Less-known 45rpm, Pt.3 – The Sugarhill Four

It’s been over four years since I firstly opened the site dedicated to Mercury records. The most delightful thing for me has been that various musicians, their relatives, producers or even engineers kindly contacted me by e-mail. They have told me so many invaluable information. I really thank for that.

あっちのサイト を公開して 4年強、一番嬉しいのは、レコードを吹き込んだ御本人やそのご家族、あるいはプロデューサ、エンジニアといった方々からメールを受け取ることです。過去にそういった方々から数多くの問い合わせを頂き、メールでお話しさせてもらい、多くの情報を提供して下さいました。本当に感謝感謝です。

Well, this is the part 3 of the “Less-known 45rpm” article (previous articles are: The Changing Times and Gary Knight 45rpms). This 45rpm, which contains pretty girly-pop tracks, was recorded by a seldom-known girl group of four, who left this 45rpm only. Of course, there is few information about this 45rpm and the group. But recently, a certain person e-mailed me about this 45rpm, and he kindly let me know the member of the band. Then luckily I could have a contact to Deborah Rubin-san (who was the member of the band), and we exchanged e-mails several times. The following interview is a result of editing such e-mails (with kind permission by Deborah-san). Now let’s enjoy the less-known 45rpm, and the very interesting story (here for the first time?) behind the record!

さて、 The Changing Times、 Gary Knight に続いて紹介する「マイナーなシングル」シリーズ第3弾の本盤ですが、この 1枚しか録音を残していない、4人組女性グループのかわいらしいガールポップです。このグループについては全くといっていい程情報がありませんでした。それが最近、ある方からのメールにより、元メンバーの Deborah Rubin さんとコンタクトをとることが出来まして、何度かメールでやりとりをしました。以下、そのメールを元に、(Deborah さんの許可をとって) インタビュー形式にまとめなおしたものです。歴史に埋もれた一枚のシングル、それにまつわる貴重な話 (本邦初公開、いや、世界初公開?) を以下お楽しみ下さい。

R.I.P., Mr. Syd Barrett

サイケやガレージが大好きないちファンとして、私にとって シド・バレット (Syd Barrett) は余りにも大きな存在でした。Syd Barrett が Pink Floyd であり、その逆も真。一体、“The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” や “The Madcap Laughs” といった奇跡的なアルバムを、彼以外の誰が作れたというのでしょう? そして可愛らしさと狂気が同居したかの様な “Arnold Lane”、“See Emily Play”、“Apples And Oranges” といったサイケポップチューンを作った職人でもありました。唯一残念なのは、彼はもう何十年も前から、(精神的に) あっちの世界に行ってしまっていたことです。

For me as a fan of Psychedelic / Garage music, Syd Barrett meant everything – Syd Barrett was Pink Floyd, and the reverse being true. Who else could make such stunning albums like “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” and “The Madcap Laughs” ? I also love his/their Psyche-Popper “Arnold Lane”, “See Emily Play” and “Apples And Oranges”. The only regret was, that he had already been (mentally) away from this world for dozens of years . . . .

私に出来ることは、ただただ「どうぞやすらかに」と祈り、彼の残した音楽的財産を聴き続けることだけです。

All we can do is to say “rest in peace”, and continue listening to his works for any longer.

The Complete Live At The Village Vanguard 1961 / Bill Evans

少し古い音楽が守備範囲の音楽ファンの間では、いまだにアナログレコードをメインに聴く方が少なくありません (私もそのひとりですが)。いわゆる「名盤」と呼ばれるアルバムは、過去に何度も LP や CD で再発されてきていますが、それでもファンは当時リリースされたオリジナル盤と呼ばれる古いレコードを血眼になって探し、時には (常人には理解不能な程の) 大枚をはたいて手に入れようとすらします。

Analog records are still main source for listening, for many of music fans who like old recordings (I am one of them of course). So-called “masterpiece albums” has been reissued so many times in various formats like LP and CD, but such people will try to find old original pressing LPs and pay so expensive money for them (ordinary people will be surprised to know how expensive the original pressings are in the vintage market).

その原動力は、「もっと良い音で聴きたい」という一点に集約されるでしょう。録音されたばかりのマスターテープを使って、当時の機材で、実際に録音をプロデュースした人やミュージシャンの意見をとりいれつつ音決めを行い、カッティングされ、プレスされた当時のレコード。再発盤LPや日本盤、リマスターCDでもかなわないことの多い、そのオリジナル盤の音の素晴らしさはしばしば「鮮度」「過渡特性」「エンジニアの音」「時代の音」といったタームを使って説明されます。確かに、サーフェスノイズやスクラッチノイズの彼方から、とほうもない音の魔力が襲ってくるかの様なレコードは枚挙にいとまがありません。その代わり、アルバムによっては、常人には理解できない程の高額で取り引きされている盤も少なくないのですが . . .

In short, the primary motivation toward original pressings would be “the thirst for better sound quality” – they were cut and pressed from very fresh master tapes, using equipments at the time of the recording, by including the preferences and concepts of producers, engineers and (sometimes even) performers. Many of such original pressings surely sounds far better than later LP reissues and remastered CD reissues. The greatness of the sound of original pressings is sometimes referred as “freshness”, “better transiency”, “the sound of the engineer”, “the sound of good old days”, etc. Actually, we can easily count so many vintage albums which sounds superb beyond surface/scratch noise – they really have fascinating power of sound. On the other hand, such albums costs too expensive, and beyond ordinary people’s common sense.

そんな中、ごく稀に、オリジナル盤LPは余り欲しくないと思える盤、のちにリリースされた CD を持っていれば (文字通り) 充分だ、と確信を持って言える盤があります。

However on the other hand, I sometimes encounter a rare example (although there are few) – an album of which I don’t necessarily want an original pressing. In such case, a certain CD reissue is (literally) enough for me for sure.

You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me / George Wettling

There are so many masterpiece performances of Mainstream Swing Jazz left on legendary Keynote label. Some might love Lester Young Quartet’s 1943 session too much; other recommendations might include Dinah Washington’s debut recording with Lionel Hampton Sextet in 1943, Coleman Hawkins’ quintet session featuring Teddy Wilson (1944), Kansas City Seven’s swingy session featuring Lester Young (1944), Cozy Cole All-Stars’ awesome recording featuring Earl Hines and Coleman Hawkins (1944), Lennie Tristano Trio’s debut recording (1947), and many more . . . We must deeply thank to the producer Mr. Harry Lim, who recorded most of these legendary recordings.

極上の中間派ジャズがこれでもかという程大量に録音された、伝説の キーノート (Keynote) レーベル。 その中でも、レスター・ヤング (Lester Young) カルテットの 1943年録音を愛して止まないファンは多いでしょうし、他にもダイナ・ワシントン (Dinah Washington) の初録音 (1943)、コールマン・ホーキンス (Coleman Hawkins) クインテット (Teddy Wilson 入り) の劇的な名演 (1944)、カンザス・シティ・セブン (Kansas City Seven) のスウィンギーなセッション (1944)、コージー・コール・オールスターズ (Cozy Cole All-Stars) 名義の、アール・ハインズ (Earl Hines)、Coleman Hawkins などを含む完璧なセッション (1944)、レニー・トリスターノ (Lennie Tristano) の初録音 (1947) など、名演を挙げればきりがありません。ただただ、これらの伝説的セッションの大半を録音し後世に残してくれたプロデューサー、ハリー・リム (Harry Lim) 氏に感謝するのみです。

BTW, for me, there was a 10-inch LP a few years ago, Side-A of which opened my eyes to the greatness and the artistry of mainstream Jazz and to Keynote label (although I already enjoyed many prewar Jazz before that). It was . . .
