Groovin’ High / “Diz” and “Bird”

( . . . きちんと音楽を聴ける時間がやっととれた . . . )

This afternoon mother-in-law went long way back to Kobe. She stayed with us for about a month to help us with the baby. Thank you so much anyway.

The only regret with her was, for me, that she didn’t like listening to music much, and that she didn’t understand how much (and how often) I love listening to music as a daily basis. So while she was staying with us at home, the loud speaker on the right side had to stay away from the speaker-stand, because the speaker is always located in front of the window to the veranda, and she always complained that the speaker stood in her way out to the veranda with laundry . . . yes she’s right.

Max Roach a la carte

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put ’em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

 

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach’s other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

Thelma Gracen on Ditto Label!

その筋 (?) のファンには有名なジャズシンガー セルマ・グレーセン (Thelma Gracen) と、泣く子も黙る偉大なロック/ポップアーティスト ポール・マッカートニー (Paul McCartney)。この二人を結ぶ意外な繋がりについてご存知でしょうか?

Thelma Gracen (a very obscure female Jazz vocalist) and Paul McCartney (needless to say the biggest icon in the Rock/Pops history) – do you happen to know the surprising link between these two artists?

The Vee-Jay Story 1953-1993

一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago I was near Kichijoji station on an errand, and dropped into a large CD chain store I seldom visit. I was lucky enough to find a basket of CDs marked 50% off, so I picked up several — this is one of them (or rather, one box).

みなさんが Vee-Jay (ヴィー・ジェイ) レーベルと聞いて思い出されるのはどんなアーティストでしょうか。ロックファンならば、The Beatles (ビートルズ) のアメリカにおける最初の LP を思い浮かべられるでしょうし、ジャズファンだったら Lee Morgan (リー・モーガン) や Wynton Kelly (ウィントン・ケリー)、Wayne Shorter (ウェイン・ショーター) のリーダー作などが思いつくかもしれません。

Which artist(s) come to mind when you hear the label name Vee-Jay? If you are a rock fan, The Beatles probably come first, since this famous band released their first US LP on the Vee-Jay label; if you are a jazz fan, fine leader albums by Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly or Wayne Shorter may come to mind.

Your choice? LP with cover, or 78rpms without cover?

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice –
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

ある人種 (笑) にとっては、究極の選択かも知れません。
同一内容、ほぼ同時期のリリースのアルバムだとして、 ジャケット付の LP をとるか、 ジャケなしの SP をとるか。

Mary Had A Little Lamb / Willie Bryant

瀬谷さんはあっという間に分かってしまいましたが (笑) 78回転 の方でかかっていたのは、 ウィリー・ブライアント (Willie Bryant) の 「Mary Had A Little Lamb」 という曲でした。この演奏、この SP、歴史的名演でもメガレア盤でもないけれども、ホント大好きなんです。

Don’t Stop The Music / George Jones

これは 先日届いた14枚 の中の 1枚ではないのですが、先月か先々月に「ついでに」入手したものでした。しかしここまで素晴らしい内容だったとは嬉しい誤算です。

This 78rpm is not one of the fourteen 78rpms I got the other day – probably I bought this a month or two ago along with several other 78rpms I won. However, the music was unexpectedly wonderful to me – it’s a lovely, welcome and fascinating misjudgement.
