The Vee-Jay Story 1953-1993

一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago, I went to the centre of Kichijoji (where the nearest train station is located), and I dropped by a CD reseller shop where I seldom went. I found a steel basket filled with many CDs with 50% discount. So I picked up several CDs – this is one of them.

Which artist(s) comes in your mind after you hear the label name Vee-Jay ? If you are a Rock fan, The Beatles comes first, since this famous band released US first LP album on the Vee-Jay label; if you are a Jazz fan, such nice leader albums by Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly or Wayne Shorter may come in your mind.

R.I.P., James Brown, The Godfather of Soul

ついにこの時がきてしまいました。

永遠にサンタさんになってしまいました。

我が尊師、齢73にて逝去。

今年も数多くの RIP がありましたが、個人的に最もショックが大きいものとなってしまいました。

尊師の成した、余りにも偉大な音楽的革新と革命を改めて噛みしめつつ。

James Brown Live At The Boston Garden, April 5th, 1968

もう100回以上は観たでしょうか。しかし 1回たりとも「見飽きた」と思わせぬ緊張度/怒涛の勢い/完成度を前に、毎度毎度腰を抜かされ感涙にむせぶばかり。一日も早く、オフィシャルな映像リリースが行われて欲しいと心から願うばかりです。

Probably I have watched this over a hundred of times, but because of the heavy tension, energy and perfection the film contains, I still have not get bored of watching – instead, every time I watch, I cannot help shed tears of gratitude. I sincerely hope from my heart, that the official release of this video is available as soon as possible . . .

Brother, Brother, Brother / The Isley Brothers

(this article deals with my favourite Isleys album, “Brother, Brother, Brother”. English version of this article (probably) will not be available.)

私が Isley Brothers を初めて聴いたのは、15年ほど前に購入した “It’s Our Thing” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3001) でのこと。1969年当時、文句なしの全盛期を迎え黒人音楽の分野では完全に最先端を走っていた James Brown からの影響が濃厚な力強いファンクで溢れた、彼らののちの活躍を考えるとマイルストーン的なアルバムといえます。続く “The Brothers: Isley” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3002) や “Get Into Something” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3006) もグルーヴ溢れる力強いファンク系の作品として、聴き所満載です。この辺りでは今では最後の “Get Into Something” が一番好みです。 前作、前々作よりぐっとタイトで切れ味抜群なリズムセクションが曲によってセカンドラインを聴かせたり、なかなか面白い。

その後私は、最初期の “Shout”、“Twist And Shout” までさかのぼったり、セールス的に絶頂だった 3+3 時代のネチネチファンクととろけるバラードまで、ひととおり楽しむ様になりましたが、現在最も良くターンテーブルに載る機会が多いのは、過渡期とされる 1972年にリリースされた本アルバムです。

Early Pressings of Steely Dan’s “Aja” LP

名盤の多い Steely Dan の諸作の中でも、“Gaucho” と並び彼らの代表的名盤として圧倒的人気を誇る “Aja”。1977年のリリース直後から、数え切れない程の枚数が市場に出回ったに違いありません。あまりにも細かいバリエーションが多すぎて、最初期プレスを特定するのが困難だとも思われるかもしれません。

Among the series of masterpiece LPs by Steely Dan, “Aja” has been regarded as one of their best and most popular albums along with another famous “Gaucho”. Since its initial release in 1977, so many copies has been available in the market. Also, there are so many minor variations, it might be a delicate question to determine which one is the earliest pressing and variation.

The Real Thing / Houston Person

この2枚組アルバムを購入するのは実は 2組目です。昨年夏に某所で購入したのですが、1枚目の LP にヒビが入っていた (しかも seller は交換に応じてくれなかった…とほほ) ため、もう 1組買う羽目になったのでした。

This is my 2nd copy I obtained recently – I bought the 1st copy in last summer at a certain auction site, but when I received the parcel, I noticed that the disc 1 was broken during the transit (what was worse, the seller completely ignored my e-mail to ask him for return…). So I had to find and buy another copy which was actually playable.

Eddie-san’s brand new CD

Eddie Landsberg さんから，この前アメリカで録音した 新譜のラフミックス CD-R が届きました．いま聴いている最中です．

My friend Eddie Landsberg-san kindly sent me the CD-R containing pre-master mix of his brand new album, which he recorded in his homeland a while ago. I am currently listening to the new CD.

 

Tenor, Guitar 入りのオーソドックスなオルガンカルテット，という意味では，彼の 1st アルバムである “Man With A Groove” (2002) と同系統のフォーマットです (あちらは tenor ではなく alto でしたが)．

This new recording was made by orthodox organ quartet (including tenor sax and guitar). This orthodox format can be also heard on his first album “Man WIth A Groove” (2002). His first album featured alto sax instead of tenor, though.

 

ともあれ，ハチャメチャにゴキゲンでグルーヴィー，という感じではなく，全体的にはしっとりとした演奏に終始してはいます (録音，マスタリングのせいかもしれませんが)．けれども，1st アルバムより圧倒的にノリが良く，いい感じでリズムがうねっているのは，メンバー 4人の相性が良いからなんでしょう．アップテンポの曲や，ハネ気味のリズムの 8ビートの曲なんかでは，各人のソロもゴキゲンに決まっていて，有機的な絡みも十二分に楽しめます．

Anyway, the impression of the album – although the atmosphere is not too wild and groovy, the whole impression is in quiet and calm mood (it might be because of such recording and mastering). However, I can say this new album is a way cool – the quartet really ”drives” with groovy undulations of rhythms, which definitely proves the affinity of each member on the session. For example, on such tracks as up-tempo numbers and eight-beat rhythmic numbers, we can fully enjoy fruitful improvisations by the members. Also, modest but professional call-and-response shows high level of magical chemistry among the four.

 

最終版の CD で，どういう「音」になるのか，今から楽しみです．

Feb. 28, 2004: Jam Session Night at Eddie’s Lounge

Here I come again. It’s been several months since I visited Eddie-chan’s lounge located at Kitasenju last (when his lounge was a grand opening day).

To tell the truth, at that time I thought and was afraid whether he would/could have constant visitors after the grand opening day was over, but fortunately it was definitely needless worries.

北千住の Eddie ちゃんのお店に行くのはオープン初日以来ということになります．オープン当時は「これからコンスタントにお客さん入ってくれるのかしら」と若干心配していましたが，杞憂に終わった様です．

 

After the grand opening day, he had tried several attempts: placing a tiny drum set in the tiny lounge, digging jam sessions every Saturday night. I am so glad to see he has been enlarging his local, friendly and invaluable community.

その後小さめのドラムセットを設置したり，毎週土曜日には自由参加可能なジャムセッションを開いたりと，Eddie ちゃんのいろんな試みが実ってか，着実に草の根コミュニティは拡がりつつある様でほっと一安心．

Yesterday Saturday night, I went to Eddie-chan’s lounge with Hatta-san, who wished to join the jam (but couldn’t, as he couldn’t prepare an amplified pianica/melodica till yesterday night). Two altos (one also played organ, the other also on drums), one tenor, two guitars, one drums, as well as a nice lady who played duet organ performance with Eddie-san, were the members who joined to the jam led by Mr. Eddie Landsberg (who also played drums). Anyway it was again an enjoyable and comfortable night. Thanks Eddie-chan.

で，昨晩は，ジャムセッションに参加したいと言っていた 八田さん と共に訪れました．残念ながら，ピアニカの調達が間に合わず，八田さんの演奏への参加はかないませんでしたが．alto sax 2名 (うち 1名は organ も，もう 1名は drums も)，tenor sax 1名, guitar 2名, drums 1名, Eddie ちゃんと連弾で飛び入りの 1名，そして Eddie ちゃん (drums も披露) でわいわいとジャムが行われました．ともあれ，昨晩もとても楽しい夜を過ごす事ができました．エディーちゃんありがとう．


Another fortunate was that I could watch the complete version of the legendary James Brown performance at Dallas in 1968 (just after Martin Luther King was assassinated).

もう 1つ嬉しかったのは，あの1968年ダラスでの JB のライブ (Martin Luther King 暗殺直後) の完全版ビデオを観ることができたことでした 🙂

Congrats to Eddie’s Lounge Grand Opening!

2003年11月26日水曜日，北千住にお住いのハモンドオルガンプレーヤー Eddie Landsberg さん のラウンジ Eddie’s Lounge がオープン初日だったので，参加してきました．

来店されていたのは，主に Eddie さんのご近所さんや，音楽関係の知り合い，英会話/ピアノ/オルガンの生徒さんでしたが，こじんまりした店内は (初日ということもあってか) 大盛況．2日目以降も赤字が出ないことを祈ります（笑）

もともと Eddie さんが私にメールでコンタクトを取ってきて下さったのですが，とても気さくでかつディープな音楽マニアなプロのミュージシャンという不思議なキャラクターの持ち主です．もう今では東京の下町にぞっこんの御様子 (日本人の奥さんも下町の方)．

敬愛するプレーヤーは Wild Bill Davis や Earl Bostic という時点で既にレアものです．Shirley Scott さんや Big John Patton さんに師事を仰いだ経験をお持ちで，旧き良きハモンドスタイルからファンクがかったスタイルまでなんでもこなされます．事実，店内のテレビでは映画 “Wattstax” やら，垂涎モノの JB 尊師の貴重な映像やらが流れていました．

上述の通りお店は狭いので，コンボ演奏はちょっと無理ですが，Hammond B3 ソロだけで充分ノリノリな演奏をして下さいました．後半には (今回は内輪な面子が多かったせいもあって) オルガンの生徒さんと連弾であれやこれや弾かれたり．

CD は 2枚リリースされており，2001年録音の “Remembering Eddie Jefferson” (Berghem BHR-15) では Giacomo Gates さんをヴォーカリストに迎え，バックには James Spaulding さんや Ben Dixon さんの名前も見えます．

2002年録音の故 Big John Patton に捧げた “Man with a Groove” (Berghem BHR-19) では，オーソドックスな alto sax と guitar 入りカルテットで groovy なサウンドを聴かせます．どちらもスタジオ録音ということもあってか (?) やや大人しめの感触で，ライブで白熱した時の Eddie ちゃんの凄さを十二分に伝えるものではありませんが，お薦めです．

ちなみに過去のライブ演奏の音源は Eddie さんのサイト にて公開されています．

年末に sax 入り quartet のライブがあるので，今度はそちらを聴きにいこうと思います．頑張れ Eddie ちゃん!
