, “Concertos For Recorders and Strings” (Mercury Living Presence SR-90443, 1966) by Bernerd Krainis with The London Strings. Previously this record was cleaned using the HumminGuru Ultrasonic Record Cleaner and the improvement was great. Playing this LP with the Orbe SE gives further satisfaction: vivid and beautiful soundstage representation.

Final Words

わたしはオーディオ評論家でもなく、音楽評論家でもなく、ましてやオーディオ工学や音響工学の専門家でもありません。ただの市井のいち音楽ファンですから、ここまで書いてきたことは全て客観的・科学的にあてにならないことはご了承ください（って読んだらわかりますよね）。

I am not an audio critic. I am not a music critic either. Nor am I an audio engineering/acoustics expert. I am just an ordinary fan of various music. So you know what I have written here is not objectively / scientifically reliable at all 🙂

Now that I have obtained the Orbe SE which is already my favourite, I think I will keep challenging myself in various ways, further developing Orbe’s potential, to enjoy listening to my favourite music any longer.
