My Best 5 Acquisitions in 2005

The year 2005 passed so fast, and here comes the next year 2006 already. I sincerely hope you’ll have another nice year as vinyl/music collectors.

Speaking of myself, the year 2005 was not the best one as a collector, but there are several “great” acquisitions as well as finding a great music. Here is my own “best five” (plus an extra title) …

[UPCD 27.51 Front Cover]

Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 / Dizzy Gillespie – Charlie Parker

Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall (Blue Note 946 335 173-2) Live At The Five Spot – Discovery!

Probably the most famous (and highly-acclaimed) newly-discovered Jazz recordings in 2005 would be “Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall” (Blue Note 946 335 173-2), and the performance on the CD is really too marvellous for words. The artistry of this historical performance is as good as yet another live recording (out in 1993), “Live At The Five Spot – Discovery!” – and unlike Five Spot recording, the newly-discovered Carnegie Hall session has better sound quality. Furthermore, the moment November 1957 itself is important – the recording surely captures the moment just when John Coltrane’s artistry was dramatically changing (in 1957-1958).

Big Sid Catlett

Still, the huge bomb of this Gillespie-Parker Quintet recording was more massive. The recording was made on June 22, 1945 (four months after the legendary Gillespie-Parker recordings were made, including “Groovin’ High” and “Dizzy Atmosphere”) with superb members and nice sound fidelity. The performance is of course far above our expectations – Dizzy Gillespie blows star-mine high tones from his trumpet throughout all tracks; Charlie Parker arrived late, during the first tune, then he soon started his galvanizing chorus; Al Haig and Curley Russell’s support is tight and moving; young talented drummer Max Roach presents a stream of new rhythmic scene; then in the last two tracks Big Sid Catlett’s showtime, swinging and hard-driving drum solo, receiving highest applause.

This whole recording was discovered in seven acetate discs at a Record Convension (or Record Show) in the US – the story itself is really dramatic. The performance, the legendary history, and the dramatic story, all of which moves us a lot.

“I started collecting 78rpms!” Division

For me, the year 2005 was so special as “the year I started collecting 78rpms”. The existence of this superb 78rpm album would be the strongest motivation toward collecting 78rpms. This is Norman Granz’ one of his masterpieces (another masterpiece would be “The Astaire Story”). Twelve performances on six 12-inch 78rpm discs, beautiful photographs binded on the album, are all superb and masterpieces.

I can’t be a great 78rpm collector like Seya-san, but anyway I think I will continue collecting 78rpms little by little this year…

[AC-12 Front Cover]      [AC-12 Side-A]

The Lovely / Mara Carlyle
(Accidental AC-12)
Amazon.co.jp で CD を買う | Buy this CD at Amazon.com

Martin Dosh’s newest album (released in 2004) was the best album for me, among all new albums (or nearly new albums out in a few years). Actually it gave me many musical impressions and excitements. But when it comes to “the album which sits on my turntable most frequently”, I think this Mara Carlyle’s album is it. Well, this album also was released in 2004, and I bought it in 2005.

I found this album in the “Electronica” section at a certain vinyl shop – actually on some tracks Electronica-flavoured arrangements can be heard, and such music fans may love this album. But on the other hand, I believe this album should be a masterpiece Pop album regardless of any musical genres. Electric instruments are used here and there, but the total atmosphere sounds very “acoustic”. Also, the astounding transparency of Mara Carlyle’s beautiful vocal sounds like it comes far above from the sky. On the other hand, musical arrangements and schemes are rather conservative – it’s not like what the bleeding-edge new music scene should sound. Still, this album is, at lesast for myself, a great masterpiece, making me feel very happy and sound.

“My Surprise Find” Division

[40515 Side-A]      [40515 Side-B]

The World 2,000 c/w How Warm You Are / Gary Knight
(Philips [US] 40515)

To tell the truth, I was thinking to publish an entry regarding this 45rpm, as a followup to The Changing Times’ entry I wrote a while ago. However, time passed so fast and the new year came before I finished writing the entry (doh!) The detail will be published in the forthcoming entry – stay tuned. Anyway, this is an awesome Psyche-Pop killer!

“It’s My Birthday!” Division

This LP album was already introduced on this site in May 2005. This is a very special album for me, since I’d been looking for a copy for several years, and the recorded date was just when I was born (on June 8, 1970) – furthermore it was recorded in Japan (the country I was born of course!)

This album features one of my favourite form, guitar trio (guitar, bass and drums), and played by two of my favourite guitarlists (Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell) plus very unique guitar stylist Attila Zoller – these three guitarists play three tracks each, then play together on the last track. The LP consists of full of exciting moments, showing colourful diversities of the artistry of each guitarlist. Again, a masterpiece.

Extra: “What A Wonderful Hobby Vinyl Collection Is” Division

Too famous and too popular to talk about this album here 😉 Yes, one of the most famous Mercury Living Presence LP, recorded and released in 1958 (when stereo LP just started to be released) and spine-chilling great recording (talking about the performance, it’s funny to listen that the violinist muffs his phrases in some parts). This LP album should have been the best-seller among all Living Presence titles – actually so many used LPs are here and there in the used vinyl market, and I’ve heard the CD reissue of this performance sells very well. Furthermore, this LP includes the unreal sounds of bronze cannons, as well as huge bells of a church – this should be another reason of being a best-seller at the time. Later in 1978, Telarc label recorded the same composition (originally released in LP, and now can be heard on Hybrid SACD), which made the company so famous. After listening to the Mercury’s recording made in 1958, we must be aware of what the engineers of Telarc tried to reach to and go beyond.

It was sometime in spring of 2002 when I firstly obtained the copy of this album – so why is the album listed on this “my best 5 acquisitions in 2005?” It’s just because, after some trials and errors, I could finally find one of the earliest copies (matrix stamp of FR1 A1 on Side-A, FR4 A1 on Side-B) in December 2005.

The copy I obtained in 2002 had matrix of RFR-3 on both sides, which proves the early-1960s pressings at the Mercury/Philips Richmond plant. The copy was pressed rather dull, and the sound was no good. Later, I found another copy with FR8 A1 on Side-A and FR9 A4 on Side-B – pressed at the RCA Victor Indy plant. The sound dramatically changed from the RFR-3 copy! The texture, the vividness and the massive colour really sounds like what is called “spine-chilling!” It’s really enjoyable and astounding in an audiophile’s sense. However, as a vinyl collector (or a vinyl junkie), I always had a feeling of “getting and listening to the sound of much earlier pressing” – then finally I could find the earliest copy mentioned above (there could exist earlier pressing, with earlier Side-B matrix than FR4). To meet our expectations, this FR1/FR4 copy can deliver much fresh, much delicate, more spine-chilling (and less distorted) sound which is really amazing.

One more note – unlike other Living Presence LPs (most of which are very scarce and hard to find nowadays, and costs too expensive for ordinary music fans), this early pressing of SR-90054 can be obtained at very reasonable price, maybe because this album was too popular and so many copies had been pressed and sold. All we need is patience and persistency to find “the copy” – it was like “a magic moment” when I finally found and bought such a wonderful-sounding copy.

  1. shaolin

    The Jazz Scene
