Music “For Hi-Fi Bugs?” or “From Out of Space?”

The other day I received an e-mail from the person in Bellingham, WA, who asked me for some insights on the particular copy he got, that was somewhat mysterious. It was a “Music From Out Of Space” or “Music For Hi-Fi Bugs” by Pete Rugolo. He also sent me photos of that copy. It actually made me very interested and stimulating. Here’s the story.

先日、米国ワシントン州在住の方からメールを受け取りました。その方が入手したレコードについて不思議な点があるので、何か詳しい情報を知っていないか、という質問でした。そのレコードというのは ピート・ルゴロ (Pete Rugolo) の「Music From Out Of Space」あるいは「Music For Hi-Fi Bugs」で、レコードやジャケットの写真も送って下さいました。そして調べると、確かに非常に興味深い点が見つかり、詳しく調べてみたくなりました。

What the EP (Extended Playing) Originally Stands For

Google Books 上で The Billboard （米「ビルボード」誌）のバックナンバーが1942年のものからほぼ全て閲覧可能になっています。これにより、レーベル、レコード製造、アーティストの動向など、当時のレコード業界のさまざまな側面の歴史を調査するのが格段に楽になりました。これまでは、図書館のような施設で閲覧したり、目星をつけた号を古本屋やオンラインオークションで購入するしかなかったのですから、コンピュータ上でネットワーク越しに検索しながら目当ての記事を閲覧できるというのは、隔世の感があります。

Almost all back issues of The Billboard magazine (since 1942) is searchable and browsable on Google Books website. This enables us to do very convenient research through the web, on history of record labels, record production, artists and many other topics on record industries in the past. Previously we had to go to libaries to look for specific back issues, or we had to look for and buy them at second hand bookstores or at online auctions.

今回は、マイクログルーヴレコード黎明期の「コロンビア対RCAヴィクター」 「33 1/3 対 45」回転数競争あたりからはじめて、諸説入り乱れて解釈が分かれている「EP」というタームについて、過去の資料を探ってみましょう。Wikipedia 日本語版 では 33 1/3回転7インチ盤である、と書かれている EP盤ですが、それは 誤り で、あくまで45回転7インチ盤の一種である、ということがお分かり頂けるかと思います。

This time I am looking up some back issues, to what the term “EP” originally stood for – the term sometimes has been misunderstood (and there has been various opinions on it). So let’s get started with the old 1948 article on the “Speed Battle” – 33 1/3 v.s. 45, Columbia v.s. RCA Victor.

A Few Facts About EmArcy Label, Pt.2

気がつくと 前回の前編 から5年以上もあいてしまいました。すんません。その後も幾人かの方に「続編をお願い」「本題を早く」とリクエストを受け続け（笑）、年明けから暇を見つけてこつこつ書きため、新たに調べ物を行い、今回やっと本題の中編を書き終わりました。

It’s already been over five years since I posted the first part of the EmArcy article (sorry still available in Japanese only) – sorry for that. Several people have contacted and asked me when would the next part available – this month I managed to have spare time to write it – part 2 of the EmArcy article – including further research on various things. And now it’s finally available public.


エマーシー (EmArcy) レーベルのシングル（16000番台）、10インチLP（26000番台）、12インチLP（36000番台）の オリジナル盤判定基準 について、長々と書いてみました。リリース開始時期の特定 や、新たに判明した プレス工場 の話なども書いています。とりあえず日本語版だけの公開です。こちら からどうぞ。

This part 2 (in Japanese only yet) features the release period of EmArcy titles, as well as checkpoints for identifying original issues of EmArcy 16000 (45/78 rpm), 26000 (10inch LP) and 36000 (12inch LP) series.


次回の後編では、EmArcy と関わりの深い傍系レーベル、ウィング (Wing) の話と、第1次 EmArcy 終焉の1959年以降のお話を書く予定です。

The following part 3 (last part) that I am going to start writing in the near future, will feature stories around the Wing subsidiary label, and the EmArcy brand after it became less active in 1959.

Granz’ Jazz to Shift To Clef Label Aug. 1

ずっと前から、調べよう調べようと思って忘れていたのですが、先日、別の調べ物をしているときに発見しました。1948年頃から Mercury とディストリビュート契約をしていたノーマン・グランツ音源が、グランツ本人の Clef レーベルに切り替わった時期。過去に調査した際に、1953年であることまでは特定できていたのですが、より詳しい切り替わり時期を調べようと思っていたのです。

The other day I happend to find the very article that identifies the period when Norman Granz stopped distribution contract with Mercury label and started his own Clef label – I found this while I was looking for info on other research topics… I knew it was in 1953 after my past research, but I wanted to identify more precise period of when the Mercury-Clef transition was conducted.

Boogie 4 Stu: A Tribute To Ian Stewart / Ben Waters

個人的には、ストーンズ全メンバーが勢揃いしたこと自体は、あまり注目点ではなかったりします。ベン・ウォーターズ (Ben Waters) が、イアン・スチュアート (Ian Stewart) ゆかりのブギウギ、R&B の名曲をどう料理してくれるのか、その点がはるかに興味をひかれ、ボーナストラック入りで限定リリースされた 2枚組LP を購入しました。

In my humble opinion, the most interesting part of this album is NOT the fact that all members of The Rolling Stones plays on this album, but how the leader Ben Waters interprets good old Boogie Woogie / R&B tunes connected to the late Ian Stewart… I bought the limited 2LP edition of the album (with bonus tracks).

78rpms Pick-ups: Oct. 31, 2009

土曜日、奇跡的に自宅で一人の時間が少し生じたので、ハカイダーの心配をすることなく (笑) SP 盤を久し振りに聴くことが出来ました。きもちえがったー。

Saturday – I could have a precious time to be alone at home – without ‘the destroyer’ – my two-years-old daughter – so I could enjoy listening to several 78rpm records this afternoon. It was just fun indeed!

R.I.P. Wilma Cozart Fine

マーキュリーレーベル黄金期、夫のボブ・ファイン氏と共に、数え切れない程の歴史的名録音に携わった伝説的エンジニア・プロデューサ、ウィルマ・コザート・ファイン さんが、2009年9月21日に82歳で永眠されたそうです。

A legendary recording engineer and a producer, Ms. Wilma Cozart Fine (who, together with her husband Mr. Bob Fine, did numerous recording sessions on Mercury label most of which later became true classics) passed away at age 82 on September 21, 2009.

今は昔、ラジオやテレビと共に、リスナーに音楽を届ける重要なメディアとして塩化ヴィニール製のレコード (33 1/3回転の LP レコードと 45回転のシングルレコード) が活躍していた時代。その頃、レコードの製作・製造いうのは、非常にデリケートで細密な技術を要する 高度な職人技 に支えられていました。

Back in the old days when vinyl records (33 1/3rpm LP records and 45rpm single records) played one of the most popular media to deliver various kinds of music to audience (radio and television broadcasts would be vinyl’s counterparts), making vinyl records was like a result of delicate and detailed craftmanship which needed high degree of difficulties.
